Late addition gives Arroyo Valley momentum

Arroyo Valley football coach Marcus Soward was feeling pretty high on his team’s chances a couple of weeks now. After star quarterback Michael Yearwood returned earlier this week, he’s ecstatic.

“We are really excited to have Michael back,” Soward said. “I thought we had a good team without him but when you can bring a guy like him back, it just opens up a lot of doors.”

It’s hard to blame Soward for being giddy. Yearwood was a force for Arroyo Valley last year as a junior transfer from Los Angeles University High School, passing for 2,306 yards and 20 touchdowns while running for another 1,127 yards and 16 scores. He transferred back to University in the spring to help attend to an ailing grandmother in Los Angeles before coming back.

Yearwood will have plenty of weapons at his disposal, namely multi-talented wide receiver Angel Rivera. Rivera (6-0, 190) was being considered at quarterback, but Yearwood’s return gives him a chance to showcase his array of skills out wide.

“Angel is the complete package,” Soward said. “He can catch, run out of the backfield, play defense, return kicks, he can do it all. We are pretty excited to put him out there and see what kind of plays he’ll make.”

The Hawks will also have sophomore Jalen Amis (5-10, 175) and junior burner Ahmad Cummings (5-11, 180) at receiver, with senior Israel Musgray (6-0, 190) and sophomore David Pickett (5-9, 180) running behind an offensive line led by junior Jacob Charles (6-3, 295) and senior Jonathan Lopez (6-0, 300).

Defensively, the Hawks will be strong in the safety, led by senior cornerback Tony Wilson (5-8, 170). Wilson is getting Division I interest and will be joined by Rivera and senior D.J. Thornton (5-8,150). Junior ReShawn Hooker (6-1, 195) will lead the linebacker corps while Charles and Lopez get time on the defensive line.
