Fourth Ward Race: Joe Arnett's economic development platform
This is 4th Ward challenger Joe Arnett's platform statement on economic development issues. It is presented without editing.
San Bernardino is heading in the wrong direction on economic development. Building another low-income housing project at Arden Guthrie, as the incumbent proposes to do, will discourage new businesses from locating in our city and drive away existing employers. It sends a message to the business community that San Bernardino's leadership is still not willing to clean up its act. Actions speak louder than words and while people talk about goals to become business friendly this action by the incumbent will do just the opposite.
Our city needs quality businesses and good paying professional jobs, not slum housing, thrift stores or minimum wage employment.
As our new Councilman for the 4th Ward, I will take the following steps to promote economic development and bring jobs to our city:
1) Make San Bernardino more attractive to prospective employers by eliminating graffiti, cleaning up blighted properties and stopping the Arden Guthrie housing project. Businesses want to locate in community that is safe and clean;
2) Reduce excessive city fees, regulations, and wasteful spending to protect local jobs. City government should be a resource, not a roadblock, for our businesses
3) Aggressively market San Bernardino's business assets--such as our airport, our access to major freeways and our local universities (Cal State San Bernardino, Loma Linda University and the University of Redlands)--to attract new employers. We need a marketing plan that works.
4) Use my experience as a High Tech Manager at Loma Linda University to develop new job training partnerships and mentoring programs;
5) Secure federal grants that can be used as an economic incentive to attract environmental and technology businesses to San Bernardino. I want to make our city the "Green Jobs" capitol of the Inland Empire. I have suggested environmental industries and technology jobs are necessary to fundamentally change the job landscape. Bio-fuel technology that can be converted to diesel, jet fuel and other types of energy resources will be significant for our growth and development given the plans for the Airport, light rail system (sBX), train, Onmitrans and other commercial transportation services.
The image of environmental friendly technology is healthy, fresh and new all of which San Bernardino needs.
Quality city services will only be developed and sustained by creating a strong tax base not by increasing taxes. This means more tax payers not more taxes. California residents know all too well the limits of continually increasing taxes on residents isn't sustainable and is a deterrent to home ownership and business development.
The 4th Ward City Councilman is not doing his job. We need fresh leadership and innovative thinking to reduce unemployment and rebuild San Bernardino's economy.

Come on Joe, you can do better than that: The Arden and Gutherie project will eliminate most of the 'project' housing, replacing them with single family and senior citizen housing. As for economic development, next to this housing development is the future site for a new Home Depot. As we speak, the Home Depot project is making its way through the City planning process. Joe you need to do a little better job on you home-work and find out what the facts are instead of listening to Chris Jones and his good buddy Penman. A bio-fuel project will take decades to plan, approve, implement. What we need is something that can be done in the near future like the Arrowhead Springs Hotel project.
Miss Forth apparently hasn't seen the polling data which shows strong DISAPPROVAL among 4th Ward voters for the Arden Guthrie project. The incumbent councilman's vote in favor of this project will cost him a great deal of support at the polls.
Yeah, you are pretty damn smart, you are: Shorett will only get 67% of the vote this time instead of 72.77% of the vote five months ago.
According to one of Miss Forth's earlier posts, Councilman Shorett's lead in the polls has already been reduced by over 50%. Apparently many 4th Ward voters don't agree with his vote in favor of low income housing and cuts in the city's public safety budget.
In addition, Mr. Shorett has lost the support of many of his previous backers. These endorsement losses are helping to drive his declining voter approval even lower.
Sally,
I read that the campaign consultant who managed Shorett's earlier win is now working for Arnett. Is this true?
I also heard that Shorett's new campaign manager is Jim Foster, the disgraced former Dennis Hansberger aide who was forced to leave county employment. Is this true also?
If Ar"nutt" is reall gaining in the polls it could only be due to the unethical and criminal campaign tactics he is endorsing (hello Mr. Good Chistian?)..as he directs his minions to steal & deface Shorett campaign signs and place mailers illegally throughout the 4th Ward.
I guess when 4th Ward voters don't embrace Ar"nutt's" bullying Chicago-style political tactic's he just tell's his bought-and-paid-for union monkey's to break the law. They are use to doing that with taxpayer dollars, so it comes very easy...hey why don'y you guy's use another County vehicle to ride around in during the campaigning? It's not moving day today, is it?
Yeah, Ar"nutts" only economic campaign strategy involves how much 'speacl interest dollars" can he stuff in hs pockets...is that how you paid for that 2 week vacation in Hawaii Joe? Aloha in November Joe.
Chicago Politics appears to relish the idea of fabricating misinformation and using the exact type of politics he describes.
