UCLA and USC offer Redlands East Valley LB Jaelan Phillips

UPDATED: After being offered by the USC Trojans the morning of Sept. 19, Redlands East Valley junior linebacker Jaelan Phillips confirmed that he has now been offered by the UCLA Bruins.

It is his fourth offer this week and the fourth of his five offers to come from a Pac-12 program.

“It has honestly been surreal…it is a dream come true in every sense of the phrase. Like I said before I am just honored and blessed to receive these offers especially from schools that are so highly esteemed,” he said. “It is a feeling like no other to be able to choose where I want to play Division 1 football but for now I can just focus on the season ahead of me.”

While Phillips has not verbally committed to any program at the moment, he stated earlier this week that UCLA is his dream school.

“I have been a lifelong UCLA fan because my dad, grandpa and grandma went there,” he explained. “But I am really open minded and just honored to get any offers.”

With his parents on hand, the 3-star prospect stated that the moment was very special.

“It was definitely one of the best moments I’ve had with my parents,” he said. “We just looked at each other, shook our heads and smiled from cheek to cheek. It was a really strong moment.”

Not only can Phillips hold his own on the football field, but he maintains a 4.1 GPA in the classroom.

“When you take care of your academics, colleges aren’t afraid to offer you early,” said Kurt Bruich, REV head coach. “Jaelan is a great example of that. He has been blessed with a D1 body and athleticism, as so many are but his attention to detail in the classroom is what sets him apart.”

Bruich will be the first to tell you that he has seen growth on the field from Phillips, after participating in last year’s CIF State Championship run.

“Truthfully. He got lucky last year. He was the right man in the right spot in the state final. The rest of the year, he was like a new born calf that was growing into his body and feet,” Bruich explained. “This year, he’s getting it. He understands what his position is and his responsibilities.”

Only being a junior allows plenty of time for the linebacker to continue his process of development.

“Colleges see his size, frame and potential,” Bruich added. “The sky is the limit for this young man. I just hope he will continue to humble himself and grow.”

Redlands East Valley LB Jaelan Phillips receives offers from Colorado and Nebraska

Redlands East Valley junior linebacker Jaelan Phillips received two offers this week.

Phillips received an offer from both Colorado and Nebraska to compliment the offer he received this summer from Washington.

“It’s just really humbling and a true blessing to have the opportunity to play Division 1 football especially from such prestigious programs,” Phillips said.

While he has interest from Pac-12 programs, such as Colorado and Washington, the linebacker does have a dream school in mind that happens to be within the conference.

“I have been a lifelong UCLA fan because my dad, grandpa and grandma went there,” he explained. “But I am really open minded and just honored to get any offers.”

With the experience from last year’s CIF State Championship season, Phillips knows he still has time to improve on the fundamentals of the game.

“One of my main problems is playing to high,” he said. “I am constantly working to get lower and making sure I just play 100 percent and stay true to our defensive scheme.”

REV coach Kurt Bruich glad to be closer to home

Redlands East Valley is used to going on the road. After all, the Wildcats are one of the few large schools in the county without their own stadium on campus, but coach Kurt Bruich is glad the long road trips are behind them, at least until the playoffs.

This week, REV is hitting the road for the third straight week to start the season, but Bruich is looking forward to a more reasonable road trip to Moreno Valley Rancho Verde after trips to West Hills and Ventura the first two weeks.
“We didn’t get back to the school until after midnight, and I’m not getting home until 2 or 3,” Bruich said. “We’re ecstatic it’s only 35 miles.”
REV will play its first “home” game next week in the Citrus Belt League opener against Carter at Citrus Valley High.

After beating REV, Rim girls volleyball ready for Durango Classic

Many of the top girls volleyball teams in the CIF Southern Section will be in Las Vegas this weekend for the 64-team Durango Fall Classic, which will be held at four high schools.
TX Body: And several of the top teams from San Bernardino County will be there, including preseason Sun Top 10 teams Redlands East Valley, Chino Hills and Rim of the World. Los Osos is a fourth county team in the tournament.
“I’m interested to see how we compete against bigger schools.” Rim coach Linda Pattison said.
All three of the county ranked teams, could end up facing each other if the seedings hold.
All three are seeded third in their four-team pool, so if they all went 1-2 in their pools on Friday they’d have a chance to play each other in Classic qualifying round Saturday morning or in the Classic Division Bracket or Contenter Division Bracket later on Saturday.
Rim is the highest seeded of the four county teams, seeded 40th overall, followed by REV (43rd), Chino Hills (47th) and Los Osos (57th). Los Osos is seeded fourth in its pool.
Pattison said Rim’s 14-25, 20-25, 25-16, 25-21, 15-12 win last week over REV improved the Scots’ seeding for the tournament.
“It moved us up more than it moved them down,” she said.
Rim’s win also did a lot for her team beyond tournament seeding.
“REV’s a good team and it shows we’re capable of beating a team like that,” she said.
In the match, Pattison said middle blocker Tia MacGuire, who Pattison did not expect to play due to an ankle injury, provided a big lift by playing in Sets 3, 4 and 5. They also had regular standouts Maddie Newcombe and Chloe Castillo (17 kills).
Rim usually schedules a tough preseason, so beating REV could help Rim in this tournament, in REV’s tournament Oct. 17 or in the CIF-SS playoffs.
Rim will play Honolulu ‘Iolani, Vista Murrieta and Los Osos in pool play on Friday.

REV’s Victoria Bustamante lands softball offer

Football is no longer the only program at Redlands East Valley to have a player receive a scholarship offer this week as softball player Victoria Bustamante has stated that she received an offer from La Sierra University.

“This opportunity doesn’t happen too often to girls just finishing their sophomore year,”  Bustamante said. “I am very flattered with this opportunity.”

While Bustamante is happy about the offer, she plans to keep her mind focused on her junior and senior seasons at REV.

“First of all I would like to thank God without him none of this would be possible,” she said. “But I have to stay focused on the upcoming year especially with my grades, school and just having fun with my softball teammates.”

Bustamante stated that the Golden Eagles became interested in her after watching her play with her travel ball team, the Orange County Batbusters.

REV will look to build off a 14-8 overall season where the Wildcats took third in the Citrus Belt League behind Yucaipa and Citrus Valley.
