Jaelan Phillips will play vs Citrus Valley

He tried to get back into the football game last week, but it looks like he’ll be back in this week.
Redlands East Valley High School standout defensive end/linebacker Jaelan Phillips, a UCLA commit, broke his hand early in the second half of last week’s 38-32 win over Cajon and tried to go back in.
“It was friendly fire, a helmet on his hand,” REV coach Kurt Bruich said. “He wanted to come back in, but they (medical staff) wouldn’t let him.”
Phillips, who lines up at several different spots on the field, would leave a hole if he wasn’t able to play.
“He has a backup, so we’d plug him in,” Bruick said. “It does eliminate some of the defenses we run, because of what Jaelan is able to do. But, if I was a betting man, I’d say he’s going to play.”
Bruich said that before practice. By the end of the day, he indicated that Phillips will play this week against Citrus Valley and Phillips sent out pictures on social media of his cast on his right hand.

REV’s Jaelan Phillips names Top 5

Redlands East Valley’s Jaelan Phillips announced that he has narrowed his list of 19 college offers down to five with the announcement of his top choice to follow tomorrow at noon.
Phillip’s Top 5 includes four schools from the PAC-12 (Washington, Stanford, UCLA and USC) and Notre Dame being the fifth.
UCLA has been a dream school for Phillips and a program that has drawn the interest of several Inland Empire athletes, especially the last few years.
It would be hard to rule out Stanford as a contender, a place Phillips could fit right in as a student-athlete seeing as how he holds a highly regarded grade point average at REV. Phillips made two trips to the University, one of which was for a junior day event on Feb. 27.
While five schools have reached the final round of the Phillips’ sweepstakes, it is the end of the road for some highly touted programs such as Alabama, LSU, Florida and Michigan.

UCLA and USC offer Redlands East Valley LB Jaelan Phillips

UPDATED: After being offered by the USC Trojans the morning of Sept. 19, Redlands East Valley junior linebacker Jaelan Phillips confirmed that he has now been offered by the UCLA Bruins.

It is his fourth offer this week and the fourth of his five offers to come from a Pac-12 program.

“It has honestly been surreal…it is a dream come true in every sense of the phrase. Like I said before I am just honored and blessed to receive these offers especially from schools that are so highly esteemed,” he said. “It is a feeling like no other to be able to choose where I want to play Division 1 football but for now I can just focus on the season ahead of me.”

While Phillips has not verbally committed to any program at the moment, he stated earlier this week that UCLA is his dream school.

“I have been a lifelong UCLA fan because my dad, grandpa and grandma went there,” he explained. “But I am really open minded and just honored to get any offers.”

With his parents on hand, the 3-star prospect stated that the moment was very special.

“It was definitely one of the best moments I’ve had with my parents,” he said. “We just looked at each other, shook our heads and smiled from cheek to cheek. It was a really strong moment.”

Not only can Phillips hold his own on the football field, but he maintains a 4.1 GPA in the classroom.

“When you take care of your academics, colleges aren’t afraid to offer you early,” said Kurt Bruich, REV head coach. “Jaelan is a great example of that. He has been blessed with a D1 body and athleticism, as so many are but his attention to detail in the classroom is what sets him apart.”

Bruich will be the first to tell you that he has seen growth on the field from Phillips, after participating in last year’s CIF State Championship run.

“Truthfully. He got lucky last year. He was the right man in the right spot in the state final. The rest of the year, he was like a new born calf that was growing into his body and feet,” Bruich explained. “This year, he’s getting it. He understands what his position is and his responsibilities.”

Only being a junior allows plenty of time for the linebacker to continue his process of development.

“Colleges see his size, frame and potential,” Bruich added. “The sky is the limit for this young man. I just hope he will continue to humble himself and grow.”

Redlands East Valley LB Jaelan Phillips receives offers from Colorado and Nebraska

Redlands East Valley junior linebacker Jaelan Phillips received two offers this week.

Phillips received an offer from both Colorado and Nebraska to compliment the offer he received this summer from Washington.

“It’s just really humbling and a true blessing to have the opportunity to play Division 1 football especially from such prestigious programs,” Phillips said.

While he has interest from Pac-12 programs, such as Colorado and Washington, the linebacker does have a dream school in mind that happens to be within the conference.

“I have been a lifelong UCLA fan because my dad, grandpa and grandma went there,” he explained. “But I am really open minded and just honored to get any offers.”

With the experience from last year’s CIF State Championship season, Phillips knows he still has time to improve on the fundamentals of the game.

“One of my main problems is playing to high,” he said. “I am constantly working to get lower and making sure I just play 100 percent and stay true to our defensive scheme.”

Redlands East Valley players continue to land college football offers

Junior linebacker Jaelan Phillips became the second member from Redlands East Valley High School to receive an offer from the University of Washington.

It is the first offer Phillips, according to REV football coach Kurt Bruich when he shared the news on Twitter yesterday.

As reported earlier this week, REV’s Khris Vaughn was the other player to land an offer from Washington.

Senior defensive tackle Shynol McClain also received his first offer from Trinity International University.
