Journalism 101

People see this blog, read reports delivered in a style slightly askew from the one used in the daily newspaper, and may come to the wrong conclusion ...

No, this is not Opinionated.

This reporter, as in the newspaper, is taking an objective stance in analyzing the people and issues of interest to the Sun's readership.

A careful dissection of past posts will reveal a hint of irreverance, sprinkles of humor, and maybe even a whisp of irony, but absolutely NO opinion.

In fact, there was one time, the first in a journalistic career, when the reporter took a stand on an issue: On the question of whether the background of a public official should be open to the public - for the purposes of making an informed decision at the ballot box - we baldly stated that the public should have relevant info about candidates.

Hardly a breach of ethics - the implication of this entire practice, of our democratic society, is that public officials should not be able to keep secret their public work.

So there it is. Plenty of differences between this fresh brand of Web-based journalism and the less lively stuff you read in the paper, but opinion ain't one of 'em.

If you want opinion, or to see what it looks like, check out Joseph Turner's stuff on his Red County blog. He does his thing, and feigns no pretense about where he stands: An interested observer with axes to grind and ideology to burn.

It's not necessarily bad, but it's not what we do here.

Fidelity only to truth; loyalty only to you, the reader. Opinion isn't part of the equation.

You have to be kidding me, Your statement would be the same as Jim Morris, the City Manager, the Police Department Chief stating that their statements are not skewed toward the interest of their boss, the Mayor. HA!
Just look at the editorials with the pro- Morris slanted views. I do believe you are allowed to report objectively. the only reason I continue to subscribe is for the comedy of those skewed opinions and of the un- informed statements of those who write in favor of the Morris camp. I do not blame you personally, you have to support your family, but SHAME on your paper for its' biased views that do not help the good citizens who pay taxes and continue to get short shafted by the Mayor Morris folly

Wow, the bloggers who intentionall write two pages of mindless dribble to eat up the blog space intended for other bloggers fall right into the category of the Morris camp mindset. As the Mayor so often does at the council meetings, he just skips anyone who has a logical thought for someone who follows his path. Hopefully, these professional septic sewer blog stoppers will only be around for another month.

Dribble. Drivel. What’s in a word, right?
I don’t even mind when you copy and paste my words to pepper your posts with, like “rubber stamp” ad naseum and “hyperbole”. It adds another layer of levity to the already entertaining posts you all so dedicatedly manage to crank out without coming in the same neighborhood as a real issue time & time again.
Just keep writing! The Ortiz camp is a boon to those understanding Marianne Milligan is who we need in San Bernardino’s 6th floor city attorney’s office.
After all, even Jim Penman handpicked and groomed her to replace him when he overconfidently estimated his anticipated success in his failed bid for mayor. That was one time I will concede the official you present as an infallible candidate didn’t make a mistake ~ unless you count the logistical error of having her ready to hit the ground running, with the training already accomplished. That’s just one more of many reasons thinking people will vote for Marianne Milligan for San Bernardino city attorney this November 6th.

I'm curious as to what Ms. Atanasova does for a living that she has the time to write so many lengthy posts? I think I'd like to have a job like that. I have a full time job, children to raise, a degree to finish and a home to manage. I would never dream of spending so much time sitting in front of a computer.

Many people are not old enough to remember the old guard City Council members who were found to be corrupt and sent packing by our City Attorney Jim Penman. Some may not know of or remember the charges that they were hit with at the end of the
Investigations Those who attempt to place Jim Penman’s opponent in the same league that he is in, clearly are delusional and prone to dribble, yes, dribble is the correct word for these types. If anyone would try to imagine his opponent ever trying to investigate any Council member for corruption, much less charging them, they would be sorely disappointed in this newbie and her same gender consortium of bloggers. Can you imagine this opponent going to Morris and trying to state any type of investigation findings? Morris would send them to the Green Zone of the 20 blocks of Op Phoney in exile for the rest of his tenure.

