Second Ward Race: Jason Desjardins' economic development platform

| | Comments (25) |

This is 2nd Ward challenger Jason Desjardins' platform statement on economic development. It is not edited.

Economic Development

San Bernardino used to be a regional leader. Today, it's an economic laggard. Businesses are leaving the city and 2nd Ward residents are suffering from high levels of unemployment. It's time to elect a new City Councilman who will focus on bringing new jobs to our community.

As a local business owner with 35 employees, I know what it takes to meet a payroll, operate on a tight budget and create jobs. My ideas to revitalize San Bernardino's economy include:

* Creating a 2nd Ward Business Advisory Council to help me protect local jobs and support our small businesses;

* Setting a strict timetable to clean up graffiti that blights our community. We must make the City of San Bernardino more attractive to encourage new businesses to locate here.

* Reducing excessive utility taxes and cutting the bureaucratic red tape at City Hall. We need to make economic development a top priority for all city agencies.

* Fighting for the 2nd Ward's fair share of funding for business development, job training, parks and city services. We've been ignored for too long at City Hall!

The City Council has done nothing to address the serious unemployment problems affecting our community. The people of the 2nd Ward deserve a Councilman who will roll up his sleeves and provide real leadership to bring economic relief to San Bernardino.

My small business experience and proven commitment to working families have earned the endorsement of the AFL-CIO Central Labor Council and the support of many local businesses.

Let me see, you don't support Baxter becaus he is not a 'union goon', so you think Desjardins is the one for the job.

I think not: Jason, by his own admission to others, first illegally registered to vote at his Big Z Towing business at 274 n. I street. Jason committed felony perjury when he signed the registration form. That is a serious charge.

Jason intended on running against Estrada until he figured out that she is on his side of the political fence. So then, Jason supposedly re-registers at a friends house on Campus Way, barely in the 2nd Ward.
That is clearly carpet-bagging.

Now for Jason the businessman: Jason's Big Z Towing property is a mess and has numerous code violations. His building has broken windows, an illegal sign on the roof, graffiti, he has illegally blocked off Broadway St. with an illegal structure, hazardous waste contamination in his impound yard, and most of all, the building does not meet current earth-quake standards and is required to be reinforced or torn down.

It seems clear to me that if Jason wants to really clean up this city, he would start by cleaning up his own blighted business.

When you consider that Jason is just another Penman tool whose campaign is being run by out-of-town polictical bagman, Chris Jones, Baxter seems to be the better choice.

Issues, not personal attacks, will be decisive in determining the outcome of the 2nd Ward city council election.

2nd Ward voters are very concerned about the incumbent's vote in favor of more housing for sex offenders and parolees. San Bernardino needs to reduce its population of criminals, not give them more incentive to come here.

Issues, not personal attacks, will be decisive in determining the outcome of the 2nd Ward city council election. The incumbent simply has too many personal scandals to win a personality contest.

Enough already said:

Jason needs to go outside of his business and take a look around........he needs to clean up his own mess before worrying about what others are doing.

Valley Girl said:

OK like I finally went by Jason's business and I get what everyone is talking about. It is like so gross. He totally would not make a good council person based on how porrly he takes care of his business. Like OMG is he kidding? His business is the blight of SB.

I am definatley voting for the other guy.

Be Real said:

Ok Valley Girl, who is the other guy? Baxter has allowed blighted disgustingly gross buildings to stand un-cited for 4 years. So which is worse. Driving by it every day for four years and doing nothing, or trying to make a living while the little bastards break your windows, tag your place, and illegally dump crap all over your property all the time? I vote for the guy who employs a bunch of people and who knows how to run a business, all be it, needing a little sprucing up. Baxter can read a script. Good for him.

Katrina said:

OMG Valley Gurl! That get together rocked! Could not believe the zoo! My kids had a great time! Dennis is definitely who I am voting for. Believes in family values. Said so at the fundraiser. Been there for us so me and my cousins are votin for him.

B Real, you accuse Baxter of allowing blight. What you been doing bout that? You pick up the phone and call on everything you see? No one in this city is blameless on the shit that is going on. Everybody could be doing better. Compare Dennis house to Jason's business (cause no one can figure out where that man lives) and Dennis is keeping up his part of the bargin. Dennis is involved in helping keep up the neighborhoods. He talked to Code for me when I had a problem that couldnt get take care of. Lets see results from Jason. Whens he gonna clean up that heap over there on I Street? Hes had how many weeks since he filed and what? Nuthin! Lets see how he does, then we can talk.

