VIDEO: Arroyo Valley/Indian Springs highlights and my take

Above are highlights for the game, an 80-19 win by Arroyo Valley girls basketball over Indian Springs in a San Andreas League opener.
There are some things you’ll notice in the video. While the game was at Indian Springs and there was a decent home crowd, I heard no boos pregame or during the game. No reaction of any kind really toward Arroyo Valley from Indian Springs fans. In fact, the small group of Arroyo Valley fans (I’m guessing mostly parents), were vocal in showing their support for their team.
I saw no indication that people there were aware that in Arroyo Valley’s last game, on Jan. 5 vs. Bloomington, the Hawks won by a 161-2 score.
I’m sure Arroyo Valley and Bloomington would both like to move beyond the 161-2 game. Wednesday’s game was an important step in that direction.

VIDEO: Acting head coach Nick Anderson talks + my take

With Arroyo Valley girls basketball coach Michael Anderson suspended for 2 games in the wake of last week’s 161-2 win over Bloomington, his son, 19-year-old Nick Anderson is the acting head coach.
I have several thoughts on this. First, I think the 2 games was fair. He didn’t deserve to lose his job. But I think a short suspension is warranted. No rules were broken, but the sportsmanship line was crossed. I have no problem with 2 games.

Second, is this kid really 19, only 2 years removed from high school? He is, and while he wasn’t really put to the test on Wednesday, I have the feeling he’s going to be one hell of a coach someday. He handles himself with the media well and he knows his father’s system. Impressive.

Arroyo Valley 161, Bloomington 2: my take

Above, Arroyo Valley coach Michael Anderson coaches in a game last year.

The score was outrageous: a typo perhaps. On Monday, the Arroyo Valley High girls varsity basketball team defeated Bloomington 161-2 in a game that was 104-1 at halftime.

Read my story I wrote today about it.

I know Arroyo Valley coach Michael Anderson fairly well, and have known him for several years now. I will believe him when he says he wasn’t trying to embarrass anybody.

But, he didn’t take care enough to make sure that didn’t happen. He knew how lopsided it would be and he needed to keep an eye on the scoreboard to make sure it didn’t get to a 161-2. You can’t make Bloomington score, but you can keep your own score down.

I realize it’s tough when you have a pressure-style defense and the other team has trouble handling the ball. But surely you can work on your passing, something so you don’t score 161 points, especially 104 in the first half. Does Bloomington need to get better? Sure. But with only one player who had ever played basketball before, there was little chance the game would be competitive.

Ironically, it was about 20 years ago when Don Markham took over the Bloomington football program en route to winning CIF and set all kind of scoring records. I remember the first score I saw that I thought was a typo: 86-8 over Big Bear. It took some time for the running clock rules to change in football. In this day and age, I don’t think  you’ll see more 161-2 scores out of Arroyo Valley, or if you do, you won’t see Anderson coaching there any more.

Arroyo Valley High hosting a MLK Day basketball event

Arroyo Valley girls coach Michael Anderson, above, in a game last year

There have been a flurry of one-day basketball events in recent years, and now you can add one at Arroyo Valley to the list.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 19, Arroyo Valley will host a full slate of games for the Dr. Martin Luther King Basketball Classic, all but one of which are girls games.
The schedule begins with a pair of girls junior varsity games at 8 a.m. The varsity schedule begins with Ganesha vs. Claremont at 11 a.m., Perris vs. Rubidoux at 12:30 p.m,, Corona Santiago vs. Bloomington Christian at 2 p.m., and Fontana vs. Riverside King at 3:30 p.m. The lone boys game is Arroyo Valley vs. Fontana at 5 p.m., and is followed by two more girls games: Arroyo Valley vs. former league rival San Bernardino at 6:30, and Barstow vs. Colony at 8 p.m.
The event is organized by Arroyo Valley girls coach Michael Anderson, who has been trying to make Arroyo Valley known for girls basketball since he took over the program about a year and a half ago.
