SB City Fire: Beware fake inspectors
The San Bernardino City Fire Department is warning that con artists are posing as fire inspectors.
"We've had several (reports)," said Manny Sedano, the department's public education officer.
Sedano didn't have an exact number handy for how many people have reported this kind of fraud.
As described by the Fire Department, the imposters' modus operandi is to visit a business while driving an unmarked car and dressed in dark blue pants and t-shirts that can give the illusion that the con artist is an actual department employee.
The con artists tell business owners that they are conducting a routine inspection and sometimes demand to install equipment or signs. They then try to make an illegal buck by asking for a cash payment. Sometimes their marks receive fraudulent invoices.
"They (con artists) wanted to take money up front. We don't do that," Sedano said.
Actual fire inspectors are not allowed to repair or install fire protection equipment, nor can they accept payments nor recommend places to buy equipment.
Other ways to tell if someone is claiming to be an inspector is a fake: Real inspectors wear department-issued badges and shoulder patches and travel in marked vehicles. Authentic inspectors will also show ID upon request. Inspectors also leave a copy of their inspection report at businesses before they leave.
Anyone who thinks they're faced with a fake inspector is advised to call San Bernardino Police at (909) 384-5742.
