Etiwanda High School’s search for a head football coach continues after former Damien coach Greg Gano withdrew his name from candidacy on Friday.

Gano, Damien’s head coach the last four seasons after stints at Covina Northview and Hacienda Heights Los Altos, has instead applied and interviewed for the head coaching job at Tustin. Gano was never offered the position at Etiwanda, according to Etiwanda athletic director David Masucci. The former Damien coach cited the lack of a teaching position at Etiwanda as his reason for withdrawing.

“Everything else was great because (Etiwanda) is even right by my house,” Gano said. “But without a teaching position, I just couldn’t afford it. So I interviewed for the Tustin position last week and I’m waiting to find out.”

It must have seemed like a lifetime between verbal commitments to Washington for Upland High School defensive end Joe Mathis, but Saturday afternoon the senior ended up back where he started 14 months ago. Mathis, a 6-foot-4, 255-pound, 4-star recruit, committed to Washington Oct. 28, 2011, one day after the Huskies joined Indiana to become his second scholarship offer. With what would eventually become more than 50 offers beginning to pile up, he de-committed three months later.

Live on NBC during the second quarter of Saturday’s U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, Mathis donned a Washington hat, choosing the Huskies from a final four that included USC, UCLA and Alabama. He was considering Texas A&M before removing the Aggies from the list earlier in the week.

Craig Lee won’t arrive at UCLA until next season, but the Redlands High School running back has already faced plenty of college-caliber talent this year.

Thursday night the Terriers took on a defending CIF champion Summit defense with eight returning starters that included multiple Division I prospects, but Lee couldn’t be contained for the second consecutive week as he churned out 148 rushing yards and two touchdowns in a 21-12 victory at Miller High School.

After Lee was held to 80 yards on 20 carries in a season-opening blowout loss to the CIF-SS Inland Division’s No. 2 team last week, Redlands bounced back by pulling away from the defending Eastern Division champions in the second half thanks in large part to its UCLA-committed running back and a stout defensive effort. Rancho Cucamonga, which features at least four defensive players with multiple scholarship offers, handed Redlands a 40-17 loss last week but Terriers coach Jim Walker knew his team gave the Cougars plenty of assists.
