Gilberto Gil

I had a brief chat with Gilberto Gil on Wednesday. Gil's term on the City Council will end next week when newcomer Jerry Bean is sworn into office.

We only talked for a minute or so but Gil said he plans to visible around Redlands come 2008. He's maintained a pretty low profile since his loss in the Nov. 6 election and we'll see what happens next.

Incidentally, Councilman Pete Aguilar, who won election to his first full term in November, let me know that I wasn't completely correct when I blogged that "the city" removed Gil's portrait from the wall at City Hall. Aguilar said Gil took the photo down on his own.

Andrew, I appreciate your operating this blog. However, I may be the only one who reads it.

I want to compliment you on choosing to write about the Beazer and Standard Pacific real estate developments in Redlands. I wish you'd go further. I'm puzzled by the fact that the rest of the IE looks to be squeezed by RE overcapacity, falling values, stagnant incomes, rising costs, marginal infrastructure, illiquid lending capacity, etc. yet City Hall (eg. Shaw and Gilbreath) seems unconcerned.

I would guess that Redlands is not immune. Local real estate sales have plummeted and prices are falling. Many of the home sales during the last couple of years were financed with adjustable, low equity loans. Foreclosure notices are posted in the newspaper every day. Several new developments have been halted. Tilt-up buildings are being finished with no apparent tenants.

Worse the City is counting on retail sales growth at the very time that Highland is pushing ahead with a 1 million square foot Destination Mall on the 38 @ 5th Street and Yucaipa is doing the same on the 10 @ Live Oak Canyon Road.

Meanwhile there's a push for parolee housing, a Justice Center, a new City Hall, an Historical Museum, and higher Safety Employee salaries.

I don't get, do you?
