Saturday’s college picks

Well, I didn’t get off to too hot of a start on Thursday, missing Maryland by a half-point and simply choking on the TCU pick (I actually lost money to my online bookie for that – thanks a lot Horned Frogs). But I’ve done well for the most part in this young season, so let’s just see what we can get going this week with these 8 games.

USC (-9.5) at Nebraska: I used to really dislike Nebraska, but I changed during the 2005 Alamo Bowl, when the Cornhusker fans were extremely nice to our Michigan contingent, buying my friends and I shots of this while even offering one of my med school friends an apprenticeship. So I want the Cornhuskers to cover this spread. But they won’t. Nebraska is not quite ready for the Big Boy table and will be hearing a lot of this tomorrow.

USC 31, Nebraska 13

UCLA (-15.5) at Utah
If only Alta Loma alum Eric Weddle were still with the Utes, this game might actually be good. However, Utah has no quarterback and at 0-2, has very little clue about much of anything. Oh well, UCLA makes it to 3-0 without getting their uniforms too dirty.
UCLA 27, Utah 9

Ohio State (-3.5) at Washington
I have a feeling that this will be Ty Willingham’s big showcase. The Buckeyes, especially on offense, look a little suspect while the Huskies have hotshot redshirt freshman quarterback Jake Locker and a crowd that will be purple and punchy, to say the least. Expect the upset and another black eye for the Big Ten.
Washington 21, Ohio State 17

Tennessee (+7.5) at Florida
For anyone who likes offensive football, typically SEC games aren’t the thing for you. It’s 7-3 with a bunch of punts, a few drowsy mascots and co-eds that are three sheets to the wind. Ok, so SEC games aren’t all that bad. Anyway, this one will be a borderline shootout. Both the Vols and Gators have struggled on D this season (Florida gave up 31 to Troy for instance) and both average well over 30 points a game. I think the Gators have a little bit more firepower and grab this win.
Florida 34, Tennessee 23

Boston College (+6.5) at Georgia Tech
Yeah, I realize the ACC doesn’t really matter until the basketball season tips off. But this could be the Eagles best team since this guy played in Massachusetts, while Tech might be the most complete team in the conference and best chance not to get embarrassed in a BCS bowl. B.C. is crafty, but I like the sting of these Jackets.
Georgia Tech 24, Boston College 19

Louisville (-5.5) at Kentucky
Whatever you do, take the over in this game. I don’t care that it’s at 76 or somewhere around there. It’s like the Long Beach State-Tennessee first-round tournament game, the over is in danger no matter how high it is. I psyched myself out of that LBSU-Tennessee 168.5 over/under in March because of that, only to regret it when the teams got 115 in the first half alone. Don’t be a jerk like me and make that mistake in this game.
Louisville 49, Kentucky 41

Fresno State (-16.5) at Oregon
I’m still pretty angry at the Ducks for embarrassing my alma mater, but whatever, it’s really Michigan’s fault for acting like a bunch of pansies. Neither of these teams have played like pansies thus far, with Fresno going three OTs with Texas A&M and Oregon doing what I’ve already mentioned before. It will be interesting to see who has the real letdown here.
Oregon 38, Fresno State 24

Before we go into the last pick, here’s a little hint of what will happen in said game Saturday.

Notre Dame (+8.0) at Michigan
Yeah, this game is horrid and if I wasn’t a huge fan of one of these teams, I’d boycott this out of principle. In one corner you have a redheaded stepchild who hasn’t scored an offensive touchdown and who has the worst defense in the nation. In the other corner, you have the gaggle of sissies who lost to a I-AA team and gave up so many yards against Oregon that their fans were crying in the stands. Whoever loses this slapfight should just not show up for the rest of the season.
Michigan 20, Notre Dame 10
