Yucaipa’s Jared Davila finally makes his season debut

Yucaipa’s Jared Davila, one of the top returning pitchers in the area, finally made his season debut on Tuesday after a lengthy rehabilitation from an elbow injury.
Davila pitched a shutout inning of relief on Tuesday in a win vs. Citrus Valley, allowing one hit and striking out one.
“He’s finally getting in there,” Yucaipa coach Jeff Stout said. “He’s probably 85-90 percent. His velocity is in the low-mid 80s.”
A year ago, Davila went 7-1 with a 0.97 ERA in 12 appearances including 10 starts. Stout said that Davila will be limited to an inning or two out of the bullpen, partially because Yucaipa is deep with pitching.

Redlands East Valley’s David Barela needs Tommy John surgery

REV left-hander David Barela pitching against Los Osos in the playoffs last year.

Redlands East Valley senior left-hander David Barela, a second-team all-Sun selection last season and who has signed a National Letter of Intent with New Mexico State, will undergo Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery on Friday, coach James Cordes said.
Barela went 8-1 with a 0.78 ERA last year and entered the season with 14 career wins, just seven away from the school career record. He threw for REV “only about 14 innings” in the fall because REV was looking at other pitchers.
When they returned from winter break in January, Barela’s arm didn’t feel right. It took a while for him to get insurance approval for an MRI, and in the meantime Barela didn’t pitch at all. They got the results of the MRI back a couple of weeks ago and Cordes said the results indicated that surgery and not rehab, was necessary.
Cordes said that New Mexico State still wants Barela and will likely redshirt him next year.
“It certainly bumps everyone up on the pitching chain. That’s why you work hard to develop eight or nine pitchers. On a personal note, it’s devastating for David,” Cordes said.

REV baseball to host team from South Korea

REV senior David Barela, above, pitches last year

Redlands East Valley will get a taste for international baseball when it plays an exhibition against the best team from Seoul, South Korea.
REV’s game against Yatap High School is set for Thursday and will serve as the final game of a nine-game, 40-day tour of California by the South Korean team, made up of players from ages 16 to 18. It will be the third San Bernardino County team that Yatap has played.
Yatap is the official guest of the San Bernardino-based American Sports University and is making its second straight tour of Southern California. On Friday, Yatap swept a doubleheader from Carter, winning 6-1 and 14-6.
“We wanted to do this for a lot of reasons,” REV coach James Cordes said. “First, it’s because of the high level of baseball we will see and we want to see any differences in the game they have. And just to get the cultural experience on baseball from a team that is a world away from us. We will field teams, but how great will it be just to experience the cultural exchange.”
Yatap has posted wins over San Bernardino (3-0) and Carter. It has also played Thousand Oaks, Mission Hills Alemany, Arcadia, Placentia Valencia and Beaumont.
Today, Yatap plays at Placentia Valencia and at Beaumont on Tuesday.
“My guess is that we will see mistake-free baseball, high on the fundamentals,” Cordes said. “The game will move pretty quickly for them. It’s going to be fun for us to play at a level that is pretty high.”
Yatap made its Southern California debut during last year’s tour through the Los Angeles area. In 2011, the Oakland A’s signed Yatap catcher Seong-Min Kim, who played for the A’s farm team in the New York-Penn League last season.
