Information the public can't have
Just listened to a message from Lt. Scott Paterson left last night.
It seems that my public information request for the year on which Sgt. Bradley Lawrence began earning a taxpayer funded paycheck has been denied.
Paterson bolstered the denial by noting the others involved. The City Attorney's office, he said, advised him that the information was by law not subject to the Freedom of Information Act. Paterson also said he'd forwarded the information to the City Manager's office, which would give me the official denial.
I don't need to cite an obscure statute or make a legal argument to tell you we are entering very trecherous ground here. When the public can't even know who works for it and when they started working, accountability is all but gone.
Now the PD assures us they are conducting a thorough internal investigation into Lawrence. But when these same leaders decline to provide any information whatsoever, the credibility of that investigation process is sorely tested.

Have we heard from the FBI yet. Maybe, They can make some accountability happen! What are these guys so afraid of?Do they all really have that many secrets. Are they so afraid that the tactics there Narcotics officers use will come to light as ILLEGAL! There Narcotics team are as dirty as they come, and the top brass are either profiting or simply just don't care.
I think its GRAND JURY TIME.
Robert, You are my hero. You are going were no man has gone before. Thank You for your courage and YOUR complete dedication to Public service.
For the last almost two years I have read this online paper and for the most part it have been very informative. Except in terms of your reporting.. as all you seem to do is find something wrong with the police department? You complain they get paid too much, as if there position in the community means nothing. You complain that officers should live in the cities they work at .. with no regards for the safety of these officers. And those have just been the last few complaints you've decided to blog about.
When this whole "ice" incident occured you have jumped on this storyline like it was proven fact, since day one. It seems to me that it's your goal to not only proclaim this officer as a "dirty" cop but every other cop in this department. Which makes it that much harder for "good" officers to go out in the community and do their job. A job you indicated you have no desire to hold, but have no problem discrediting to the general public.
Personally, I am glad that the SBPD has shut the door on giving you any information.. and for you to spout about taxpayer money is funny as you act like you are one of the taxpayers paying those officers. If I remember correctly, you don't even live in the city, I believe you said you live in Fontana.
I don't believe that any officer is above the law, and if that officer is guilty then he should be punished by the Judicial System, not some journalist who to me seems like he has a personal vendetta against the SBPD.
Dear "Outside looking in,"
I think you should identify yourself. I think readers would be enlightened to know where you are coming from.
Robert Rogers
One more note on this:
It is true that the vast majority of officers in our department are hardworking and honest.
Sgt. Bradley Lawrence is accused of serious misconduct. Chief Michael Billdt and his command staff have not been open about him or the investigation, hence they resist even divulging when the guy was hired.
I'm not out to get anyone. I'm only out to get the truth. The vast majority of readers understand that.
Robert Rogers
Dear Mr. Rogers,
Freedom of speech, um.. I would have thought I would be entitled to write what I want and leave it Anonymous as the first poster did. Or could it be, that because I wasn't spouting what a great reporter you are that you have decided that I need to put my name to my comments.
Just so you know I don't work for the Police Dept, I have no connections to any city dept.. and I don't even live in the city as my name had indicated in the last comment. But I do have business that brings me into the city and that is the reason why I read the paper. In case your wanting to know that information too.
Mary,
You are. Thanks for reading and writing.
I do say that I have one disagreement with you. You say you are "glad" the police department looks to withold public information, like Lawrence's start date.
No one who loves this country and its principles of liberty, free speech and open government should have such a wish.
Thank you again,
Robert Rogers
hey you guys are still in here bickering while i am still lost!
How funny you would indicate that I am entitled to write what I want anonymously. Yet you have requested that I post my name...
Now, In regard to your disagreement with my statement about the PD withholding infomation, and then for you to make the assumption that I have no love for my country and principles it was built on.
How dare you, you don't know me for you to make that statement. And let it be known, if you go back and read what I wrote I stated I was glad YOU weren't given that information.
Thanks for allowing me to comment,
Mary
Everyone is always allowed to comment.
I don't make any assumptions about you. What I'm saying is you can't love freedom, liberty and democracy while wanting government to withold information from the public.
Now, if your argument is that I should be discrimminated against and not allowed information, that is even worse.
Having government pick and choose who can have information is nearly as bad as providing no info at all.
Either way, you should reassess your thoughts on free speech and open government. You are probably very smart, but you sound very silly.