Baxter and his his supporters have good reason to be nervous.

Justthefacts said:

Here are the facts:
1. Councilman Baxter voted in favor of more housing for parolees and sex offenders;
2. Councilman Baxter did nothing to combat graffiti during the first 3 and one-half years of his term.

These facts are more important to the voters of the 2nd Ward than the silly personal attacks being made by Baxter supporters on this blog.

Lemming Hunter said:

"Just the Facts" is a misnomer. Dennis didn't vote for parolee housing; he voted against a badly written agenda item that can not stand up in court. More lemmings.
Does "Just the Facts" want Dennis painting graffiti during his off-time? How do you quantify that "Baxter did nothing to combat graffiti"? I know that he worked with my neighborhood to get rid of graffiti.
Broad statements by a person that can't prove anything yet they accuse anyone that disagrees with them of "silly personal attacks".
Sticks and Stones ;P

12 Steps to Baxter's recovery said:

All of these personal attacks against Desjardins are a little over done. He has quite a bit invested $$$ in this city. Just look at the property, trucks and business he owns here. He employs over a dozen people here in our dumpy little town too! Baxter doesn't have any REAL investment in San Bernardino. His parent's house??? Have you driven by it??? It's in terrible disrepair! Hey Baxter! A little paint goes a long way! Or, are you just waiting for it to all flake off? Maybe that should be your new theme... "Flake"? When you lose the election, and your job, are you just gonna flake off and blow away?...back to Sacramento? This blog is getting pretty tedious. It appears there is only one or two people (at the most) trying to tear into eachother. Pretty lame guys...get a life.

Let's get real said:

As if we all don't realize the one trying to tear into Baxter is Wendy. Duh!

Why don't you go back to your own ward and deal with your own issues.

Wendy McCammack said:

What?????????? Where did that jab come from? I don't have to blast Baxter as his record stands on its own. He did, in fact, vote to build/rehab 100 more very low income apartment units (8 million), and maybe eventually build some senior and single family units (in the document as a carrot). It was a creatively written agenda item that Baxter may not have understood, but I wouldn't be admitting to that. He did in fact vote to cut or leave vacant 14 firefighter slots, 22 police officers, and 70 more in library staff, street department, parks and rec staff (NOT operation Phoenix people) and he did in fact vote to hire a $169,000 per year PR person. These are all facts, and Wendy McCammack doesn't need to inform anyone of that record. Look it up on the City's web site under the minutes of council meetings. I like Dennis, I just disagree with his priorities and his votes. I believe that is the democratic process. But then again, Dennis never asked for my endorsement and neither did Fred Shorett, as I have endorsed, and pray, that Joe Arnett wins the election for the fourth ward.

Sparky said:

Wendy, you are a bit long in the tooth to play the ingenue so do us all a favor and can it. "Where did that jab come from?" Looks like in the back, your favorite spot to stab someone.
I would hazard a guess that Dennis never bothered to ask for your endorsement because he knew you and your buddy Penman were trying to hustle up talent to run against him. Don't think that you are that good at hiding what you are up to. Jason was just something that the cat drug in and you jumped on.
Just because you put it in print doesn't mean its true. WAIT! STOP! Don't start with the bit theatrics - I've seen enough of your performances on channel 3 to last a lifetime.
You disagree with Dennis because he isn't signing on to your little game and you aren't getting your way. You tried to cozy up to him once, it didn't work, and now you are out for his seat. Desperate, sad, and bitter. Not flattering on a woman of your age and experience.
Why don't you stay on your side of Highland Avenue and work on your ward, it's far from perfect and could use some more of your TLC. Leave 2nd ward politics to the second ward residents cause you are no King Maker.

DEBI: Why are you so catty to Wendy. I thought she was your friend?

Sparky said:

Sorry, you have the wrong person.

Enough already said:

First of all Wendy doesn't have any friends. Even Penman would toss out the baby with the bath water.

Secondly, Put the lid on Jar-Man by telling Wendy to shut the h@ll up.

Thank God Baxter and Estrada wear glasses, I only hope for their sake that they are impact resistant.

The upstart 2nd Ward canidate 'JD', "as he is so affectionately called", has allot to learn about blighted neighborhoods alright...him and his business partners have been responsible for everything from illegal parking of vehicles, soil contamination, violation of fire codes, and a few more criminal activities ....where is our city's legal watchdog on these issues?

