Another Colony championship

In the rich get richer category, Colony High School won its second team CIF championship of the 2007-08 school year about an hour ago, defeating Mt. Baldy League and crosstown rival Chaffey, 57-53.

It wasn’t the most artistic game, but rivalry games on foreign floors very rarely are. I was impressed by Colony guard Haley White’s 3-point shooting, the rebounding of Colony junior center Camille Buckley, the tenacity of Chaffey and the extreme blue of the Walter Pyramid.

As far as game stuff goes, White hit four treys en route to 16 points while Buckley pulled down 17 rebounds. Colony guard Amani Butler, who will be playing at Arizona next season, added 16 as well. Chaffey was down pretty much the entire game but had its moments, including a chance to go ahead with 4:30 left. However, Trameka Thomas missed two free throws and Colony ran off a 13-4 run to seal the deal.

As far the Pyramid is concerned, today is my first experience with it. Embarrasingly, I couldn’t find it at first, even though its blue, pointy and not remotely subtle at all. I guess I wasn’t expecting it to stand out as much as it did. It looks a lot like the Luxor inside (save the slot machines and random ads for the Blue Man Group). Now if only I can get a comped hotel room…

Anyway, in a scheduling quirk, my next game to cover is the Miller-Los Osos battle at 8:15 p.m. I figured I’d blog from the beach while getting shot down by bikini-clad hotties, but in an unlucky break, the weather decided to get cold and misty after being 80 and sunny all week. Bollocks.
