Wanted Alive: Candidates flouting the law

| | Comments (17) |

Rumors always swirl in election season in SB, but this year is going to be a bit different ...

Now we have this blog, which we're going to use in a little accountability experiment.

Assignment: If you see suspicious signage touting a local candidate for city attorney, city clerk, city treasurer or any of the four council seats facing election Nov. 6, post it here. We want to know about it. Where it is, who it is.

Whip out a cell phone and/or digital camera and snap the evidence if you can ... send it to robert.rogers@sbsun.com, and I'll post it along with your comments.

Inevitably, there will be false alarms. But we know candidates have bent the rules in prior years to get their names etched in the brains of passersby and drivers.

Dozens, nay hundreds, perhaps thousands, of eyes will watch these ambitious politicians like hawks, exposing sign posting indiscretions every chance we get.

Basically, signs can't be posted in or on publicly owned property. Posted signs need permission from the owner of land and/or property on which it is posted.

Some of your reports will probably wind up in the paper. Some could lead to candidates having to explain themselves. We'll see.

This reporter will keep his eyes peeled as well.

We are officially on sign watch. Hope to get some tips and pics.

Depending on how it works, this could be some heady stuff. A real opportunity for citizen journalism to integrate with traditional "professional" media to get fuller coverage.

This technology - cell phones, blogs, digital cameras - holds tremendous promise for just that type of blended, expanded news gathering and news delivery techniques.

The playing field is open, and we're all on it. Now it's just a matter of figuring how we synchronize our efforts. This reporter thinks the blogosphere is exactly where we should be exploring - and forging - this future.

Here is a pic I got from reader. It's not a candidate sign, but something the reader found egregious on the West side.

What about the fact that Morris used city computers and a temporary employee (paid by the city) to compile his list of campaign supporters onto a MS outlook file that is housed on city servers? That's a lot more interesting than campaign signs!

Finally, someone trying to keep politicians honest, even if it is on this small level. I worked on the campaign of an also ran during the last mayoral election and I was very disheartened by the irreverence that the two 800 pound gorillas showed towards the well traveled intersections in the city. Those promising to "clean up" the city get their job by first trashing it. I have since moved out of town, but I am still looking out for good old San Bernardino, my birthplace and the birthplace of my children. Hopefully, this will be a successful experiment.

P.S. Ask Jim Penman why Dave McCammack was putting Penman signs up on the fence of the old christmas tree lot across from Walmart during the last mayor's race even after I was nice enough to pull over in the dark of night and remind him of election laws forbidding it. So is Penman the goose and everyone else gets to be the gander. Penman sure is a peace of work, isn't he.

Thanks Rojo. You're hard to keep up with ...

SB watcher said:

Wow, Nobody Special is making some very serious allegations and it sounds like insider information. It is illegal for any staff time , facilities, or equipment be used for campaign purposes. Since Penman fancies himself the "watchdog" of the city this would appear it only is watching everyone else. I think the Sun should look into this issue since it is much more serious than a candidate statement.

Susana Atanasova said:

I would hope people writing and reading "facts" would understand that hearsay isn't fact, but, first-hand, "I saw a Jim Penman supporter out breaking the law and pulled over to remind him of the illegality of his actions" would be admissable in a court of law as first-hand testimony.
Nobody Special wrote nothing special by not including any specifics. For example:
WHO was this typist?
WHAT is the file's name?
WHERE is the proof this happened?
WHEN did this happen?
HOW did you learn of this?
WHY are you choosing to write loosely and under an alias?

Nobody Special said:

"Oh, Susuana, oh don't you cry for me...." The FACTS have already been shared with Mr. Penman and the FPPC. I'm sure it will come out soon....and this anonymous person will remain anonymous.

