High school bonanza

I must say that Carter looked extremely impressive against Rialto last night. Fast, aggressive, mean – how the heck did those guys lose three games? Anyway, here I am, seperating the winners from the other guys. Since I went 8-1-1 last week, you should listen to me.

Apple Valley at Hesperia
The battle in the desert is where I’ll be in a couple hours, as the big, bad Sun Devils from Apple Valley come into Hesperia to face a Scorpions team that has given up nine, yes nine, points all season. However, Hesperia hasn’t exactly been playing Concord De La Salle during that stretch. I think Apple Valley goes in and gets the big MRL road victory.

Fontana at Redlands East Valley
Lance Ozier is a good guy. But he’s not going to feel too good after this game. The Wildcats, who are inexplicably playing only their second home game this season, has been smacking fools around lately, winning their last three games by a combined score of 150-20. Don’t expect the Steelers to make much of a dent in this game.

Sultana at Serrano
Another great league-opening tilt in the uber-competitive Mojave River League. Serrano has been so good this year in going 5-0 and taking the top ranking in the CIF-Eastern Division that their coach is shocked. Sultana is a hard-nosed, solid team who is capable of hanging with the Diamondbacks. I’m not picking against Serrano though – I’ve learned my lesson.

Miller at Yucaipa
First the Thunderbirds have to deal with Chris Polk and REV. This week they have A.J. Springer and the Rebels. Next week they have DeSean Jackson and Cal. OK, the last one is obviously untrue, but it doesn’t feel that great to be Yucaipa at this point. Springer and the Rebels should have a field day, staying unbeaten.
Miller 36, Yucaipa 13

San Gorgonio at Arroyo Valley
The Hawks were the most impressive San Andreas League team in the non-league season, going 3-1-1 and barely losing a tough road game to Moreno Valley. San G, who started 1-5 a year ago, saw a five-game winning streak begin with a win over Arroyo last year. Don’t count on that happening again.
Arroyo Valley 35, San Gorgonio 22

Cajon at Colton
These teams were regarded as the SAL favorites in the preseason, but struggled to a combined 3-7 record in the non-league season. Granted, both teams played some solid to elite competition. I like what I saw out of Colton in the non-league more and think they’ll batter the Cowboys a bit.
Colton 28, Cajon 16

Redlands at Eisenhower
Jim Walker’s nightmare ended last week, as the Terriers broke out offensively in a 30-15 win over Fohi. Actually, Walker was probably less worried about the Terriers’ record than most, as he feels that Redlands is ready to do some things in the CBL season. Ike could use a win, but probably won’t get one tonight.
Redlands 21, Eisenhower 13

Jurupa Valley at Bloomington
On the surface, this should be a laugher, as the Bruins have put up 179 points (yes, that’s not a misprint or me making up stuff again) on Jurupa the last two years. Jurupa is looking like the most improved team in a weakened Sunkist League and could surprise some. I’m not ready to pick them to win against Don Markham, but it won’t be 109-0 like it was two years ago.
Bloomington 40, Jurupa Valley 34

San Bernardino at Pacific
San Berdoo has quietly putting together a decent season, already winning three games – including a sizable upset of Apple Valley two weeks ago – after winning two a year ago. The Cardinals could have a winning streak of 3 if they take down pesky Pacific. The Pirates, losers of 16 straight, have been decent on D but can’t score on O. San Berdoo will roll on, setting up the Robert Fuller bowl next week.
San Bernardino 17, Pacific 6

Ridgecrest Burroughs at Victor Valley
This is a high school pillow fight, with the host Jackrabbits on a 16-game skid and the visiting Burros having won 9 straight. Of the two, Victor Valley has been closer, coming a failed two-point conversion short of besting Rialto. I expect the Jackrabbits to end their nightmare, if just temporarily, tonight.
