Serrano getting back to normal after Wrightwood fires

The fires in the Wrightwood area over the weekend, which caused the mandatory evacuation of Wrightwood Sunday, has caused Serrano High School to make some adjustments to its schedule this week.

The school postponed a girls tennis match and a volleyball match with Rim of the World, scheduled for Monday, for October 27, as Diamondback students from the Wrightwood area scattered all over the High Desert and Inland Empire as a result of the fires.

The football team, which has its bye week this week, cancelled practice Monday and had an outside practice Tuesday after the air had cleared, but was missing some of the kids displaced by the fires.

“(Wednesday) is the first practice we expect to have everyone,” Serrano football coach and athletic director Ray Maholchic said. “The air out here is fine — the main issue is getting the Wrightwood kids back here and getting them rides to practice. That’s been the main effect as far as the football team is concerned.”

Maholchic did indicate that houses in Wrightwood were spared by the fires, which should help the process of returning to the everyday school routine.
