The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will give nearly $90,000 to the Housing Authority of the County of San Bernardino to aid the homeless and disabled, housing officials announced Wednesday.

The grant was awarded through the federal government's Shelter Plus Care Program. The funds can be used for rental subsidies for families who are referred to the Housing Authority through the San Bernardino County Department of Behavioral Health.

Behavioral Health personnel provide services such as job training, health care and educational assistance. Participants are required to spend 20 hours per week in community service, work or attending class.

The Housing Authority reports that within San Bernardino County, eight service providers received grants totaling about $2.1 million.
