The biggest surprise winners?

Etiwanda softball, which was up-and-down all year, is up now after beating the No. 3 seed, Marina.

Ayala softball, which needed to get into the Division 2 playoffs as a wild-card because they finished in a three-way tie for second in the Sierra League and lost the tie breaker, knocked off No. 1 Mission Viejo.

Biggest surprise losers?

You need look no farther than Division 5, where Jurupa Hills coach Scott Cartzdafner said he was “more than positive” his team would face league rival Citrus Valley in the CIF Final.

Not only did Jurupa Hills lose to Covina Northview 7-1, but top-seeded and defending Division 6 champion Citrus Valley also lost 4-2, to Baldwin Park Sierra Vista.

Redlands East Valley baseball was not a huge favorite to win the Division 2 title, even though the Wildcats were seeded No. 1. I thought they had a decent shot to win CIF, but would not have been surprised had they lost. However, losing in the second round as a No. 1 seed has to be a surprise for anyone.

Sun/Bulletin baseball teams went 8-3 in the second round, with Kaiser’s game still to play on Wednesday.

Sun/Bulletin softball teams went 14-8, including the Chino Hills/Yucaipa softball game where 2 locals faced each other. Can you imagine if the 3 upset losses hadn’t happened? Then area softball would’ve been 16-6 and baseball would’ve been 9-2. Very impressive.

I will post the schedule for next round of games on Wednesday. Softball quarterfinals are Thursday, baseball are Friday.
