Lavrusky, Hunter-Simms take home Hubbs awards

It was an historical night for the Ken Hubbs Award on Monday night at Colton High School.
For the first time in the history of the award (which became the Ken Hubbs Award in 1973), there were female honorees.
Yucaipa’s Kodi Lavrusky took home the inaugural girls award, while San Gorgonio’s Ryan Hunter-Simms took home the boys award.

Colony QB Simko fighting for Chino Hills starting job

Colony High School junior quarterback Matt Simko transferred to Chino Hills High School on Monday and had his eligibility approved by CIF Thursday per his family’s residence change. The Mt. Baldy League offensive player of the year last season has joined Chino Hills spring practice and is competing for the starting quarterback job with Zach Chadwick, who also plays linebacker.

All indications from Chino Hills coach Derek Bub are that he would love to avoid playing Chadwick both ways and the 6-foot-3 Simko’s arrival will likely make that an easy decision.

“I didn’t have any idea this was happening before Friday,” Bub said. “But he is going to help us a lot. He’s a great drop back passer with a cannon for an arm. He’s a ‘yes sir, no sir’ kid and all he’s done is work hard.”

RC’s Goodman looking to add to 25 scholarship offers

“More is always better,” as far as Tahaan Goodman is concerned. The Rancho Cucamonga four-star safety has already exceeded his expectations having pulled in 25 scholarship offers in the last few months. But the 6-foot-2, 185-pound junior is committed to remaining uncommitted. Though he has offers from LSU, Oklahoma, Florida, Nebraska, Boise State, USC and Oklahoma State, to name a few, his ears will remain open until he finishes his recruiting trips in the fall.

The two official visits cemented in his schedule are LSU and Hawaii. Goodman has already taken unofficial trips to USC, UCLA, Cal and Arizona State and plans to visit San Diego State this weekend.

“It’s hard sometimes when you go to a school and it makes you want to commit right away,” Goodman said. “But then I just think about all the schools I haven’t seen yet. I’ve always said I want to see everything that I can before I make this decision.”

CBL track finals results

As requested by several people, here are the Citrus Belt League Track and Field Finals Results from Redlands High on Thursday.
I have listed all of the times and marks I know qualify for CIF. Winners automatically qualify, 2nd and 3rd if they meet standard and at-large if they meet another standard.
I don’t know what division each school is in, so I’m going with the Division 1 standard to determine who qualifies for the CIF-SS Prelims among 2nd and 3rd place finishers.

The “U.S. Top 100 Elite Performances” according to dyestatcal.com, are:
Redlands’ Margaux Jones in the 100 meters (11.82 seconds) and in the long jump (19-7, in the prelims, although her 19-2 in the finals also was “elite”). REV’s Connor Vigil ran a 1:53.83 time in the 800 meters, although that was in the Prelims and he ran slower in the finals. Likewise for Redlands’ Walter Jones, who went 24-5 1/2 in the long jump prelims, which was elite. His finals mark was not considered “elite.”

All of the below should be CIF qualifiers:
Event 1 GIRLS 4×100 Meter Relay

Maldonado, Hunter-Simms, Cajon girls set records at SAL track finals

There were some great performances on Thursday at the San Andreas League track finals at San Gorgonio.
Pacific’s Quincy Ross (100 and 200), San Gorgonio’s Ryan Rittenhouse (1600 and 3200) and San Gorgonio’s Ryan Hunter-Simms (shot and discus) each won multiple individual events on the boys side. My apologies to Quincy Ross, who was not mentioned in my story that is in Friday’s paper. I think it was at least initially announced that Ross did not win one of those two races, but once I looked at the results (too late) I realized he’s listed as winning both.
On the girls side, Cajon’s Haley Sanner (100 hurdles and 300 hurdles) and Ayana Gales (long jump and triple jump) as well as Pacific’s Gabriela Maldonado (800, 1600, and 3200) took home multiple events.
Hunter-Simms set a new
