Judge allows police officer furloughs to proceed, for now

| | Comments (8) |

Judge W. Robert Fawke this morning denied the Police Officers Association's attempt to block City Council-approved furloughs.

"I don't see that I actually have the power to step in and take over the legislative process under these particular circumstances," Fawke said in San Bernardino Superior Court.

The police union asserted that the furloughs, intended to save San Bernardino money by cutting police pay by 10 percent, violated the City Charter provision that sets a formula to establish salaries. The city countered San Bernardino faces a fiscal emergency and that the furloughs change officers' work schedules, but not their hourly rates.

This morning's decision does not end the case. Although Fawke rejected the union's plea for a temporary restraining order against furloughs, attorneys for both sides said the police officers' lawsuit against the city's action continues.

As in insider, I will tell you right now, the association is taking this personal. Lawhead has personal issues with the chief. He is not looking at what is best for his members. He needs to go before SBPD completely falls to the ground. Trust me, it is not just Billdt. Lawhead and his cronies are out for blood! And in the meantime, they are just screwing everyone else!

Hey guys - don't be fooled by all that is going on. Yes Bildt and the city are to blame but Lawhead is taking things a little to far.

As our POA president he needs to look out for the best interest of the officers and not his own personal agenda. This is turning into the city, Bildt, Weinberg, Morris, and Lawhead side show and I think we are losing focus on the whole picture.

I am embarrassed by his antics yesterday at the courthouse and calling the city attorney names. This is not professional and not how police officers should react. Come on - these are people we need to work with and we don't want to get a bad reputation. We have always been a professional department lets strive to maintain that reputation and attitude. Lawhead please don't bring us down to the sleazy level of the city and Bildt.

At this point there is a good deal on the table - yes we lose some but look at all we are gaining - not to mention the contract extension. If we don't take this then the city will just take more and who knows what will happen come December - they could take more. This is definitely the lesser of two evils and alot better than what other city employees have gotten. This deal helps to secure our future - and that of our families.

We need to seriously consider this deal and look at the whole picture and think of our families and the long run. I have heard grumbling that people shouldn't have been living out of their means. Alot of us don't live out of our means and what about the people who could pay their bills and were having a good life and something happened in the family - or the spouse lost his job, etc. You don't know everyones financial situation so don't be quick to judge your fellow officer.

This is the time to stand together and look out for all of us and our families for today and the future. Please take the time to read the current deal being offered us and think about the whole picture.

I hope we can stand united through this whole ordeal and we don't let this shadow our reputation as a fine department. I for one am very proud to stand next to each of you everyday and call you my brother.

It's just a sad situation. Lawhead and his groupies are ruining SBPD. Time for you to go away Mr. Lawhead. They could care less of the outcome. They are in it for themselves. They want to fight the city and the chief, nothing more, nothing less. They have nothing to lose. They are obviously clueless as to what is going on around them! I just hope this doesn't influence the decision of the members of SBPD. Do the right thing..for yourself and your family!! Think of the future!

My brother is a young officer at SBPD. I can tell you this. He really has no clue what is going on with the negotiations, etc. Lawhead really isn't giving the guys the heads up. He wants the members to vote against the City. He wants to continue the fight. He says he doesn't want to sway his members but has failed to provide any insight. He is a joke and from what I hear, he really isn't that bright. He should step down from his position. It's really shameful. He has lost sight of what the fight is really for.

Sounds like your brother is going in the right direction. Lawhead is not providing the guys with much info - and doing this for one reason only - his own agenda. The was obvious with his actions yesterday at court calling the city atty. names - while in uniform- not the image the PD should represent.

In pursuing his agenda and his hatred for the current admin he is going to ruin many peoples lives. I hope the officers can see through this and vote to accept the current proposal. It really is in his best interest. Please tell your brother to seek out a sgt. or detective that he trusts and respects and listen to what they have to say - or get the opinions of a few. A few weeks ago the officers who felt different from Lawhead didn't want to speak because they didn't want to sway others, however, I think the majority sees this as the best option and are willing to discuss it. While the ones who side with Lawhead will spout their hatred and say we should fight. Lawhead will say he doesn't want to talk about it because he doesn't want to sway anyone but I wonder how much he actually knows at this point - or he has to be careful not to contradict himself. Basically that is all they say "We should fight"! But have you noticed they (Lawhead, Walker and their followers) don't give a reason as to why they should fight. Or can't give specifics. I am not even sure they know why anymore.

Lawhead is a bright man, however, I truly believe his hatred has taken over the negotiations and influenced some. I hope that the majority of the department votes today and tomorrow to accept the current proposal. Each officer has been given a copy to read - this proposal gives them security beyond this year and has some incentives. Yes they still have a slight loss but it is minimal compared to what can happen if Lawhead continues his vendetta.

Lawhead stop this and do what is best for the guys you were elected to help! See past your own hatred and vendetta and think about the lives of these officers and their families.

I truly hope the officers vote to accept the current proposal. It is what is best for all. I am just concerned for the counting of the votes-will others be present as I personally have lost all trust and respect for the POA and wouldn't put it past them to "miscount" votes in their favor. They have shown us that they put themselves and their agenda before us and our futures.

Please don't let his behavior influence the young guys - tell them to stand up for they believe is right.

This lawhead has that much hatred and "you brothers and sisters in Blue", are allowing him to still carry a gun on our streets.
Heck, "you in blue" have taken our priviledge of ccw's in the city, when we moved from the county to city, from us and yet you let this "loose Cannon" carry more than one weapon legally???????????????????????
That makes me feel real safe: NOT!

S T - As an officer I trust Lawhead 100% with my life-if I were on a call I wouldn't have a problem with him being my back-up! However, I do feel his hatred for the city and current PD admin has taken this too far. I hope we can come to an agreement.

However, I feel also feel your comment above is out of line. It is citizens like you that I have to protect everyday and you don't support us! You seem like a bit of a "loose cannon" yourself!

Thanks!

Trained by one of Riverside's finest, licensed by SBSO's finest and years later, arriving in the city's boundaries, honored the city's requirement to give up the ccw with out fuss. No loose cannon here.
But to have an officer in uniform, supposed leader of SB's finest POA, lose his cool on or at another officer of the court in public view and in front of the same venue they are supposed to work together, would seem there is an" ANGER MANAGEMENT" problem and some counseling due.
I would hope that your training would allow your trust to any of our "finest in Blue".
But this whole episode has brought out some immaturity as some have said, some anger and hurt and extreme selfishness or ego tripping.
I , along with all the citizens of Berdoo, are watching this whole thing unfold and believe me, having shared many ventures with some of your officers, this does not make for solid public relations.
I admit, city hall P R sucks most of the time. Lawhead and who ever is tripping with him, need to back up the "EGO CHOO CHOO TRAIN", cool the steam, and stop trying to wag the dog by the tail.
I have enjoyed being a citizen of trust to the "Blue Uniforms", but recent accounts of Lawhead and his POA demands, caused me to write as I did.
Sorry if I offended you sir, that was not my intentions, but to wonder about a leader, who in his position of trust, should be?