City Attorney James Penman, stood up in front of city councial meeting on monday Oct1,2007, and said that over weekend killings it was done by Parolees and when was the city going to do something about parolees doing all the crime in the city.
Again The city attorney is making the city beleive that parolees did these crimes when again The City Attorney use parolees to to blame for crimes that they had nothing to do with.
Again The City Attorney James F.Penman, has showed the Hate he has against Parolees and it a hate crime to single out one gruop and blame them for ever crime in the city.
By state and federal law The City Attorney James F. Penman, has broken the laws of hate crime and there no justice in having him arrested for breaking the laws.
So where is Justice Now for a City Offical who break the law? Why can he be arrested? Is he above the law?

Curious Observer, and any other curious readers,
In the hope of setting a trend here whereby questions posed are actually responded to, I reply that what I do with my time is outlined in great detail, including specifics, in another area of SBNow Blog. It posted there some time ago and is readily available for your perusal. The supposition that I take up long blocks of time to construct my post flies in the face of my daunting daily public, medical, academic and family schedules.
Today concluded with a visit to the computer before sleeping. 7:00AM laps around the track were our first outdoor activity today, as usual. We were at Metrolink. I was present for my college course. I provided a library visit for the wee one to return over 10 books she borrowed for her Alaskan Finger Mask clay project last week. I enjoyed a visit with the wee one’s teacher as she placed in the 100th percentile NATIONWIDE in Math, so may be bumped up a year ahead, as she has been for 4 years in all English-related subjects. I serviced our community in an official capacity for some hours. We enjoyed a pre-theater dinner out. I campaigned for two candidates. We enjoyed front seats at Sturgess Theater with the family and several friends for Ray Bradbury’s talk. We accomplished our daily marketing as we are a raw vegan family and buy organic produce daily. I washed & dried a few laundry loads (while doing other things). Among those, reading this month’s book. I participated in many civic visits, discussions and phone calls, and more. There is nothing special about me, or my life. I simply budget my time wisely and make the most of my life’s time. You see, in between all this, I also stabbed myself 4 times, to check my diabetes; took diabetes medications; hooked myself up to the 4 litre per minute oxygen I have been prescribed for over a year now; and attended other personal tasks since being diagnosed with Serous Papillary Ovarian Cancer in 2000. I have a zest for life and try to accomplish all I can with each day blessing me to be here, in the warm and loving embrace of my family, friends and community.
Not being sure if it is previously mentioned at SBNow Blog, let me demystify here: I have a long history of writing. I was Women’s Section editor of a countywide 30,000 copy 28-paged weekly from 1985-1991. During the terms of San Bernardino Mayor Holcomb, and subsequent Mayor Minor I served as reporter, writer, editor, photographer and distributor of the city-funded “Around Town” 4-paged 4,500 copy monthly; for several years I wrote for Californian, a statewide monthly 30-paged publication of 100,000 copies; I have many similar accomplishments to my credit.
The implication that I am a “peck & paw”, or, “one finger” typist is more an indication of the caliber of typist making the inquiry than an aspersion toward me. While an exaggeration, frequently it is said that my fingertips fly over the keyboard. Having been a typist since the days pre-dating interchangeable IBM Selectric “typeface balls” ~ my typing days began when I had to walk over to a separate machine to type larger characters, (But really, I don’t think I’m THAT old, yet.).
I encourage everyone to engage in the political discourse possible in this new San Bernardino Sun venue, regardless of literary, or typing, abilities. This is not intended to be an opportunity to scrutinize our writing skills – or lack thereof – but more an opportunity to share and debate the political scene in San Bernardino.

Joe Ortiz,
As a member of the committee registered in Sacramento as We, The People of San Bernardino, Recall The San Bernardino Four, I assure you I remember those times very well. By the way, where were you and what were you and your family doing to help us in any way when we were working almost around the clock to recall the not one, two or three, but four city council members simultaneously?
I also remember it was NOT Jim Penman that found them to be anything, or that sent them packing anywhere. He is simply a city attorney with powers limited to those of his job description, the same as any other municipal attorney. It is unfortunate that you have yet to realize you are duped into believing blatant falsehoods ~ Jim Penman deserves no credit for the events that took place in the 1990s. Minor and Estrada were visitors to our campaign headquarters, but Penman never even stopped by to wish us well in our efforts.

