Official: Morris backs Milligan
The only questions approaching Thursday night's Marianne Milligan fundraiser were: How strongly would Morris condemn City Attorney James F. Penman and will the mayor also announce support for James Mulvihill, 7th ward council candidate ...
The answers were: About as strongly as possible and no. More than one source has told the Sun that an endorsement is imminently forthcoming for Mulvihill, a professor emeritus at Cal State San Bernardino who is challenging Wendy McCammack.
One question moving forward will be to what degree Morris supports Milligan's campaign. Based on her endorsements list, Morris has probably played a major role in touting her qualifications. Virtually everyone on Milligans diverse list was also a Morris supporter.
Clearly, dislodging Penman is Morris' top priority this November. Whether that makes Penman vulnerable remains to be seen. The candidate financial statements due later this month should be quite revealing.
Below are excerpts of Morris' press release in support of Milligan. Note the strong denunciations, the attack on Penman's entire career, while never actually mentioning the "city attorney" by name. Strong stuff:
* For too long the city attorney's office has been playing politics instead of problem solving. I hoped that sad reality would change when I was elected mayor 18 months ago. Unfortunately, it has not.
* As he has done for years, the current city attorney consistently uses his position as a bully pulpit from which to push his own political agenda, create factions among city leadership, attack political opponents, and foster a culture of fear inside and outside city hall.

This is the sad truth we have been witnessing and yearning to be free of for far too long:
Excerpts of Mayor Pat Morris' press release in support of Marianne Milligan for City Attorney:
* For too long the city attorney's office has been playing politics instead of problem solving. I hoped that sad reality would change when I was elected mayor 18 months ago. Unfortunately, it has not.

I keep the letter from Mayor Morris open on my desk, gaining a renewed sense of hope that our gray skies are about to clear up each time my gaze falls on it.
Shana Clark's comment about our mayor is precise and bolstered by these quotes. We are living in a time bursting with potential! What we make of it depends on how invested we are willing to become in the election process.
