The Sun's article on Billdt's announcement

Here's reporter Stacia Glenn's article on Police Chief Michael Billdt choosing to postpone his retirement. This was a late-breaking item and we'll have more as the story develops in the coming days.

By Stacia Glenn
Staff Writer
SAN BERNARDINO -- Police Chief Michael A. Billdt said Thursday that his retirement will be pushed back.

The embattled chief was set to retire in March when his two-year contract expires. City Attorney James F. Penman said Billdt doesn't need a new contract.

"Given the circumstances, the mayor's asked me to stick around and I'm going to do so," Billdt said, declining to give a time length. "As long as it takes me to work through this issue, that's what I'm committed to doing."

Several police officers have expressed dismay that the chief will stay on. Mayor Pat Morris assured the City Council in September that Billdt would retire in March, following the police union's 76 percent no-confidence vote in the chief.

The mayor could not be reached for comment Thursday night.

And the saga continues! It was Mayor Morris who assured the Police Department and the public of the Chief's leaving without question, in March....Now we have the same inept Mayor permitting the continuing dysfunction by asking the problem to remain at the helm to "work through" the issue that they created! And its this same Mayor who is taxing the public for additional police, that now seeks to reduce the number of "boots on the street" because of his and the Chief's mismanagement of our public funds. When are we going to wake up? Mayor, you knew last year of the pending economic doom, and proved so by seeking employee concessions, and initiating layoffs. And in confirming your incompetence, you kept the checkbook open. The only way to solve this problem is for the Mayor to announce his retirement along with Billdt! Its way past the time for change.

WOW, I almost never thought Billdt would have the cajones to pull this ... almost.

Talk about a slap into everybody's face. This guy flip flops more than John Kerry@!

This is from your own blog less than 6 months ago when Robert Rogers wrote it:

"Today's story makes clear that Mayor Morris and Chief Billdt are publicly proclaiming the chief will not serve past March.

They also indicated this has been a longterm decision that has not changed. Morris said Billdt's intention all along was to retire. He said he tried to get him to stay on one last time with an entreaty in August, but Billdt declined.

Billdt himself said he's wanted to pursue new interests and spend time with his family.

Sources in City Hall and the Police Department who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that as recently as three weeks ago Billdt was actively lobbying for a contract extension and telling colleagues he planned to stay on beyond March.

We'll be following this story ... "

Everyone could see this devious plot twist coming since the beginning. Did they ever even start a search for a new chief? They certainly never started the independent audit with Scialdone that they promised ...

Come on Andrew, hold these officials accountable with their own words and actions. Little stories with NO perspective are exactly what they want so they can fool the public.

There's a parade this weekend, I wonder if the POA has a squadron of planes ready to fly...or maybe a float.

Why should we be shocked? Pat Morris will allow the layoff of FORTY-NINE Police Officers after taxing you, the public, to make this city safer. Why have we not heard from the citizens oversight committee regarding Measure Z spending,as promised by the MAYOR? Maybe because they don't meet to review ANY of the expenditures! (That's what I've been told by one of the members)

There's a story that should be explored Andrew!

FIRE THE CHIEF!!!

I heard that the city of SB is going to contact the sheriff's department for policing in an effort to save money. I don't know whether it is true or not but could this possibly save money and allow the city to keep all of the officers and not have to lay off any? rancho cucamonga is policed by the sheriff and they seem to be well staffed.

Ok, this will definately keep the this thread going. I like the chief, I like what he has done with crime in this city! Many neighborhoods are far safer now then they were just a few short years ago. The highly politically interested police officers association has created much of the problems for themselves. Ok, beat me up now for supporting our chief, but if you are one of those who supports night time basketball as opposed to hard knocking police work, your rant on here will fall on my deaf ears.

Bueerman has done a good job said:

Todays paper also has a story about Redlands police department and the cuts and sacrifices they are facing. Chief Bueerman of Redlands PD has planned for this crisis since May of last year. He is accomplishing the budget cuts through salary saving by not filling positions as they become open. That is responsible leadership...see the looming crisis and plan for it. Billdt continued to spend on overtime "corridor" patrols, continued to campaign for a helicopter that the tax base could not afford and even continued to hire cops from other agencies as little as one month ago knowing that the crisis we now face could result in layoffs. Other cities face the same dire circumstances and do not need to lay off employees. Billdt lacks integrity and leadership...he should just go

when your organization mostly hates you you are not an effective leader. crime would have went down last year with or without Billdt. The guy was totally in over his head, rewarded cronies with bogus promotions, and now his mismanagement is probably going to cost the department dozens of hard working officers.

Thanks for that swell helicoper, Mike!!

Hey Joe Turner - how is that recall going?

Maybe we should start rescind Measure Z since we aren't getting our 40 new police officers......

I didn't vote to get more Operation Phoenix Centers!

The honest true fact of the matter is that Billdt has done a good job as many behind the scenes know. He does have a lot of support. He came up through the ranks and has been dedicated to the city and PD for over 30 years. Of course, he has to contend with those with a political agenda, malcontents within the PD, in conjunction with the garbage that has been festered by the POA behind their walls. Have seen it personally. The vote of no confidence was a shame. A handful of people who were held accountable and are traitors have stirred this up for years now. If only fair minded people knew the crap thats been thrown Billdts way they would truly know the injustice.

In reality, Billdt did plan to retire in March. The city is having a hard time finding a replacement because of a few reasons. The housing market and relocation has caused problems. Some don't want to tackle the BS that goes on within city politics, within the ethically broke POA of the last four or so years to name a couple. The mayor and city manager to mention only a couple are fully aware of the malcontents and ones held accountable for their actions, and how they have methodically driven this frenzy within the organization with the help of some in the leadership of the POA.