Has anyone asked our City Attoney why he has not investigated these violations...oh yeah, that's right...he is on the hot trail of another Christian...hey, I here that 4th Ward canidate Ar"nutt" is a Christain, it should be easy to catch him...just look inside your pocket! It must be getting a little tight in there with JD, Ar"nutt", and the rest of the hoard. Must be a pretty big pocket.

Let the Holy Wars begin!!!!

My family and I met with Jason Desjardins and we are grateful for his courage to run for City Council and his desire to clean up the grotesque state of disrepair of the second Ward that Baxter neglected to see during his term. It is also unfortunate that we left ourselves be deceived by Baxter when he promised to take care of his ward and represent his people.

In his four year term, Baxter did nothing to improve the image of his ward, nor brought ideas, and no matter how many times we asked him to bring up an issue at city hall, he never got the guts to stand up for his people, as he promised. His main priority is to be the Mayor's doormat and fall asleep on his chair for being inebriated. I say to Baxter: "YOU LIED." But no more, Baxtard. You are out because we are not voting for you again and we are voting you out for negligence and inadequacy. We need a real fighter at city hall and the only obvious one is Jason Desjardins, not the one who failed to act.

Thank you Jason for giving the second ward the hope to revitalilze it and perhaps saving the city of San Bernardino from more San Bernarghetto future.

TO LMAO; you must be one bitter individual to bring someones weight into the mix. This is a political blog/commentary. Do you know what that is? It doesn't mean you can personally attack the appearance of someone. How old are you? You seriously need to grow up. And, yes jackass, Wendy does have friends. I happen to be one of many. So, yes your comments offended me on her behalf. You must be a liberal nut to have said something so stupid. If you want this city to continue to be a parolee dumping ground and graffiti marked town, by all means continue to support Baxter, Morris and Shorett. Or, if you have a brain and want to see the city prosper, have guts to make the change and vote for Arnett, Desjardins and Penman!!!

Reading the comments is like watching a group of 10 year olds on the playground. Name calling and pointing the fingers. The point is we need to take some action that will make our ward what it used to be. Elect a person that will have the back bone to stand up for the people of 2nd ward, not what is in the best interest for just him or to be a puppet for the mayor. The last four years we have not received our fair share of funds to make the improvemts that are much needed. I have said it before, is it because we are below Highland Ave? Baxter lives in his mothers house, which could use some repair and cleaning up. His promises are leaves in the wind, gone. VOTE FOR JASON DESJARDINS and see if he can make some changes, as we know for sure the Baxter has not the last four years.

12 REASONS TO VOTE FOR __DENNIS BAXTER__
and,
{{{12 REASONS NOT to vote for Jason DesJardines}}}

1. Native Son

{{{Some clueless stranger from L.A.Co. who readily admits to commuting to and from his residence there and "only renting a place in 2nd ward to have a residential address to appease the candidate requirements - This is what Penman's 1992 candidate, Fred Curlin of the infamous San Bernardino Four did - and look where THAT got us all!}}}

2. Ward 2 resident homeowner

{{{only recently rented an ill-kept home over on Campus Way by the 215 after learning his small first ward business did not qualify him to run here - it wasn't until this week he even gave the yard a long-overdue mowing!}}}

3. Knows our ward's history inside & out

{{{All his talk about his life before this month, in Los Angeles County's various cities is interesting and I appreciate him sharing, but it serves no purpose here in this ward where we benefit more than we may realize by having Dennis be able to "see in his mind's eye" PRECISELY the location you are calling about - Jason needs GPS, or as he states for a preference, a pair of City employees driving him around the ward - weekends only, he says - FORGET weekday access, apparently - afterall he keeps reiterating how he's a struggling small business unable to even slap on paint and replace broken windows in all the years since he purchased the place...}}}

4. Knows our ward's location & zip codes

{{{continues to send out mail to all registered voters indicating his address as having a 92408 zip code - check your mailer from him! - See? He's beyond inattentive to details and clueless - doesn't even know what zip code he rented in! Then again, he does have that long commute he has complained to us all about - you know, the one making him decide to sleep in the tow yard with open broken windows instead of drive all the way back to his "REAL HOME" in L.A.Co.}}}

5. Knows our ward's "hot spots" for trouble

{{{While Dennis is often seen walking the ward, unescorted - Jason is consistently seen being led by a member of the Penman delegation - he doesn't know where to go, in the least - just look where he rented! - What? Like there aren't a bazillion other homes for rent at the same price in WAY BETTER corners of this ward? PLEASE!}}}

