Mulvihill: Didn't know Morris endorsed me, but thanks
SBNOW last night broke the news that Mayor Pat Morris has added 7th Ward challenger Jim Mulvihill to his endorsement list.
Turns out Mulvihill, pictured below, was the last to know ....
The endorsement came via a written statement Tuesday in which Morris rebutted City Attorney Jim Penman for questioning the ethics of the mayor's daughter having a contract to work for the city - without the knowledge of any other elected leaders.
Morris blamed the fray on Penman and 7th Ward incumbent Wendy McCammack, both of whom he described as "politicians" seeking re-election.
"Both of these politicians are up for re-election and I have endorsed their opponents," Morris wrote, the first ever public pronouncement of endorsement for Mulvihill.
"That's the first time I've heard it, but I'm pleased," Mulvihill said one day later, when this reporter informed him of the mayor's statement.
Mulvihill added that he has never asked the mayor for an endorsement, and the mayor has never told him he would give it.
He said he saw Morris on Sunday while both were ostensibly campaigning, he for himself and Morris for Milligan.
"Given the alternative," Mulvihill said, speaking of Morris combatant Wendy McCammack, "I assumed he would either not endorse or endorse me."
Mayoral chief of staff Jim Morris was opaque on the endorsement Wednesday, as he was Tuesday. He said support and endorsement are terms he uses synonymously, and that the mayor has supported Mulvihill - before Tuesday.
"It's pretty much the same thing," Morris said, adding that the mayor may have contributed already to Mulvihill's campaign.
That would be news to Mulvihill too.
"The mayor has not given any contributions to me, nor has he campaigned for me that I know of," Mulvihill said. "But I'm not unhappy about that."
Mulvihill says his campaign is picking up steam. He lost to McCammack in a close race in 1999, and he hopes for a different result this time.
He said during his walks through the 7th Ward, he is getting a very positive response from most residents.
"I'm struck by the number of people who say they've already voted for me," he said.
Mulvihill, a moderate Republican whose politics are well to the left of council conservatives McCammack, Chas Kelley and Neil Derry, added that former 2nd Ward Councilwoman Susan Lien Longville has been walking the ward for him too.
Comments
Jim Mulvihill is by far the most expert and professional candidate for 7th Ward, SB City Council.
There is no doubt that Mayor Morris has made a good decision by endorsing him.
I must say, it has been surprising for me to hear all the negative comments about Wendy as I go about my daily life. Who knew? My first instinct has been to ask that Wendy not be disparaged. In return, I am deluged with examples of why Wendy does not merit another term in office. I guess my positive recollections of her on a personal level have tainted my perspective. (Like anyone, Wendy can be a lovely person, and I am fortunate that our initial years were of a personal and very positively natured relationship.). In truth, I did cast a blind eye toward Ward 7 and am now being called to task, to accept the reality that Wendy fiercely contested many items before the council that are felt to be of benefit to the community.
That Wendy is encouraging Sanborn’s candidacy to split the votes otherwise intended for Mulvihill is an unfortunate reality. It is always ugly to witness the voters manipulated like this ~ as they are similarly being manipulated in 6th ward this year.
Voters need to understand that, in this particular election, ballots cast for Sanborn are votes “thrown away”. Remember this; Sanborn will not get the win. But votes to Sanborn serve Wendy’s purpose of keeping votes away from serious political threat Jim Mulvihill, whom lost to Wendy by a small margin ~ and may only have that happen again if the voters allow themselves to be duped into casting a vote here and there toward Sanborn instead of Mulvihill.
In 7th Ward, all votes cast should be toward candidate Jim Mulvihill. I am encouraged by his report of a high preponderance of voters announcing they have cast their ballot for Mulvihill in 7th Ward.
When all the votes are tallied, after Election Day passes, the total of the votes attributed to Sanborn, when added to those of Mulvihill, in the event of a disaster at the polls, will reveal the truth of what is written here. I’m no oracle, but I know elections. The test of time will serve this commentary well.
Jim Mulvihill is, by far, the only candidate deserving of an opportunity to represent the best interests of San Bernardino's future. 7th Ward will only achieve the dismissal of Wendy by disregarding Sanborn at the polls and voting for Mulvihill. That’s a fact, in the colloquial sense of the word.
Please, do your part to help San Bernardino by voting for Jim Mulvihill for 7th Ward City Council, if he appears on your ballot.