Anthony,

It is common knowledge that 10% of the criminals commit 90% of the crime.
It is also common knowledge that a parolee risks a return to prison for violating parole.
Recidivism is an issue, but parolees are not the be-all end-all of our society’s woes.
It is a very tiny mind that tries to cover a complex issue with a one-word blanket, like Penman trying to cover the issue of crime with the word parolees.
I am sure you would agree that, were the problem that simple, society would have abolished parole long ago. Or, society would have instituted life sentences without the possibility of parole for all crimes committed. It hasn’t happened because that isn’t the answer to the very complex problem of crime.
San Bernardino deserves better than a simpleton, spouting outrageous lies to incite the population in a calculated effort to get them riled up and in reactionary emotion-over-logic mode prior to their first opportunity to have him dethroned. Yes, dethroned. He goes around like The Little Emperor and that’s just not right. Nothing about Jim Penman is right anymore.
Your Friend & Neighbor,
Susana Atanasova

I'm sorry, Ms. Atanasova, that didn't answer my question. Though the details of how you spend your days are incredibly fascinating,my inquiry was about your means of support. Do you have a job or do you live on some sort of assistance? Or since you say you have extensive writing experience, is that how you support yourself and your daughters? Are you published? (I'm very interested in reading some of your work.) I noticed you are listed as the sole owner of your home (public information), so one could assume you are not married. You make no mention of a husband in your profile on the San Bernardino Raw Food meetup group. (You only mention your daughters in your posts and rsvp's.) However, your Myspace page says you are married. Are you lucky enough not to have to work because your husband has a very good job?

Curious Observer,
You appear to be under the false impression that I am a candidate, again offering myself up for probing into even the most mundane and miniscule aspects of my private life by those prone to set aside self and family toward that end, such as yourself.
I am not a candidate for any office this time around. When I was, SUN and 100% of ALL other media endorsed my candidacy. I was the sole candidate to claim endorsements from 100% of the media. Trust me, or ask Robert Rogers, an investigative reporter could show you a thing or three, counted in dozens! Still, I came up endorsement-worthy, time & time again.
As an aside: I find it odd you diverted attention from your stated obligations to a family, job, home and academic venture to perform an armchair "investigation" of me, a private person not seeking any public office this year. That you felt compelled to do so is quite telling. It may comfort you to know I went through the real deal when I was a candidate and, as stated above and also a matter of public record, I was found to merit endorsements from ALL the media ~ a distinction I am both proud to remind you of and hope helps you resume your far more important stated obligations.
Since my candidacy, and among numerous other credits to my citizenship and public stewardship, I have added passage of an extensive six-month background check with an included modern laser generated fingerprint scan to my life’s experiences and have long now been proud to serve our community as an UNPAID employee of the San Bernardino County Probation Department as Hearing Officer, Social Interviewer and Mentor to our youth ~ I’ve done that, among many other things to better the greater good for many years now.
That said, let’s get to the purpose of SBNow Blog: Who are the candidates you feel hold the best potential for bettering San Bernardino, if elected?
Your Friend & Neighbor ~ Quite Content In Not Knowing Anything More About You Than You Care To Write Here,
Susana Atanasova ~ Oh ~ and just to be crystal clear:
1. Neither my immediate nor my extended family is seeking financial, or any other, assistance from any public or private person or entity.
2. You are free to read all my writings available to you, as are all literate people ~ I am here for intellectual, not commercial motives.
3. Just as Tiger’s wife doesn’t cross the green for him, Kobe’s wife doesn’t hit the hoops for him, Tabitha doesn’t write novels for Stephen (King), and Sally has never donned the gown and banged the gavel for Pat (Morris), I do not impose upon another serendipitously associated with me to endure the public spotlight and inappropriate prodding from the obtuse ~ especially in a non-election year ~ for me. Fortunately, in return I am not asked to shoot hoops, tinker with engines, figure out finances, or any number of things that cause my eyes to glaze over! I recognize that we are VERY blessed/fortunate and hope that you and yours may say the same.