6. Knows our city hall departments well

{{{Jason is _SO_ clueless! How clueless is he? He thinks (and has said!) San Bernardino can just allocate an officer-driven patrol unit to him, with a Code Officer escort serving as his secretary! - No joke! - Check the published statements he's already made! - This is NOT hoity-toity Malibu and we can't afford to "treat him in the manner he's (apparently) already accustomed".}}}

7. Knows our city budget's constraints

{{{Jason, arriving in ward 2 from his Malibu past, immediately let it be known he will allocate already limited City services to himself every weekend, without even a cursory glance at the many-years-long wish list at city hall for more code officers - Jason wants one to escort him through the ward, taking notes from him - MAYBE that's how things work in Malibu, but out here in the ward we're intelligent, frugal and efficient - we know we get more ground covered by letting code do their job while we serve as another set of eyes for them- NOT by tapping them (with an officer-driven police cruiser, no less! - to "play tour guide & secretary to Mr. I'm a stranger in a strange land, GUIDE ME!"}}}

8. Knows our taxpayer wish list priorities

{{{Jason's top item was to tool around the ward every weekend, chauffered by a patrol officer and escorted by a code enforcement officer, THAT, I assure you is NOT _ANY_ ward 2 resident's top priority!}}}

9. Knows how to communicate effectively

{{{As one of Penman's hand-picked, he will spiral into the chaos of Wendy, or, the "barking"(LITERALLY - he BARKS on camera during council votes!) of Kelly, or worse - There have been ZERO exceptions to this "rule".}}}

10.Knows how to get results citywide (Fresh & Easy neighbors our ward and may have languished like Riverside Ave. & 210 location + Mt. View & Redlands Blvd, LL location, but Dennis partnered with Mayor Morris when Wendy "couldn't be bothered" and tah-dah, what opened last week - before Loma Linda & before Rialto? OUR Fresh & Easy!

{{{Jason hasn't even been able to figure out how to beautify the tow yard he bought several years ago in Ward One and has admitted to sleeping in because his home in L.A.Co. is so far away from SBCo. - So, he rented a place by the 215 on Campus Way a couple of weeks ago, to meet residency requirements, technically}}}

11. Attends all community functions, from neighborhood meetings on down the line AND chairs AND serves on the Boards of MANY ward and city entities, such as 4th of July Parade / Friends of Roosevelt Bowl / Perris Hill NCA...

{{{Whoops! He's at least got excuses, like not having lived here, and the traffic back to his real home in L.A. Co.}}}

12. Has earned the support of the overwhelming majority of voters here, (61% to 39%), see these results in their official site by following the link below,

This ward, like 2/3 of San Bernardino, does-not-like-Penman-at-all. If you notice, the mayoral results and ward 2 results are quite similar. Clearly, we oppose Penman with a vengence in this ward and support our mayor with equal energy.

This election will be no different.

Since we were duped into accepting Penman's last "appointee" to represent us on the council, Highland resident Fred Curlin, one of the infamous dastardly "San Bernardino Four", we have managed to maintain ourselves free of the indignity of association with Penman by voting down the carpetbaggers he lines up each election. We will NOT be duped by Penman again! People may say what they will about the people living south of Highland Ave. - about ALL ward residents in general, but we are NOT STUPID and we do NOT FORGET.

We're human, we made a mistake in 1992 - we will NOT make that same mistake twice by falling for Penman's latest "plant" in our ward!

The wealthy and power hungry Penman with his little troupe of players as court jesters, all clueless as to how they're being manipulated by him... They allow their egos to be soothed with empty promises never fulfilled, (Yeah, right, "the timing's not right" - it-never-will-be, you're being used! - wake up and see reality, please - for all our own good).

To end on a positive note, San Bernardio's scraping off a lot of mud cast upon us for too many years by Penman and his cohorts on high. It's so bad we need a PR person to snag the momentum from our current blessing of being in the national spotlight in a positive way, for a change - thanks to Mayor Morris' invitation to The White House & National League of Cities acclaim for Operation Phoenix successes!
We're casting off the debris from decades of __________ and going ever faster toward the finish line.
The largest and most obstinate clod remaining to be removed is Penman. A recall is organizing to address that. This is the contact information to communicate either discretely through e-mail, or more socially through Facebook,

There is no shame in being a resident of the second ward. There is shame in falling for the same trick twice - especially after being warned in great detail.
