Thursday quickie pick

Anyone who is looking for a Joe Torre retrospective in this space can turn to ESPN. I’m pretty sure they are pre-empting the rest of their programming for reaction to Torre gaining some perspective and running away from George Steinbrenner. But I digress.

Here are the picks for tonight. In high school I was 9-2 last week (thanks Victor Valley) while I was about as graceful with my college picks as Philip Rivers was on his touchdown run a couple weeks ago against the Denver Broncos. Trust me, it was gawky.

Bloomington at Kaiser
If you are looking for some old-school football wizardy, come to Steeler Stadium tonight. In one corner you got Don Markham, he of the 306 wins and the double-wing offense. In the other corner, you got Dick Bruich, he of 282 wins, countless CIF titles and an undefeated record over six-plus years in the Sunkist League. Kaiser has always been the scratch atop of Bloomington’s mouth, but at 1-5, the Cats are as vunerable as they’ll ever be. If the Bruins don’t pull this out, it ain’t happening as long as Bruich is at Kaiser.
Bloomington 22, Kaiser 16

South Florida (-2.5) at Rutgers
In my opinion, the Bulls are the No. 1 team in the nation right now. They are undefeated and unlike Ohio State and Boston College, they have beaten quality opponents (West Virginia and Auburn on the road) en route to their perfect mark. I think its an extremely irresponsible take by people like ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit to suggest that USF, even if undefeated, shouldn’t get a shot at the national title game. If the Bulls beat Rutgers, another quality team, on the road tonight, I’ll expound on that more. I’m predicting that I will be blathering come Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday at the latest.
South Florida 24, Rutgers 17