To my knowledge, Arnett has not directed anyone to steal or deface Shorett signs. I do know Arnett has approached residents and talked with neighbors who once had the incumbents sign and flipped the voter. Maybe that is why you see Arnett signs in place of the incumbents.
Arnett had 5 signs up on Shorett's street (Edgerton) early in the campaign as he approached these neighbors and asked permission to have them placed. Everyday for a week they were taken down by someone, and Arnett replaced them. Gee who do you suppose was removing those? Maybe you should check your own closet.
Arnett has never used tax payer money for anything and at his own expense (using no taxpayer money) is broadcasting city council meetings on his website. This kind of public service should be commended.
What has the incumbent done to being greater transparency to city government? Nothing!!! He just has the disgraced Jim Foster running his campaign since he lost his prior manager because of ethical issues.
Finally, your remarks are without merit and not even about economic development. Arnett is in Hawaii for his 10 year wedding anniversary and for a business trip assignment. Arnett is the kind of person we need in office because he is a hard working ethical man (who hasn't been coddled under the protection of a family run business for 30 years). He is honest and accountable with integrity and commitment to his wife who moved to San Bernardino to help care for his mother and father in-law who suffered from terminal cancer. Name another person you know who did for their in-laws.
These types of attributes are desperately needed in San Bernardino when there are people like Chicago Politics who will say whatever they want when the pressure is on. Just like Shorett, say anything to get elected. Shorett will lose in November not because of special interest money, but because of his lack of leadership and irresponsible voting record.
Doesn't it occur to people that when the fire union had supported the incumbent they were not so bad then. Only now, when Shorett faces a possible loss in November does his campaign begin to criticize our public safety employees.
Get real. I hope readers understand Chicago Politics for who he really is.
Hey Chicago, do you think Mr. Shorett supports the 3-Strikes-You're-Out law? What about for drunk drivers?
Well, well...so Ar"nutt" is paying for his 10 year anniversary off the company dole....riding on the backs of special interest and the company he works for....I guess he is a Chicago Politian.
Good for Ar"nutt" taking care of family obligations....that is the right thing to do..it dosen't deserve a medal...that's what we expect from our elected's...doing the right thing, which is why Fred Shorett is the right man for the job.
Shorett did not turn on the fireman, they turned on him. Shorett's pockets and vote's do not accept cash...OK honest Joe...for the record how much $$$$ are you accepting from the unions & PAC's? Why doesn't Ar"nutt"respond with this in his blog?
Oh yeah...I forgot, he is on vacation...let's see...company trip, family outting, working for the City....not bad, the citizen's are only 3rd on the list. I think that we deserve better than No.3.
Chicago is one of the worst places for political corruption in the United States. Mr. "Chicago Politics" seems to be along the same vein.
My husband and I were watching the debates last night on TV. Ar"nutt" seemed to spend more time criticizing and 'philosiphizing' than dealing with any real issues.
It is obvious that he is not true to his beliefs, passions or ideals...this is not a man who can lead our city in a positive direction.
I have seen believers harshly criticize others and their actions, and meanwhile, they are doing nothing at all for the kingdom of God. They are quick to criticize everyone else's efforts, but they are doing nothing themselves other than critiquing.
As Warren Wiersbe has said, "Impatience with God often leads to impatience with God's people. . . . If we start using the sickles on each other, we will miss the harvest."
Saul was a religious man, but he was a godless man. He was running from God. He was attacking Christians. He was thinking he would successfully destroy the Christian faith. But he had a surprise in store on the Damascus Road, because little did he realize that he was about to have an encounter with Jesus Christ himself.
I suggest to Chicago Politics... How about you reveal your identity before you expect Arnett to respond to your highly inflammatory slanderous B.S.! I happen to know only a portion of his plane flight was paid and a meal or two and he does quite a lot of work for the organization throughout the year - for no compensation at all. People like you who have no facts, make accusations, slander character and create divisiveness between people are exactly the kind of person Arnett is not.
It almost isn't worth responding to your comments given that the word "truth" isn't in your vocabulary. How about you call Arnett. I bet even though your an ASS he would call you back, which is much more than residents get from Shorett. And yes, I can give you residents addresses who have called and emailed the incumbent joker - and haven't heard boo. Shorett does't call back or communicate and is only interested in the "Good ol' Boy Entitlements".
At least Arnett is celebrating an Anniversary with his wife, he should have the courtesy. You would want it if you were man enough to do what he has done and put his name publicly to it. All you want to do is criticize. How about you name some of your accomplishments to make San Bernardino better. At least this is a guy who is will to go public with what he thinks and take the criticisms in spite of the fact that your a moron. Laughable. Get a clue. I'll bet you were the bully on the playground too.