Jim is a good man.
In my limited interaction with him, he has always struck me as a genuinely sincere individual without a mean bone in his body.
Be that as it may, I have significant philosophical differences.
It should be an exciting election night.

Joseph Turner,
You could not have said it better. Not that there is anything "extremely" wrong with the way Jim Penman has operated as city attorney for the city the last 20 years, the fact is that with all of the sweeps and shutting down of unlicensed group homes, whatever the issue, the reality is that things are still the same.
And at the same time, there is nothing "extremely" wrong or illegal with the issues that Penman accuses Milligan.
Why? Because maybe, just maybe, the same people have been trying to do the same things over and over, and over again. What's is that saying, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results?
I, too, believe that we need a change in our election officials, let's bring in some new blood, new ideas, some new creativity into local government.
I believe this election is going to be exciting also.
It is a great day in San Bernardino.

I hope people pay attention to the way the elections work when there are more than 2 candidates.
It's going to make or break our city's future in 6th & 7th wards.
In Chas's ward, I'm not impressed with Carolyn Tillman heading out that way ~ she left us in Ward 2 when she and Danny divorced recently... What's Carolyn's knowledge and experience for the ward like, when compared to that of Chas?
I see that one as more of a convoluted mess than a real intentional split of the votes.
What is your opinion?
To not detract from the focus here being on CSUSB Certified Urban Planner Jim Mulvihill ~ he does seem to be a genuinely good man ~ with a phenomenal brain to offer our city some expert representation, as opposed to on the job training...
I truly hope the large numbers of voters telling Jim Mulvihill they have already voted absentee for him will be matched by large numbers of voters showing up at the polls to vote for him on 11/06!
Your Friend & Neighbor,
Susana ~ Holding the door open for Penman to pass and Marianne to COME ON IN!

I wish all those students who studied under Mr. Mulivhill would comment in this blog about his sexual harrassment to students who would be asked, "What are you willing to do to get that extra credit? (with a wink in his eye and a hand on her shoulder). Creepy.

Student's Mother,
Mother to mother, I know exactly where you are coming from. I have a teenage daughter preparing to graduate college this June and the radar's finely tuned to anything untoward over here, too, as it should be.
I just have to share with you that I'm probably at least a quarter of a century older than your daughter and weighed almost 100 pounds more than I do now when Mr. Mulvihill first laid a hand upon my shoulder and I saw that twinkle in his eye.
It's the same twinkle seen in the televised candidate's forum.
It's the same twinkle seen in his photo in SBNow Blog somewhere around here.
He's one of those people that have those kind of eyes.
I find it odd, considering his relatively dry demeanor, compared to what we're used to seeing on the council.
He seems to have rather moist eyes. It's just the way God saw fit to make him.
The laying of the hand, way up on the shoulder, away from a tushie, or bossom, or thigh, or... well, in one of the safer spots of all the other options available for "copping a feel", as seems to be implied, seems to me to be just his way of connecting ~ a way of demonstrating full attention. I see it to be akin to the way some gals/people I know (mostly gals do this one), that lay a hand on my forearm, or, if I am driving, on my thigh, to emphasize a point, or demonstrate that they are fully engaged in the conversation.
Honestly, (and this is from a recent SACA trained person, with a recently SACA trained 18 year-old daughter), I don't get the "perv vibe" off Jim Mulvihill, and I have had occasion to be in close proximity with him for years now ~ and have had the laying of the hand on the shoulder ~
Truly, it's just a combination of wet eyes and a neutrally positioned hand to physically demonstrate the full communication connection being engaged for a moment, or so.
The answer to his query about extra credit could be a paper, a poster, or, any other non-seductive idea from a wide array of options.
Thankfully Mom, Jim Mulvihill is NOT one of the ones we need to fret over in this regard.
Remember, this comes from a SACA trained mother-daughter team ~ we are keenly attuned to the vibe you mention.
No worries on this score,
