Council approves 55 layoffs
The City Council voted 4-1 tonight to approve a package of budget cuts that includes the firings of 55 employees.
Parks maintenance workers will be hit particularly hard. No layoffs were approved for police or firefighters.
The city faces a $9 million operating deficit for the remaining months of the fiscal year.
Councilmen Dennis Baxter, Tobin Brinker, Chas Kelley and Rikke Van Johnson voted for the cuts. Councilwoman Wendy McCammack cast the only "no" vote. Councilwoman Esther Estrada was not present at the meeting, and Mayor Pat Morris said she was ill.
The council cast their votes after listening to about two hours worth of statements from police, parks employees, public services workers and others who were worried about the effects of cutbacks.
The council is scheduled to meet again Thursday for a special meeting to discuss police furloughs.
More to follow in the morning.

First of all I want to say that I feel for those who will be laid off, the city has done an injustice to you, it was their wasteful spending that caused this situation. Weinberg is just a visitor to the city, he will most likely move on, he has only been with the city for a couple of months at best, so the decisions were not that difficult for him and He also makes $23,000.00 per month. Now I am going to say something about the job of a Police Officer.
I don't think that most people realize what the life of a Cop is like. Cops are people just like everyone else. My brother is one, he has a family, wife and kids. Going to work as a Cop is a lot like a soldier going off to war, especially in a city like San Bernardino. The Cops are on the front lines constantly, day in and day out. When the Cop leaves his home and family to go to work, he doesn't know for sure that he will make it home. Veterans who have seen war and some people that have loved ones in the military will understand what I am saying. I have been on several ride alongs with my brother and I can tell you , there truly is a war being fought out there, I would not want to do that job, I am glad that there are people willing to do it. Firefighters have a very dangerous job too but it's different. the fire is not capable of shooting guns and thinking about how to hurt the Firefighter. The Police Officers have the most dangerous job in the city. I don't feel that they should give up anything, that would be like telling soldiers that their pay is being cut when they are about to go off to war. For those of you who do not realize or cannot believe what I am saying about a Police Officer's job, you should go on ride alongs with the Police. Per Capita, San Bernardino has a higher crime rate than Los Angeles.
I understand the life of a Police Officer is hard. Of course it is hard. Especially in the crime ridden streets of San Bernardino. However, as a City employee, parading in the lobby of City Hall, complaining about a 10% CUT IN PAY while coworkers around them are LOSING THEIR JOBS is not only rude, but way out of line.
I am not asking to cut sworn officers from the street. I am, however, asking in fair cuts among Police Administration since the General Administration is being so harshly cut. Could they really not afford one secretary?
This situation is hard for us all. But it's even worse when people you work with push your face just that much deeper in the mud. I hope they enjoyed their press time. God forbid they give up 10% to save their fellow man's livelihood.
To Brother of a Cop,
Couldn't of said it better. There has always been wasteful spending over the years. But don't get caught up (unknown if you are), on the spending on the helicopter, crime impact teams, and Operation Phoenix and think it was all wasteful. In retrospect maybe the Operation Phoenix,(babysitting centers), spending could of been curtailed but all this spending was approved by, supported by, the POA, its membership, and the majority of the council and rightfully the PD admin. It was to finally do something about the out of control crime that has always plagued SB. And believe me despite what you read it did have an impact on the crooks. But until SB changes its way of doing business don't expect long term results. The money has always been drawn from funds like Measure Z, the general fund, and others as situations changed and time passed. I don't think anyone saw this major of an economic issue arising. I won't elaborate further but look at my comments under Feb 18th 148am, Police layoffs or budget fight.
These are criminals that run our county who need to be babysat. They are spending taxpayer dollars lavishly and dining out at our expense. Its like we are slaves. We need to start paying attention to whats going on in our counties and praying to God faithfully because right now the way things are looking in the world not just this county, seems like the only onewecan trust. God Bless stay strong and keep God first.

You said the officers are "rubbing it in your face"? Well let me ask you - do you go to work and risk your life every day? Do you put on regular street clothes or a bullet proof vest?
I understand times are hard but no way is this fair to everyone. There are different types of jobs and they deserve different concessions. Trust me my life is changing too through all this - my home life, the lives of my children all of it. I am facing layoffs also.
However, the risk my husband makes everyday does not compare to that of some of the employees taking furloughs. And there IS a difference. A furlough for you means yes you are getting less pay but you are also not working those days. Not only will my husbnad still be risking his life - he will be taking a cut in pay AND still having to work.
So please don't talk to me about rubbing it in your faces. It will be rubbed in theirs every day when they have to go to work for less money and for an admin, mayor, and citizens who don't respect them.
Police (and fire) should be held to a different standard as they do a different type of service to the city. A service many wouldn't want to do themselves. So don't belittle them and accuse them of whining - you might need them some day! They might risk their lives to save you or one of yours!
Hi Police and Fire:
I have a solution to your issues. Go on welfare and become a criminal. Oh yeah, and you should do drugs too. If you do all of these things, Morris will have more respect for you and would probably be more than willing to work with you.
