Steve Thornburgh has been named the athletic director of the new Citrus Valley High School, set to open in Redlands for the 2009-2010 school year, said Redlands East Valley athletic director Rhonda Fouch.

The announcement was made at last night's Redlands Unified School Board meeting.

Citrus Valley will become Redlands' third high school.

Thornburgh is a REV teacher and assistant girls basketball coach. He has also coached at Redlands and Fontana high schools, as well as the University of Redlands.

"He's an awesome guy," Fouch said. "He'll bring a lot of coaching experience, which will be good for mentoring younger coaches."

Citrus Valley, nicknamed the Blackhawks, begins with ninth and 10th graders in the fall. The new school, currently being built along Highway 30, will play an independent sports schedule.
