Council to consider parks staffing

| | Comments (7) |

The City Council is scheduled to vote Monday on a plan designed to keep parks employees working for the city.

The plan includes a move to restore 11 parks maintenance jobs to the budget and have park work performed by city workers instead of contractors. Parks and recreation chief Kevin Hawkins' request for council action reports that this change could save the city about $25,000.

Combined with other personnel moves, Hawkins reports the city can achieve $1.1 million in savings.

In February, then- interim City Manager Mark F. Weinberg proposed a budget cutting plan that would have eliminated San Bernardino's parks maintenance staff. At the time, the City Council preserved a dozen jobs by having city employees perform landscaping jobs, such as mowing the grass that grows on medians, that were previously done by contract workers.

Since February's round of budget cuts, parks employees say there have only been six city employees who were actually charged with taking care of San Bernardino's parkland.

SAN BERNARDINO - Councilman Chas Kelley says a city run water park could provide a way to help money flow into the city's parks system.
Kelley, who has brought the idea up during budget talks earlier this month, said the water park idea comes from a conversation he had with the mayor of an Indiana city at a National League of Cities event.

In four days.Six parks employees do the maintenance work in all city parks, trash pick-up,grafitti removal, bathrooms, edging, blowing, treetrimming, weedeating, irrigation repairs, and many other tasks associated with the parks , two people mow, and two people work friday thru monday to provide minimal services on the weekend, and to utilize a work sentence program, one person maintains Pioneer Cemetary .Talk about "more bang for your buck" this division is doing "more" for way less . And yes I have a great idea for bringing cash to the general fund. Acountability , strengthen what you have, your employees are the greatest asset.think big picture, save for the future, just read the story of Joseph !

WOW...Is Chas looking to advance his political career any time soon? He sure seems to be "all for the people" all of a sudden...so much so, in fact, that he is willing to toss money around willy-nilly.

If it costs more, Chas $$$ Kelley is promoting it!
If it isnt run by government , Chas will make it so!
He sure acts cocky at the council meetings; that is when he is in his assigned seat occassionally.

Chas will be throwing his hat in the Mayoral ring AGAIN.....bet ya! That is why he is "all for the people".
I'd like the velcro him to his seat - he's so little he couldn't get loose. They'd have to have Jim Morris come over and pull him off the seat after the council meeting was over.
His spending is suspect - look at all the $$ he spent on the wall below Castaways and it is looking pretty nasty. You'd think with all the $$ the city spent on nifty, new trucks that wouldn't have a speck of paint on them they could keep his wall looking unpatched.
I guess the city employees can't do a better job than Los Padrinos did. And it's just costing us taxpayers double what Los Padrinos was paid - but they had to pay for the dead trees.....oh well, thanks Chas, it's only money.

Yes its very disrecpectfull the way chas acts at council meetings, (thanks for reminding me). I'm sure thats how he acted when in high school. morris acts like a daddy to him at times motioning to chas to settle down. Funny to watch , but disrespectful to all city residents ! either there in chambers or watching on t.v. Oh and passing notes he's good at that , like i said its like high school. HEY chas hows the pizza ! you know what i mean !
