Rikke Van Johnson says he wants 9-11 tapes
Contacted Tuesday afternoon, 6th ward Councilman Rikke Van Johnson reiterated that he wants to hear 9-11 tapes of what happened between police and residents in his ward on Aug. 19.
"I need to do this just from what I've heard talking to the residents," Johnson said ...
"The residents in that area feel like they're caught in the middle."
Just after 5 p.m. Monday, Johnson issued a press release into an Aug. 19 altercation between police and residents in a low-income neighborhood on the West side, where mourners were holding a streetside vigil for a man gunned down one day prior.
Johnson said he wants to review the tapes himself, even though Chief Mike Billdt said at the Aug. 20 council meeting that the department will fully investigate the matter.
Johnson said he had members of his staff ask Chief BIlldt or Assistant Chief Frank Mankin days two to four days ago to give the councilman the 9-11 tapes.
"They said they're looking into it," Johnson said. "They haven't said yes or no."
When this reporter asked Johnson why he wanted the tapes when Billdt had already told the council he would conduct an investigation into the incident, Johnson said: "I'm not saying the chief is not investigating the matter fully. I have full confidence in that, however, I have questions in my mind that have to be saitisfied in regards to this situation."
In his Monday release, Johnson said one 16-year-old boy was arrested and "many" were injured when police broke up the gathering at the Dorjil housing projects.