The Scialdones and others mentioned in the past are also fully aware of the situation within and of those main cops driving this because they dropped the ball and do not like being disciplined. Scialdone doesn't want this mess and supports Billdt. If this whole thing wasn't so sad it would be comical.

Oh, and for you haters and malcontents, this does not come from the administration of the PD. Good luck Chief Billdt, your dealings with some of these egotistical, maniacle, people would test anyones patience. You've handled it honestly and ethically.

also in the know said:

what the above poster failed to mention is that Chief Billdt is a highly dishonest and unethical person, shockingly so for a police leader.

The truth is, and I know this for a fact, Mike Billdt NEVER planned on leaving this March. It was all a ploy. At the time it was announced, he was openly lobbying for a new contract and a raise.

Now that won't happen, but he does have a little more time. I'll tell you this, a whole lot of officers are really shaking in their boots right now, wondering whether Billdt will use his last few months to brutally punish their previous disloyalty. We all know he'll keep rewarding his "Yes Boys."

Like I said, Billdt is highly unethical, and loyalty, revenge, cronyism and retaliation are the hallmarks of his leadership style. Oh, and wasting huge amounts of money too!!

In the know said:

For the readers out there who are level headed and don't have an axe to grind I will respond to the above nonsense one time only. It would be ludicrous for me to go back and forth with this misinformation the above wrote.

Chief Billdt did plan on leaving in March and this was discussed behind the scenes so to speak. He has his time in and has no reason to continue. He IS NOT on some ego trip and is a very ethical person who appreciates loyalty. That is a once noble and honorable trait not displayed by some disgruntled egotistical idiots within the PD. As mentioned in my previous advisal there were some problems getting applicants who wanted to come to SBPD.

Billdt decided to stay on for a temporary time at the request of some in city hall who are aware of the true nonsense that has been manipulated and methodically planned over the past few months and years. The comments about "yes boys" and him wasting money is laughable.

The mayor and others have wanted Chief Billdt to stay on if the truth be known. However, Billdt has wanted to retire after a long and distinguished career to those who truly know him. There was never a "ploy" for a new secret contract. He is only staying on because of these difficult times to help out until a new chief is placed. Its time for these hateful, disguntled, rebelrousers to wise up and act like professionals. Best of luck Chief and keep up the good work despite the crap that will come forth.

Hey Brian ("In the Know"),

You can quit kissing the Chief's ass! You got your unethical promotion, you're safe!

S T said:

Mitch,
You made the accusation and Ester Estrada, had qualms over the promotion, so what is the ethical question here?
State your information for all of us.

also in the know said:

So the malcontents are so powerful that they can influence 76% of the POA to vote no-confidence? Billdt has all the power but the POA has all the truth. In fact, one of the malcontents was demanding a public civil service hearing on his case so that everyone could see the truth. Billdt denied him his hearing by removing all discipline at the last hour before trial. So much for holding malcontents accountable. Billdt should be removed immediately.

Mitch said:

S T,

A good start is in the above thread.

Mitch, or "also in the know",
I read the above, so help us with the complete info so we all are more informed. Truth is what is needed here, not inuendos and tales untold. That is all we get from politicos:" what they allow us to hear and not the whole story". Then they wonder why we are upset with them.
Trust comes from the truth, not gossip. If there is something we ned to know and the truth is one of those necessary ingredients, fill us in.
Thanks

To S T,

You are way off base by calling me Mitch. You don't have a clue but guess away. The complete info will eventually come out. I don't believe some disruptive figures in the PD want that to happen though. They have lost everything up to this point. Give it due time because there are procedures that have to be abided by.

And to the supposed "in the know" above. The vote of no confidence was a sham manipulated by the POA with phone calls and other methods. And some of the malcontents do have enough influence in conjunction with the POA leadership and a handful of self serving politicians.

As far as the public service hearing for one of the malcontents there is more to that than is being said. Maybe a little hint. Admitting wrong doing and dropping the ball. You put it together instead of drinking the kool aid. Give it time.

Good luck Chief, I guess even in police work there is that 10% who walk gingerly on the right side of the law.

I just asked that you would explain your statement above and the un-ethical part. Pretty simple for any 3rd grader to understand. I don't have to guess anything, just like to see someone back up their words or prove they are responsible to what they say.
WORDS MEAN SOMETHING!

to in the know: That "malcontent" that supposedly dropped the ball or admitted wrong doing and did not get discipline? he had two presenters (a Captain and a Lieutenant) at his review board that recommended demotion as punishment. There was Captain Henson and two Lieutenants on the board that agreed with this presentation and demotion as punishment. All of them are cronies of Billdt. Chief Billdt reviewed the entire case and of course agreed with the findings and approved demotion. The next step was the civil service hearing that would allow for the first fair trail in the process. Then Billdt removed all discipline the week before trail?...after two Captians, three Lieutenants and a chief wanted demotion? The "malcontent" then threatened to sue if his punsihment and civil service hearing opportunity was not reinstated but was still denied. He never admitted wrong doing in this case. Billdt knows that holding that malcontent accountable would just reveal his petty, vindictive and retaliatory practices...you need to wake up.

To the above,

You are grossly misinformed and put a nice spin to it. Time will reveal the true nature of this. But then many will crawl under a rock and life will just go on. There are some truths to what you say but much left out that lays out an orderly and ethical process as to what has happened.
