VIDEO: Arroyo Valley/Indian Springs highlights and my take

Above are highlights for the game, an 80-19 win by Arroyo Valley girls basketball over Indian Springs in a San Andreas League opener.
There are some things you’ll notice in the video. While the game was at Indian Springs and there was a decent home crowd, I heard no boos pregame or during the game. No reaction of any kind really toward Arroyo Valley from Indian Springs fans. In fact, the small group of Arroyo Valley fans (I’m guessing mostly parents), were vocal in showing their support for their team.
I saw no indication that people there were aware that in Arroyo Valley’s last game, on Jan. 5 vs. Bloomington, the Hawks won by a 161-2 score.
I’m sure Arroyo Valley and Bloomington would both like to move beyond the 161-2 game. Wednesday’s game was an important step in that direction.

VIDEO: Acting head coach Nick Anderson talks + my take

With Arroyo Valley girls basketball coach Michael Anderson suspended for 2 games in the wake of last week’s 161-2 win over Bloomington, his son, 19-year-old Nick Anderson is the acting head coach.
I have several thoughts on this. First, I think the 2 games was fair. He didn’t deserve to lose his job. But I think a short suspension is warranted. No rules were broken, but the sportsmanship line was crossed. I have no problem with 2 games.

Second, is this kid really 19, only 2 years removed from high school? He is, and while he wasn’t really put to the test on Wednesday, I have the feeling he’s going to be one hell of a coach someday. He handles himself with the media well and he knows his father’s system. Impressive.

Arroyo Valley girls coach Michael Anderson, above, in a game last year

There have been a flurry of one-day basketball events in recent years, and now you can add one at Arroyo Valley to the list.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 19, Arroyo Valley will host a full slate of games for the Dr. Martin Luther King Basketball Classic, all but one of which are girls games.
The schedule begins with a pair of girls junior varsity games at 8 a.m. The varsity schedule begins with Ganesha vs. Claremont at 11 a.m., Perris vs. Rubidoux at 12:30 p.m,, Corona Santiago vs. Bloomington Christian at 2 p.m., and Fontana vs. Riverside King at 3:30 p.m. The lone boys game is Arroyo Valley vs. Fontana at 5 p.m., and is followed by two more girls games: Arroyo Valley vs. former league rival San Bernardino at 6:30, and Barstow vs. Colony at 8 p.m.
The event is organized by Arroyo Valley girls coach Michael Anderson, who has been trying to make Arroyo Valley known for girls basketball since he took over the program about a year and a half ago.

Arroyo Valley girls basketball rallies after death of coach’s mother

photo (10)Valerie Anderson

As we’re still finishing up with football and other fall sports, we haven’t done much with winter sports yet.
But this one deserves some mention now.
Arroyo Valley girls basketball coach Michael Anderson’s mother, Valerie Anderson, passed away two days before Thanksgiving at the age of 60.
You may remember that Anderson stepped down as coach of Rialto after the 2012-13 season because his mother had a stroke and he needed to be her caregiver. He took the job at Arroyo Valley because it was close enough to his home in San Bernardino.
Anderson says he feels the support of his team, which is off to a 4-1 start to the season.
“It was hard to bail out on them (players). We use it as a motivational tool. They all had an opportunity to know how her after I left Rialto. They saw her around in a wheelchair and me being her caregiver,” Anderson said.

Michael Anderson, now at Arroyo Valley, set for Rialto return

Michael Anderson doesn’t know what kind of reception he’ll get, but he’s glad to get it out of the way early.
Anderson, who coached Rialto High girls basketball for 5 years, winning a CIF-SS title in 2011 and also becoming a state finalist that year, is now at Arroyo Valley. His first game back to Rialto is Thursday at 6 p.m.
He has some friends still at Rialto, but many administrators are no longer at the school from when Anderson started there. He knows some Rialto players and parents were upset when he left last season, to be closer to home where he can tend to his mother. It got worse when he took the job at Arroyo Valley, but that being closer to home made it a better fit.
“I’m glad it’s early, to get it out of the way,” Anderson said. “It (reaction) is going to be mixed.”
He doesn’t know what kind of a reception he will get, or if Rialto will try and get a big rowdy crowd to come in response to Anderson’s return. Having the first game between the teams at Rialto (instead of Arroyo Valley) helps Anderson. “So I can see what they do first,” he said.
He said he heard that Rialto covered up some banners or references to his CIF-SS championship team, but also said that could be part of a gym refurbishment.
His Arroyo Valleyteam  is 8-8 after losing its league opener on Tuesday to Carter and received two big blows, as Claudia Orantes tore her knee against Carter and is out for the year. In addition, junior Tamara Trigg, who was transferring  from Rialto to Arroyo Valley, was ruled out for the year by CIF-SS. Rialto is 2-9 after losing its league opener on Tuesday to San Gorgonio.

Arroyo Valley looking for new boys basketball coach

The search is underway at Arroyo Valley for a new boys basketball  coach after coach Gerry Wright has taken a job as the head coach at Barstow College.

The hiring was mentioned by San Bernardino Valley College’s athletics twitter account and also confirmed by Arroyo Valley athletic director Matt Howell. Wright was also previously the head coach at SBVC.

According to maxpreps.com, Wright was the head coach at Arroyo Valley the last four years, leading the Hawks to no league titles, but reaching the playoffs in each of the four years. He was only the second coach in school history, succeeding Scott Smith.

Howell said they are in the process of hiring Wright’s replacement.

Michael Anderson, who led Rialto High School’s girls basketball program to prominence in his five years as head coach, is the new head coach at Arroyo Valley he said.

Anderson built a 123-21 record in five years, winning at CIF-SS title in 2011 and was runner-up in the state that year. He stepped down after last season to spend time with his mother, who had suffered a stroke.

His mother lives with him, from where he can “walk to Arroyo Valley.”

Anderson said he talked to seven different schools after last season, but “Arroyo Valley was my first choice all along.”

Anderson takes over an Arroyo Valley program that went 6-20 last season and was blown out by Anderson’s Rialto squad by an average of 64 points in two San Andreas League games.

Arroyo Valley’s Maurice McKnight changes commitment

Arroyo Valley’s Maurice McKnight, a quarterback and a running back who was an all-league selection last year for the Hawks, has changed his college commitment, coach Tony DiThomas reports.

McKnight had originally committed to San Diego State, but has since switched to San Jose State.

“It has to do with the system they run,” DiThomas said.
