Sgt. Mike Desrochers responds to Lt. Scott Paterson

The below letter was written by Sgt. Mike Desrochers Thursday in response to quotes I posted from Lt. Scott Paterson.

Desrochers is the officer who filed the original complaint against Sgt. Bradley Lawrence for allegedly illegally detaining people in the streets. Desrochers has also testified under oath that Lawrence conducted improper searches and seizures.

Lawrence contradicted Desrochers, also under oath.

I read the comments by Lt Scott Paterson regarding Chief Billdt and felt compelled to respond.

My name is Sergeant Mike Desrochers and I have been with the San Bernardino Police Department for the past 25 years.

I too want to defend an honorable, courageous and loyal man named Sergeant Steve Lowes.

Steve and I went to the academy together in 1984 and since that time he has been a dedicated servant to the citizens of this city.

He is a great friend and loyal employee who believes in upholding the law and treating people fairly.

It is no wonder Lt Paterson didnt elaborate on why Sergeant Lowes was placed on administrative leave since no one has told Steve.

The fight Steve and I have had with this administration and Chief Billdt for the past 2 1/2 will be handled in court and I am confident we will prevail.

I am responding today because I took exception with Lt. Paterson' quote that said, "All these guys who are throwing stones in the dark are cowards".

I am not sure exactly who Paterson is referring to but I am confident that quote is direction in the direction of Steve and I. Just so there is no question who I am referring to I will make it very clear.

Those who stand by and allow anyone to make personal attacks on a dedicated loyal employee like Steve Lowes are clearly the COWARDS.

I hope that is bold enough for everyone to see. Those people know who they are. Steve Lowes is being attacked for no reason other than because he filed a grievance. Enough is enough. I have been contacted by senior management and even council members who tell me "it will be better in 8 months when this chief is gone".

These leaders know that this attack on Steve is clearly retaliation however they sit in dark corners and refuse to do the right. The public deserves better and so do the officers of this department. Lt. Paterson was quoted saying, "He wont tolerate any kind of unlawful action" as he spoke of Chief Billdt.

Make it very clear that Steve and I will make sure to hold anyone accountable for unlawful actions no matter what chair they sit in at this organization. Lt. Paterson, you do not know all the facts of our case but you do know Steve Lowes and shame on you for not standing up.

These personal attacks are also attacks on the families of these dedicated officers and they need to stop. Lt Paterson said, as he spoke about Chief Billdt that " business is business and friendship is friendship and he doesn't mix the two". Scott you're not fooling anyone but yourself.

The question one might ask is, how long has Sgt. Brad Lawrence's Lt and Captain had their heads in the sand. How can this type of conduct go unchecked for so long without police management knowing about, or did they make a decision to hide their heads in the sand so they would not have to acknowledge that a police sergeant they both selected and recruited for this highly sensative assignment was capable of that type of behavior. I think one might want to investigate further up the chain of command and try to determine how long they have known about this type of conduct and why they allowed it to continue.

Lt. Scott Patterson I applaud your loyalty but question your motives. With all the negative headlines over the past two years about SBPD, the EEO complaints, federal and state lawsuits, and outside investigations against Chief Michael Billdt, it appears that Mike Billdt is a slow growing cancer that is destroying what used to be an orgnization known for it's professionalism and high standards.

The bottom line here is this. Its easy to write unsupported headlines (john) in the paper and Mr. Desrochers, I did not see anything by Lt Paterson talking about Mr. Lowes...Just that the he believed that the chief would get to the bottom of things. Ultimately the courts will decide and then we will know. As for throwing stiones in the dark, I think he was refering to cowards that stab people in the back and dont step forward with a name. you have stepped forward so, so you are not in the dark, or a coward, just foolish

Hey Mike. If you are so confident that the issues will be taken care of in court, then why are you using the paper to plead your case? handle it in court. The crow you have to eat may choke you

Mike - there's a time and place for everything. This was neither the time or place for those comments. Paterson said nothing about Lowes yesterday. He made a positve and long over due statement about the Chief. I figure you must really have something to hide. You're trying your hardest to discredit every other person in the dept when you need to concentrate on digging yourself out of the huge latrine you've put yourself in.

desrochers isn't in a hole, he's just confident and speaking out like a lot of us because the chief's days are numbered.

Mike Desrochers has the "onions" to put his name to his posts and is attacked by some "anonymous" members from the peanut gallery.

I wonder if these "stones" from the "dark" are cowardly in the eyes of Lt. Scott Paterson?

To "I can't believe what I am reading":

Please see my latest post over at Red County San Bernardino.

If you care to comment about Chief Billdt's lack of qualifications and propensity to lie...er...or if you prefer misspeak to the City Council, I would love to hear it.

In my last life, I was a manager in business. I made the change to law enforcement, to avoid the "politics" and back-biting that I saw everyday as the players jockeyed for position to greater advancement AND because I saw in Mike Desrochers a fire that I had never before observed in anyone, with regard to their choice of career.

I wanted to experience some of that.

Because I am not privy to all the information gathered in the multitude of internal investigations over the past 2 1/2 years, I cannot comment on that.

I can, however, comment on some of the people subject to those investigations, who I have known and worked with for over 14 years.

I have said to many peers over the years that I have never seen anyone so motivated and perfectly matched for a career. Mike speaks, breathes and lives for law enforcement and he has been my hero, longer than he knows.

Sgt. Steve Lowes, who I met through Mike and have known longer than anyone at this department (with the exception of Mike) is a highly decorated officer who has also devoted his professional life to protecting this community and has displayed no fear while doing so.

Steve also entered the station daily, anxious to get to work and do "the job" to the best of his ability.

The decorations speak for themselves.

Both have integrity, neither are egotistical. Both tried to address a problem that they observed and since that time, we have read about the result, almost daily.

Over the past 2+ years, they have each been subjected to a constant barrage of various "investigations", and have weathered the storm by leaning on each other and counting on each other.

If they had the opportunity to change things, would they do it again? Most of us might back off, but not them.

Mike and Steve are not about "throwing it all away." They have persevered through a quarter century with many of you and now risk their professional reputations in their pursuit of doing "the right thing".

How's that for intestinal fortitude?

Both their records and their years of nearly flawless service, deserve some respect.

They still manage to approach their careers with the same fire that has always been there, although I havent a clue how they do it.

As for more recent events, Mike has not made a public comment, since he was finally informed of the existence of a personnel investigation. Thats all it took.

Why did it take nearly a month? This could have been avoided with a simple response to Mikes email.

Lt. Paterson's opinion, like mine, is constitutionally protected and we have a right to express those as we see fit.

What about the citizens of this community and their constitutional protections? Do they dissipate outside the fence of our parking lot?
