Breaking news: Chief Billdt will retire in March
In last night's marathon closed session City Council meeting, Mayor Pat Morris told the council that Chief Michael Billdt will not seek nor accept a new contract when his current one expires in March, Mayor Pat Morris said Thursday.
"A recruitment takes 4 to 6 months typcially," Morris said. "We're driving forward right now, we told the council Mike's desire to retire."
Morris added that the decision to retire in March 2009 had always been in place, but that it's announcement was delayed by recent calls for the chief's ouster by the police union.
Morris said he asked the chief at the beginning of the summer if he may be interested in another tour, and that Billdt gave him his firm decline in August.
POA President Rich Lawhead said Thursday morning that Billdt must step down immediately and be replaced by an interim leader from outside the department while a national search for a permanent replacement is conducted.

Robert,
The meeting actually began at 5:30 p.m. and most of us left after 9:30 p.m. It was easily a four hour meeting.
Without revealing what happened in closed session, I would characterize the discussion as frank and candid, no holds barred.
I felt some progress was made.

We HAVE to put pressure on the powers that be to bring in a Police Chief that knows absolutely no one in this city. That is beholding to no one! We need a mayor like that too, but will have to wait until the election. Anyone want to bet whether Morris son Jim is his heir to be?
Hey Pat Morris, You are such a lair. Billdt recently asked for a 2 year extention and you know it. One liar taking care of another. It's no wonder San Bernardino City is in such a mess.
I've heard from someone in the Mayor's Office that Jim isn't going to run but what else would he do once Pat is no longer Mayor? (Crawl back under the rock he came from?) When Pat ran for Mayor he had the good will of the community - not so much now. And he spent a lot of "favors" trying to get Milligan elected to replace Penman as City Attorney. Jim doesn't have the charisma that Pat does, so if there is a decent challenger I think the Morris dynasty may end at least until one of Jim's sons are old enough to run or maybe one of Katie's girls will.
I cannot believe that the Mayor would disclose ANYTHING that happened in executive session, specifically related to an employee. That is a direct violation of the law. I cannot tell you what happened in closed session, but I can tell you what didn't and the council was not assured of anything.
Jim and Wendy,
You two can't reveal anything from closed session....my, that's rich!
Awwww. Look at that. It looks like the Mayor's lap dog is being shipped to the pound.
You can't believe anything Mayor Morris says. This is the same guy who was effusive with his public praise of City Manager Fred Wilson, when the fact of the matter is that he was pushing Wilson out the door.
Not that I blame him as Fred Wilson ran this city into the ground.
The point being is that Mayor Morris is more than willing to stretch the truth.
