San Gorgonio athlete Nate Meadors had a home visit from Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly.

Meadors, who played quarterback for the Spartans this season, is being recruited as a defensive back.
He entered 2014 without a single offer, but closed out the year with 14 offers, including Notre Dame, UCLA and Oregon.
Kelly was not the first coach that Meadors welcomed into his home. UCLA coach Jim Mora took a small trip to visit Meadors on Jan. 22.

He also played in the Inland Empire vs. Orange Country All-Star Game as an offensive player.
The Notre Dame football program seems to have its eye on San Bernardino County talent.
It was just last week that a member of the program has taken a visit to Carter High School to follow up with Lokeni Toailoa for the fifth time since offering him a scholarship.

Oregon Ducks football offered San Gorgonio’s Nate Meadors

Right when things appeared to be quiet regarding the recruiting process of San Gorgonio athlete Nate Meadors, he has received his 14th scholarship offer in 2014 to play football for the Oregon Ducks.

The offer from the Ducks was received less than a week removed from a visit to Cal, his second official visit of the year.t

The half of Meadors offers are from Pac-12 football programs, including UCLA and Oregon State.

Meadors is set to take a trip to Oregon in Jan. 16, with his final official visit already scheduled with UCLA on Jan. 23.

“It is amazing to be recognized by the No. 2 team in the country,” Meadors said. “It is surreal and I am just thankful for it all.”

Thoughts on Jurupa Hills’ football win over Rim

There were a few things I wanted to mention, following up from Friday night’s Jurupa Hills 31-21 victory over Rim of the World in a Mountain Valley League showdown.

  • At the least, it should move No. 3 Jurupa Hills past No. 2 Rim in the East Valley Division rankings.
  • The size of the crowd there was a little disappointing to me, although it was not homecoming, nor was it senior night. Perhaps as the newest school in town, Jurupa Hills has trouble growing a fan base especially with perennial power Kaiser also in South Fontana. I understand why coach Ed McMillon is trying to convince people in the community to watch his team play. They are exciting and good and they should get some more support.
  • Jurupa Hills had a ridiculous number of penalties, which will need to be corrected if the Spartans want to win a CIF title. By my count, Jurupa Hills had 15 penalties for 140 yards. Rim? They had just three for 20 yards.
  • Jurupa Hills’ defense was very impressive, including senior linebacker Deshire Singleton, as well as Nick Navarro, who had his second pick-6 in the last two weeks (a fact I failed to mention in the story). When you hold Rim to 225 yards rushing on 51 carries as a team and intercept them 3 times, you’re doing something right.
  • The Jurupa Hills offense stagnated at times, but then showed the ability to break open at any given time.
  • One thing I did mention in the story, but bears repeating: Neither of these teams won league last year, but both made at least the CIF-SS semifinals. Rim could still make a playoff run like it did despite losing twice in league last year.
  • Can these teams face each other again? It’s possible. But if Jurupa Hills wins out, they will get the No. 2 seed (assuming No. 1 St. Margaret’s wins out). If, as a result, Rim gets the league’s second entry into the playoffs, Rim would have to be on the other half of the bracket from Jurupa Hills and could be no better than a 4 seed. Last year, there were two Mountain Valley League rematches in the playoffs: and both times the team that lost in league, won in the playoffs: Jurupa Hills beating Citrus Valley in the second round, and Rim beating Banning in the semifinals.

A look back at Serrano-Oak Hills football

I love games where there’s a lot of extra stuff to talk about afterwards.

Oak Hills- Serrano had stuff that was fun to talk about, but also had plenty of stuff you hate to have to talk about.

First, the fun stuff:

  • Great crowd at Oak Hills on both sides. It was THE game in the High Desert on Friday and fans from all over brought a great atmosphere.
  • Serrano’s win was well-deserved with a defense that has been solid all year.
  • What is the fallout of the game? I haven’t seen newest CIF-SS football polls, but I know San Gorgonio is very interested. San G. should be the new No. 1 in the Eastern Division. Oak Hills was No. 1, San G. No. 2 and San G. is the only remaining undefeated team in the division. San G. will likely need to remain undefeated to earn the No. 1 seed for the playoffs.

Now, the not-so-fun stuff:

  • Oak Hills star RB De Zhontaey Flecher was injured on the first play from scrimmage with an apparent season-ending ankle injury. It was a blow to Oak Hills, certainly, but also affected Serrano. The Diamondbacks’ victory will be discounted by some because Oak Hills was missing its biggest offensive weapon. But Serrano still deserved to win. After the injury, Oak Hills rallied to take the lead, only to see Serrano rally for the win.
  • Penalties, penalties, penalties. Each team had over 100 yards in penalties. I spent a half on each sideline, and I can tell you neither coach was happy with the officiating. The call that drew particular ire of Oak Hills coach Robert Kistner was an unsportsmanlike conduct call that went against his team in the fourth quarter. The player had just recorded a sack that (I believe) would’ve ended a Serrano drive. He celebrated, but officials thought it was taunting. It did not appear so to this observer. The drive continued and while Serrano didn’t score on the drive, it limited the time Oak Hills had to try and score in the final minutes.