Susana Atanasova said:

Anonymous "Nobody Special",
I respect your decision to exercise your option to remain anonymous and hope my question about why you chose to write loosely and under an alias wasn't assumed to be more that what it was: A question seeking an answer - (Still waiting for the answer, if you are comfortable sharing your reason/s for making serious allegations under the cover of anonymity).
That said, I am eager to see what, if anything, is revealed regarding this topic from both Mr. Penman and FPPC.
Oftentimes, we are told nothing may be said while an investigation is in progress, so that is understandable and a certain period of silence is even expected. Still, no word either way from official FPPC sources in a reasonable period of time will lead me, for one, to believe this was an invented non-issue.
My primary reason for that statement is the complete lack of commentary about this by Mr. Penman thus far. If anything, he is an excellent opportunist. I find myself incredulous that Mr. Penman would remain closed mouthed about this, were it to be even remotely possibly true.
Still, being an eternal optimist, I keep the benefit of doubt and will wait to see what comes of this, if anything.
~Susana - truly curious about your reason/s for remaining anonymous

SB watcher said:

Susana, obviously you do not live in the real world. Those who are sometimes in a position of "knowing" have a special interest in being unknown, namely their jobs. Penman would fire anyone he suspected of leaking information. In the name of self-preservation writers remain anonymous. So please, don't feel so special because you list your name at the bottom of the post.

Susana Atanasova said:

SB Watcher,
Whoa! Did I touch on a tender point? It was not intentional.
As I reiterated, to be perfectly clear in that post, I am "truly curious about [Nobody Special's] reason/s for anonymity”.
Please, my clearly stated curiosity and desire to know firsthand are what I’ve repeatedly said they are – and nothing more.
I’m assuming you threw in the Penman would fire someone line as an example and nothing more since this thread concerns Mayor Morris’ office, not Penman’s. If anything, I would imagine anyone in Penman’s office providing him this information would receive some positive strokes from him for this.
Still, until it’s shown to be more than just another baseless grouping of unfounded words on a blog, posted for reasons only the writer knows for sure, I’m remaining in wait-and-see mode on this one.
I am aware of many reasons people write under pseudonyms and agree that fear of retaliation, including unlawful termination, can be one of them.
I was, and remain, more interested in hearing directly from “Nobody Special” than in concocting posts listing the many reasons that may be the one that applies in this instance.
A simple, “I do it so my boss won’t fire me”, or, “I do it so my spouse won’t learn of how vehemently in opposition I am to the stance taken by my formerly better half this election season”, or, ;;; like I said, the potential reasons are many…
I don’t want to know what all the possible meals are for dinner – I want to know what’s in the kitchen ready to go, tonight! Do you get me now?
As for feeling “special” because I sign my name: Lordy, no! I know I’m sticking my neck out, but I’ve made the personal decision that, to me, my posts have more validity this way. People know me “in the real world” – no intended reference to your opening remark – and can place that real-life person with the signature of the posts here. I know that for those who know me, seeing that I’ve signed a post will lend it credence ~ I’m no bamboozler, that’s for sure, and the folks that know me, know that. And FYI, I’m frequently told “in real life” my self-esteem is nowhere near elevated enough, but I am cool as-is in that regard. My life’s not about getting glory – my life’s about getting results! So far, so very good!
Maybe some will be forthcoming here, one day, too.
Time will tell.

Dear SBNow Blog,
Today is Monday, October 01, 2007.

A SBNow blogger posting anonymously for reasons as yet unshared, on 9.26.07 made grave but unsubstantiated allegations toward the San Bernardino Office of Mayor and purported activities taking place therein.
There is no indication as to when this activity was to have taken place.
Five days have passed since the post here and not a word has been published elsewhere about this.
These things take time.
I'll pop in to see if there are any developments and note any news available on this on about a 5-day routine.

Surely the opposition to Marianne Milligan for City Attorney isn't so desperate that lies are being fabricated out of whole cloth, or are they?
Time will surely tell on this one.
Tick-tock, tick-tock.