Thank you,
Robert Rogers
Hey Robert, I ve been employed with the city for almost 20 years and still love my job but when all you do is write about what is wrong with our department it sure makes it hard as hell to go out there and do our jobs. Not everyone in our organization is perfect just like at The Sun Telegram. What about all of us officers who still go out and give 110% everyday to try and make this city a better place. I cant tell you how many times I've been called derogatory names, been shot at, been involved in fights and my family has been disrespected but I still do my job when it would be easier to do nothing to help the citizens of this city. So please dont judge us all until you have met each and everyone of us personally. When was the last time you wrote anything good about the officers in our department. I dont remember you writing about the officer who was struck by a car as he chased robbery suspects across the freeway and suffered career threatening injuries. JUST MY TWO CENTS
San Bernardino's finest,
Thanks for your Two Cents. I appreciate it.
I know your job is difficult and important, and that not everyone is perfect in any organization.
I will state for the record again that it is my feeling that the vast majority of SBPD officers are wonderful and hardworking public servants.
In fact, I have friendly relationships with many San Bernardino Police officers, and these are very honest, justice-seeking people who appreciate the truth, whether it's good or bad.
Also, I've written plenty of articles about the good at SBPD, like the officers who play with kids twice a month at the Sports University, the officers who delivered Christmas presents to a poor family last year, etc.
But in this case, an officer is accused of serious misconduct. People need to know this. This should not be hidden. If he is guilty, they should know that. If he is innocent, they should know that too.
It's my job to tell readers the truth, and I will continue to do so.
Robert Rogers
It seems like the posters want to kill the messenger.
I want to thank Robert for providing the info he is.
This is very important information. Not often does "The life of a Narcotics Officer" get to be debated. This "War on drugs", which is really a WAR on People, Americans at that, is such a slippery slope when it comes to the constitution.Where Murder investigations, or burglary investigations, ect...are clear-cut crimes against another person. Most times with Narcotics, it is a victimless crime. The user(there choice) goes to jail. Its like Abortion...Its a choice.
The other Tactic used by Narcotics officers is the USE of Other people (informants). How many informants working for these officers have died? The Narcotics problem, just became a Murder problem. Many studies have proven that a Narcotics officer CANT do there job unless they are USING the public.I know for a fact in San Bernardino, The Narcotics officers Make a deal , Give me 3, than your free. They do this threw intimidation and bogus charges. THEY are Potentially getting people KILLED.The work that Narcotics officer also do is undercover, or in secret. Its pretty much fair to say, they are using drugs themselves, making money off of the drugs, ect., living "The Life of a street addict" or Drug Dealer. If they want to be successful in there arrests, they better be a good actor. So, having said that....how easy is it for them to become corrupted?, pretty easy I would say.How many Narcotics officers have been found to be "Running the drugs themselves? Many.....a few movies to check out is
"The departed", "Salton Sea", American Drug war, the last white hope.
A great website to check out is http://leap.cc
Narcotics officers usually "SET PEOPLE UP" for a bust. So, you have to ask yourself...if they weren't SET-UP , would there be a crime? Or, is it Manufactured Crime.
The other thing I have been researching, since I watched "The Drug War, the last white hope, is that the police, border patrol, military all ALLOW the drugs to come to America, why, because we have the most money and since it is illegal, the profits are huge. If Drugs were legalized, the profits would be taken away, but, like in the movie...American drug war, The CIA put Cocaine on the streets of South Central Los Angeles, to pay for the Iran/Contra War. The money made went to the contras for weapons. So, you have to ask yourself...Why is METH allowed to be such a problem in San Bernardino?Who is really making the money. Are there Houses of informants, allowed to produce this?
I know this is deep and for most they would never believe Our police would do this...my friends...go watch some movies. This drug war is killing America, destroying families, blighting our neighborhoods, killings on the streets, Gangs, Crime...IT ALL STEMS FROM THE WAR ON DRUGS....Thank You Mr Nixon and Mr Reagan. If anything in the last 200 years have removed our rights and shredded our constitution...its this and Men Like Officer Lawrence and his TEAM.The WAR on TERROR is hammering the nail in the coffin of the constitution.
Nameless and faceless enemies...drugs and terror. You still think YOUR Government cares about you or your family. With 2.2 million in jail, the most of any country in the world and 1,240,692 sitting in jail at this moment for drugs...tell me its not an economy. Has America sold her soul for this economy...
If we don't have the constitution, we have nothing. And it might be you who they are coming for next.
Think about it....
You go Robert....
