New era at San Gorgonio

Ron Gueringer has seen quite a bit of success during his last six years as an assistant at Corona Centennial, helping the Huskies win two consecutive CIF-SS Inland Division championships and a large-school state championship in 2008. He now brings that winning aura to San Gorgonio High School, replacing Randy Stevens.

Gueringer, who was the head coach at Centennial, Moreno Valley Valley View and Encino Crespi from 1995-2002 before rejoining the Huskies as an assistant coach in 2003, is happy to be a head coach again.

“I realized after a while that I missed being that head guy, the guy who really truly devises that Friday gameplan,” Gueringer said. “I love being the head coach on the field. The off-the-field stuff can get tiring, but I’m glad to be back out there.”

Gueringer was dealt a decent hand as new coaches go, as the Spartans finished second in the San Andreas League with a 4-1 league record before losing to Chino Hills in the first round of the Central Division playoffs. However, the Spartans will have two big holes to fill on offense, losing do-everything quarterback T.J. Smith and leading rusher Tre Meadors from last year’s team.

That, along with bringing in a new system, has the San Gorgonio offense in a bit of flux. There will be pressure on junior quarterback Daylin Contreras and junior running back Mike Martin to complement a deep, talented cadre of quick, fast, experienced wide receivers.

“The biggest key to our success is preventing mistakes, and when I talk about mistakes, I’m not necessarily referring to turnovers,” Gueringer said. “I’m talking about executing assignments, being in the right place at the right time. In a new system, that can take a bit of a time, but the quicker it happens, the better off we’ll be.”

The Spartans will be aided quite a bit by a talented, experienced defensive front and one of the best kickers in the area in Jimmy Chester. San G is hoping that Chester, a Division I prospect thanks to his booming right leg, defensive linemen Paul Rodriguez and Brian Pratt and linebacker Derrick Osborne – an SAL wrestling champion – can help compensate for any growing pains the offense may feel.