I encourage you to join my reality with the others who are, indeed involved. Problems are solved here, not dramatized; issues are addressed, not skirted in favor of gibberish-filled nonsensical sentences; people think, learn and continue to grow their whole lives-long… Overall, it is a lovely and satisfying alternative to sharp-tongued, dim-witted defensive anonymous posturing with a complete lack of content and substantiation by the kind of folk that probably tried taking from the offering plate instead of contributing the first time they had the chance, since “nobody was watching” ~ a predicator of the types of secretive, destructive and manipulative big bullies they would grow to become.
My reality is like America, people from all over yearn to be a part of it, but deem the journey too arduous with only the best & bravest daring to venture forth from where they complacently stagnate. Moreover, like those arriving to America, few have any desire to return from whence they came.
The weather’s fine, life is good, the good fight is fought ~ and often enough time’s won ~ there’s room for diversity and room for YOU!
Or, was this another instance of you writing with one alias and replying to yourself with another?
Remember, someone’s always watching – always keeping tabs. The Internet isn’t even as private as a public telephone call.
Keep telling yourself nobody’s watching, and keep being wrong.
The sunny side of the street will always be here, waiting, if you ever decide to cross on over!

Susana, get a life. Weren't you removed from the Human Relations Commission because of your antics, histrionics (sp?), and inappropriate behavior? Let's keep to the facts if in fact we are trying to truly inform the voters without emotions.

Susana Atanasova said:

If I were to spew blatant ugly lies and innuendo as you dedicate your life’s time to here, perhaps, like you, I would cowardly hide behind an alias, too. As it is, I speak the truth and back it up with links to independent corroboration ~ and sign it with my name for all the world to see.
The following is shared for the benefit of all SBNow Blog readers. It is a matter of public record, entered into the audio record through a complete reading by Chair, submitted to every commissioner present and surely reflected in the minutes of the most recent San Bernardino Human Relations Commission meeting, prior to Labor Day. Access to this is FREE and readily available to anyone seeking to make sure this is 100% accurate, which I openly sign my name to ~ not some alias.
Immediately following my necessary resignation ~ for the reasons stated in the following letter ~ I was, yet again, commended by San Bernardino and have the gilded commendation in my possession, along with my various appointments and other awards from the city and county, among others. What have you got to YOUR credit in this life? Enough with stalking me already! If anyone needs to get a life it is YOU, as evidenced by your deplorable actions completely refuted by me with the facts of record copied here:
To: Honorable San Bernardino City Councilman Dennis J. Baxter
Re: My Resignation From San Bernardino Human Relations Commission,
Effective Friday, August 31, 2007
Date: Thursday, August 30, 2007
CC: San Bernardino Human Relations Commission

Dear Dennis,

Thank you for the honor of my appointment to San Bernardino Human Relations Commission at the 2006 Inaugural Gala.
Serving the commission as Chair of Public Relations Committee has led to formation of the SBCUSD-wide “October Is Human Relations Month” bookmark contest, launching at this evening’s meeting of the commission. The city-wide logo design contest is poised for launch and will also be successful. Commission Vice-Chair Dr. Eri Yasuhara is in possession of all materials necessary for the completion of these events.
As you are aware, this week I both accepted a new Advisory Board position of some immediate importance in our community and I was honored to accept a request that I provide service to our community at a much higher level. My first official appointment takes place on Labor Day and I would prefer to have the weekend to fully prepare. Therefore, due to the demands of my newest civic service I tenure my resignation from the San Bernardino Human Relations Commission effective as of the close of business this Friday, August 31, 2007.
My civic service on San Bernardino Human Relations Commission this past year-and-a-half has been an exciting and educational opportunity to provide benefit to our community in an area I have exceptional knowledge and success in and I thank you for providing me the venue for serving. However passionate I am about elevating the level of Human Relations Commission, I feel compelled to more efficiently invest my time, energies and talents toward these newest positions where excellence is the hallmark already attained in every area, thereby affording me a more productive service experience.
I remain available to mentor my replacement on the commission and have some suggestions in that regard.
Sincerely, [and I signed my full name – not an alias]
As an aside, I have acquired grant funding for 150 15 gallon trees being planted by wonderful volunteer teams across San Bernardino City in 5 contiguous city median blocks of Mt. View, 4 city parks and 3 city libraries the 27th of this month and have MANY other contributions of TREMENDOUS benefit to San Bernardino occupying my time, too.
For verification of that TRUTH, please see: http://www.sbcounty.gov/bosd5/pdf/20070910_bosd5_yard_beautification.pdf

If you call tears and admitting that you've been asked to step down (as recorded on the tape) then SURE you resigned.

