VIDEO: Azusa Pacific scrimmages at San Gorgonio

I talked to some San Gorgonio players (I didn’t do video because music was playing) who watched Azusa Pacific’s scrimmage held at San G. and they were very impressed, as you can read in my story about the scrimmage.

Think about it. NCAA Division II football in Southern California wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for APU. The next closest Div. II school in California is Humboldt State, which if you know where that is, isn’t that close at all.

This is the 3rd straight year scrimmaging in the Inland Empire and coach Victor Santa Cruz thinks it really helps in recruiting.

San Gorgonio High hosting Azusa Pacific football next week

Interested in what NCAA Division II football is about but you don’t want to leave San Bernardino County?
Then San Gorgonio is the place to be, Aug. 20 at 6 p.m.

San Gorgonio logoThe Spartans’ stadium will be the site of an Azusa Pacific University football scrimmage at that time. Yes, UCLA football has been practicing in San Bernardino, but playing for the Bruins is not a attainable reality for 99 percent of high school football players.
Division II Azusa Pacific, however, is more attainable. Coach Ron Gueringer sees many advantages to the event. APU was looking to showcase their football team outside of their home in Azusa, and Gueringer not only wants people to see the school’s quality athletic facilities, but also show them another option for college.
“We’ve had a good relationship with those guys for a few years and they were looking for a place to go,” Gueringer said. “It’s a great opportunity for our kids to see college football.”

San Gorgonio baseball coach Bill Eatinger named to Hall of Fame

San Gorgonio baseball coach Bill Eatinger talks about beating Jurupa Hills earlier this season.

Hall of Fame? Bill Eatinger never thought his name would be mentioned in the same sentence.
But the long-time San Gorgonio High baseball coach has been inducted into the California Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
“I’m shocked anybody knows San Gorgonio,” Eatinger said. “It seems they do.”
Eatinger, a head coach for 24 years including the last 19 at San Gorgonio, got some support from a veteran coach, former Redlands East Valley coach Steve Hernandez.
“Steve Hernandez nominated me and that was quite a nomination,” Eatinger said.
Eatinger was told what some of the factors were in his nomination.
“According to Steve, it was just coaching in a bankrupt city and being able to be successful with kids who don’t get drafted,” Eatinger said. “We still managed to raise funds, we’re able to travel and compete against some pretty good teams. And this year (when they went to the CIF-SS quarterfinals), we only had an 11-man team.”

San Gorgonio’s Wesley Hill flips college choice to Fresno State

Uploaded 8-12-14 033

It’s amazing that it took this long for San Gorgonio’s Wesley Hill (who just graduated this spring) to get a concrete offer. Now he’s had a second, and changed his commitment. Congrats to him.
Initially, he appeared to find his college home, making a verbal commitment to Texas-El Paso less than three weeks ago.
Apparently as soon as that happened, Fresno State increased its pursuit of Hill and now Hill has changed his mind and will be going to Fresno State.
“I think that (Fresno State) is really where he wanted to go,” San Gorgonio coach Ron Gueringer said. “And I think part of it is that UTEP wanted him to play linebacker. Fresno State wants him to play running back, which is what he wants to do.”
UNLV, Montana state and Washington State were among the schools that had been talking to Hill.
Last year, Hill rushed for 760 yards and nine touchdowns, while also catching 12 passes and scoring three more touchdowns.
On defense, he had 52 total tackles, including 10 for loss and had three sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery.

San Gorgonio’s Wesley Hill signing with UTEP

Uploaded 8-12-14 033 San Gorgonio’s Wesley Hill

It’s better late than never for San Gorgonio linebacker/running back Wesley Hill, who committed to UTEP and is expected to sign his National Letter of Intent this week after officially getting his scholarship offer to UTEP.
“I thought I was going to have to go the junior college route,” said Hill. “I didn’t think they had the (scholarship) money to give me.”
San Gorgonio coach Ron Gueringer said that Hill would’ve signed much earlier but did not get a qualifying test score until after National Signing Day in February.
“We had some different schools go back and forth, but it was about finding the (scholarship) money. A lot of people were already filled up,” Gueringer said.
Gueringer said that Fresno State, UNLV, Montana State, and Washington State were all talking to Hill, but that at this point, it’s frequently about who makes the first offer and UTEP won that battle.
Hill said that UTEP first started talking to him about a month ago, but it wasn’t until Tuesday that they gave him the official word they had scholarship money for him.
“I’m more diligent than most,” Gueringer said. “No is never an answer I readily accept. We are saying, ‘if you get it (academically) done, we’re going to do our due diligence.'”
Gueringer said while Hill played running back and linebacker at San Gorgonio, he promoted him as a safety for college.
“He wasn’t big enough to play inside linebacker,” Gueringer said. “(But) he’s agile, he’s fast and he has the ability to play in the box.”
Hill said there are several keys to staying positive while trying to be recruited late.
“Keep your head up high, and have a great connection with your coach. Every time talking to a (college) coach, do it,” Hill said.
Last year, Hill rushed for 760 yards and nine touchdowns, while also catching 12 passes and scoring three more touchdowns.
On defense, he had 52 total tackles, including 10 for loss and had three sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery.

Maeda Family Civil War: 2 daughters, 1 dad, 2 schools, 1 game

IMG_3804

How’s this for a family photo? It’s the Maeda Family Civil War, so dubbed by San Gorgonio athletic director Matt Maeda, center. His daughter on the left is Kaylee, who is a Redlands East Valley (2011) grad and a girls water polo coach at San Gorgonio. On the right is Melanie, who is a senior at Citrus Valley.

This photo was taken on Thursday, when Melanie’s Citrus Valley’s team beat Matt and Kaylee’s San Gorgonio team, 12-2. Notice the San G had and Citrus Valley shirt for Matt. This is the first time his kids have faced each other. In the past, there have been Maeda Civil Wars, but it was Matt’s San Gorgonio against his kid’s team. His son Kevin ran at Citrus Valley, graduating last year.
