Did February injury cost Rancho track star her final shot at a state title?

After finishing second in the state in both hurdling events last year, Rancho Cucamonga’s Jordie Munford has been nowhere to be found. Turns out she was nursing a hamstring injury suffered in late February, just weeks after signing with Oregon.

Munford finally made her 2013 debut over the weekend at the Mt. SAC Relays, finishing fourth in the 300 hurdles, an event in which she finished second in the state not only last year, but in 2010 as well.

All CIF-Southern Section boys and girls basketball teams

As it turned out, the Etiwanda and Santa Ana Mater Dei boys basketball teams each ended the season with a championship. Perhaps it’s only fitting that the teams’ star players share Southern California’s top individual award.

After leading the team to the school’s first CIF title in eight years, Etiwanda’s Jordan McLaughlin (right) was named the CIF-SS Division 1AA co-Player of the Year along with Mater Dei’s Stanley Johnson on Monday.

Etiwanda defeated Mater Dei in the CIF-SS championship game only to lose two weeks later in the CIF State tournament semifinals to a Mater Dei team on the way to its third straight state title. Etiwanda’s Dave Kleckner was granted sole possession of the CIF-SS Coach of the Year award after leading the No. 6 seed to the first championship since current NBA players Darren Collison and Jeff Pendergraph helped the Eagles to the 2005 CIF title.

Etiwanda boys wasn’t the only county program with top honors in its division, Division 5A girls champion Mesa Grande Academy got Coach of the year and co-Players of the Year in its division.

All-Sunkist League girls basketball team: Kaiser’s Dodson MVP

Winning the first league championship in school history doesn’t entirely encapsulate the depth of the Kaiser girls basketball team’s accomplishment. The Cats ended defending CIF champion Summit’s 63-game win streak in the Sunkist League. In fact, Summit had never lost a league game until this season.

Accordingly, it’s not surprising that Kaiser team swept the All-Sunkist League awards. It’s hard to say enough about the feats Kaiser pulled off in 2012-13, but this list is a start.

MVP – Aliyah Dodson, Kaiser
Coach of the Year – Denise Sinohui, Kaiser

Colony guard’s late-season push drawing eye of college scouts

There was a specific point this season at which Colony guard Everett Turner began to draw the eye of more college scouts, something he hopes will continue at a high-profile showcase on Saturday. Colony will take on Mission Viejo at noon in the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei High School, where the senior hopes to continue a tear that began following the Titans loss to Mt. Baldy League rival Montclair Jan. 4.

The 6-foot-2 combo guard is averaging 27.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and four steals since Jan. 4. The streak includes a 41-point game and 22 points, 11 rebounds and six assists in a rematch win over Montclair on Jan. 18.

Death of his father prompts Chino Hills head football coach to resign

As soon as his father died unexpectedly in October, Chino Hills coach Derek Bub knew he didn’t want his children to feel the same things he did. Bub finished out his fifth season as head football coach at Chino Hills High School, but resigned from the position Tuesday night in order to spend more time with his family.

“When my father passed away, I realized that I just needed to be a dad to my kids,” Bub said. “I take every Christmas break to think about whether I’m going to continue to coach. I was extremely close with my father and anytime something like this happens, it makes you see things differently.”

After 10 seasons, Tom Martinez ‘no longer the football coach at Los Osos’

Tom Martinez confirmed in an email Tuesday evening that he is no longer the head football coach at Los Osos High School. Coach since the school’s inception in 2002, Martinez led the Grizzlies to eight playoff appearances in 10 seasons, including a postseason berth in 2012. He will remain the athletic director at Los Osos.

He did not explain whether it was his decision to step down or he was removed from the head football coaching position. “I will focus all my efforts on the AD job here at Los Osos HS,” Martinez wrote in an email.
