Chas Kelley responds to tightening scrutiny

So much for running a campaign free from the stain of his prior partnership with anti-illegal immigration firebrand Joseph Turner .... The coals under 5th Ward Councilman Chas Kelley's feet are getting hot ...

The brief background on this is that Kelley is up for re-election, and he wants to avoid the controversy he courted as an activist alongside Turner last year.

So Kelley endorses Clark and disavows Turner, a fast turnaround when, as reported by SBNOW yesterday, he was gathering signatures for Turner's initiative.

Not only that, as reported by RedCounty blogger - and city clerk candidate and new Kelley bette noire - Joseph Turner, Kelley was saying some rather shocking things to news media.

San Francisco Chronicle, June 2006: "If you can't rent apartments here, you can't put your kids in our schools, and that leaves more time for the kids who speak English."

Speaking to anti-immigrant champion Lou Dobbs in May 2006: I'm going to vote for this (Turner's) initiative to be implemented. And if that fails, I will vote to send it to the voters."

These revelations are important because they draw a clear ideological connection between Turner and Kelley, a fact that Kelley would rather not be apparent while he's battling three challengers to hold his seat next month. It also casts doubts on the Kelley's motives for throwing support behind Clark instead of his longtime friend and political partner Turner.

Kelley responded to this reporter via email Friday morning.

" I supported the previous Ballot Initiative to crack down on illegal immigration in San Bernardino. I believe illegal immigration is a serious problem which needs to be addressed by all levels of our government. If government fails to act, then I support the public's right to vote for our own solutions."

"With regards to the election for City Clerk, I am endorsing, supporting and voting for incumbent Rachel Clark. I believe that her challenger lacks the temperament and experience to hold this office."

And clearly Chas, you lack courage.

Kelley responded via email, because those are the writings of his consultant.

I would love for Mr. Rogers to get Kelley on the horn and ask him why he supposedly left the SBVRA ballot blank, when he could have voted to take no action or voted to oppose my endorsement.

Instead, I received the unanimous support in a vote in which he cast a ballot.

It is unfortunate that Kelley wants to cite "experience" and "temperament" in his reasoning for endorsing incumbent Rachel Clark.

Telling in light of the fact that Chas Kelley, not even two years into a City Council term sought to run for Mayor. Telling in light of the fact that he only has a GED.

And I supported Kelley in his bid for mayor and walked for him when nobody in his own family would walk for him because I believed he brought fresh, new ideas to San Bernardino.

Rachel Clark has experience. One year of neglect and mismanagement multiplied by 17.

If you think that having thousands of unlicensed rental properties and the subsequent loss of millions of dollars in revenue is a job well done, vote for Rachel Clark.

If you think that allowing one third of San Bernardino's sexual predators to live in unlicensed rental properties is ideal, please vote for Rachel Clark.

If you think that absentee landlords shouldn't be treated like any other business and should be allowed to operate unfettered, please vote for Rachel Clark.

If you think that a City Clerk should do nothing upon hearing that a major retailer like Wal-Mart is not collecting sales tax revenue, please vote for Rachel Clark.

If you are happy with the fact that nobody at city hall can tell us whether or not these businesses on Highland Avenue are even paying sales tax to the City of San Bernardino, instead of Highland, please vote for Rachel Clark.

That is her experience. And I am downright stunned that not one city councilmember has called for investigation into this matter.

That is her experience. That is her record.

Joe's lack of temperament shows in his over-the-top response. City Clerk demands a calm, fair person of sound judgment: the antithesis of Joe Turner!
The incumbent has proven her competence, judgment and integrity over 17 years. She plays fair and doesn't take sides; just the kind of City Clerk we need. Joe shows poor judgment by picking her office to further his fledgling political career, and he again shows poor judgment by attacking her.

I need to set the record straight that at the last council meeting, I did in fact, discuss how to properly collect and audit sales tax and specifically held the city manager to task on this issue. The item was continued so that finance, city manager and city clerk could sit down with me and answer my questions with some real specifics of how this could have happened, how to stop it from happening again and how we go about collecting what rightfully belongs to the taxpayer. More to follow.

What I want to know about Mr. Kelly is why he is supporting a dubious project like the Verdemont Heights-Hopkins project, that will eliminate Al Guhin Park and the Blast Soccer Field. What could he be thinking. I am aware that Mr. Kelly has paid his wife $3,000 in campaign funds this past year for being his campaign treasurer. Pretty niffty deal: Take money from special interest and then put the dough in your bank account. Doing so may not be illegal, but it sure doesn't smell too good.

Wendy:

I apologize for not being aware of this update on the matter.

I applaud you for taking a stand on behalf of the taxpayers of this city and it is my sincere hope that your efforts will bring about some clarification on this most troubling oversight.

Thank you.

SB Teacher:

Where have I attacked Rachel Clark?

I have attacked her record. Last time I checked, political campaigns were designed to show differentiation between candidates and their platforms.

Where have I attacked Rachel Clark?

Dear Wendy,
Thank you for all you’ve done for San Bernardino during your years of selfless devotion toward upholding the office you were elected to fill. Thank you for your stated efforts toward this whole morass, too.

To save you some time, and help you prepare for the meeting, (BOE themselves flatly state this is very convoluted and difficult to follow), knowing you have a lot on your plate right now and so do not need to go around reinventing wheels, please, seek Publication #28 at:

http://www.boe.ca.gov/cgi-bin/pubs.cgi

or more directly, visit:

http://www.boe.ca.gov/pdf/pub28.pdf

and take particular note of page 14, then follow where encouraged, namely, page 29, continuing to page 30. After that, you will find illuminating text on page 59.

Again, thank you for all you have invested toward bettering San Bernardino. You were most certainly the very best candidate for the position, and your re-election confirmed that.

I look forward to reading your promised “more” relative to this whole quagmire and am certain you will continue to expend impressive amounts of energy while in office.

I wish you the best of success in settling this matter so that The City can move on to what may await.

Your Friend & Neighbor,
Susana Atanasova

In this PC climate, why is it so difficult for so many to realize that illegal means just that. We lose millions of taxpayer dollars and the argument continues to get a pass by the PC crowds who use their guilt to defend the illegals. Joe Turner tells it like it is.
He is looked at as the villain for attempting to take back control of how our hard earned money is put to use.

Joe Ortiz,
I don't see Joe Turner being vilified here ~ I know I'm not vilifying him here, or elsewhere.
What I repeatedly state here and elsewhere is that we ALL have a purpose in this life, a reason for being here. Joe, you, me, none of us are different in that regard.
MOST people speaking out agree: City Clerk is NOT the best fit for Joe Turner.
There may be something bigger and better waiting for Joe, after the elections. Who knows? God never closes a door without leaving open a window, does he?
I have confidence in the people of San Bernardino that actually VOTE to do one thing:
RE-ELECT RACHEL CLARK CITY CLERK
