Rancho Cucamonga-Centennial wrestling ugliness

Above, part of the ugliness following the 220-pound championship match between Corona Centennial’s David VanWeems and Rancho Cucamonga’s Cody Fahamokioa at Tuesday’s Upland Blackwatch Tournament. I have been told that www.TheCaliforniaWrestler.com will also have some videos up BlackWatch finals, but I haven’t seen them yet.
Now, I didn’t start recording the above video until after it started.
I’ve been at high school events where you can anticipate something bad happening, a fight about to break out. This got surprisingly out of hand quickly.
Centennial coaches weren’t happy with the referee in the match, but their ire didn’t seem to involve Fahamokioa. They wanted the ref to call stalling, which he eventually did to force overtime. They didn’t like that the ref stopped the match when VanWeems got a takedown in overtime, denying VanWeems at a chance at a pin, and more team points.
Somehow, before this video was shot, I saw another Rancho Cucamonga wrestler (not Fahamokioa) come halfway towards the Centennial coaches immediately after the match and yelling at them. That didn’t go over well.
Then fans started yelling from the stands, someone who appeared to be a Rancho Cucamonga fan (you see her in the video), shoved a Centennial coach.
It was one of those situations where an incident could’ve been avoided, but people kept acting in a way to make the situation worse.
The police were called. No arrests were made and calm was restored. But I don’t think Centennial and Rancho Cucamonga are scheduling any dual meets anytime soon.

CIF picks Ontario again, this time for wrestling

The CIF found Ontario a few years ago, and is now coming back more and more.

The CIF-SS announced this week that the Southern Section Masters wrestling meet is coming to Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Feb. 28-March 1, 2014. And it’s not for just one year. The commitment is for three years.

I think it’s a great move for CIF and for Ontario. The CIF-SS came to Ontario a few years ago, when they started having small-division basketball finals at Colony High School, which they still do. Then the state CIF brought regional final basketball games to CBB Arena a couple of years ago.

Bloomington’s Derrick Jones wins CIF State Championship

Video above is of Bloomington’s Derrick Jones winning a state title.

They were both 1 vs. 2 matchups, and according to the rankings, they were both upsets.

No. 2-ranked Derrick Jones of Bloomington, a junior, pinned No. 1 senior Sean Medley of Wasco in 47 seconds to win the 220-pound state title on Saturday in Bakersfield. It was the first-ever matchup between the two. Jones said he wanted to win the “Champion of Champions” award, as voted on by other state champions. But that award went  to Isaiah Martinez of Lemoore, the 160-pound champion.

It marked the third straight year San Bernardino County produced a state champion.

Before that, No. 2 Peter Santos of Oakmont, a senior, edged out No. 1 junior Corey Griego of Sultana 4-3 to win the 170-pound title. It was the third meeting of the year between them, with the first two being split.  They had also met “five or six times” total, including preseason tournaments.

Griego’s teammate, 182-pounder Matt Williams, took fifth in his weight class.

The other two wrestlers from the county who made it to Day 2, Chino Hills’ Garrick Gurney and Los Osos’ Jon Solano, lost their first matches and were eliminated.