Susana Atanasova said:

LMBO,
What an unexpected example of San Bernardino's ugly underbelly to wake up to ~ and Good Morning, San Bernardino ~ only 1 month until the elections!

Yes, my voice broke and I shed a tear when overwhelmed with the spontaneous outpouring of support and acceptance that enveloped me from my fellow commissioners also audible on the audio recordings. It was an intensely beautiful bittersweet moment in my life ~ my first-ever resignation from anything at 47 years of age. I was heading off to experience my exciting new appointment as an Argosy University Advisory Board member, (where, as it happened, friends I had worked with throughout the region over the years again surrounded me), among the other additions to my schedule alluded to in my letter; on the other hand, I was leaving the commission better than I found it, as witnessed by my following accomplishments:

My creation of the SBCUSD “October Is Human Relations Month” bookmark contest I chaired and left ready for launch, (see letter).

My creation of a citywide film series I single-handedly prepared being ready for funding

My citywide Art logo design contest, well on the way to fruition and left in the capable hands of Honorable Commissioner Dean Dr. Eri Yasuhara, of CSUSB College of Fine Arts & Letters, who served on my committee with Honorable Commissioner Maxine Barnett.

My innumerable public appearances at countless venues throughout Riverside & San Bernardino Counties where, as Chair of the San Bernardino Human Relations Commission’s Public Relations Committee, I populated tables, meetings, booths and many other events while introducing the public to Human Relations, distributing SBHRC informational tri-folds and answering questions.

Not to mention a long-sought improvement to the commission desired by many and finally enjoyed, by happenstance, the very evening I gave notice of my impending resignation, left as my legacy to the commissioners who yet remain a part of my life, and in frequent communication with me. Decorum prevents me from being more specific as, unlike you, I do not seek the intentional humiliation of others for sport. I will not humiliate the person we both are aware of here nor elsewhere. Mean-spiritedness is neither productive nor becoming. You would do well to embrace that reality.

It is sadly ironic that you invest your few words toward attempting to belittle my HUMANITY and renown as Human Relations Commissioner.
For the record, it was with heavy heart that I did what Chair read into the record that evening, and everyone may see posted above, in exact copy of what every other San Bernardino Human Relations Commissioner received hard copy of that evening: I resigned for the reasons stated, in typewritten English. The voice reading is clearly male. I am female and suppose myself to not have a male-sounding voice.

Reassignment to Human Relations Commission service to my community, after 4 years of service as Police Commissioner, and my continuing service to our community as Fine Arts Commissioner, where I was simultaneously serving while on Human Relations Commission, and where we allocated almost $140,000.00 in grant monies last month, was a wonderful opportunity for me. Not a stagnant, static being, I continue to learn, grow, and accept invitations to serve in ever more productive arenas.

My suggestion to you is this: Rather than trying to feel better about yourself by attempting to tear down another, try bettering yourself. We all have room for improvement, me included. Then, you will reap the benefits of your life’s time more productively invested than when anonymously posting crotchety snippets to a political discourse blog.

Truly, you must see the pathetic appearance you project by acting thusly. I’m sure your parents raised you to do better than this.

Next time, maybe, instead of LMBO (Laughing My Butt Off ~ the alias you chose for that post), you will LBMO (Like Betterment More than Obtuseness). I believe in your inherent ability to better yourself. You can do it, if you try.

Supporter of Local Community & Personal Betterment,
Susana Atanasova ~ Known to shed a tear, from time to time.
