Citos Marinez makes sense as Jurupa Hills football coach

I had an interesting conversation with Citos Marinez, the soon-to-be-approved football coach at Jurupa Hills on Thursday.
Truthfully, there’s a good chance he wouldn’t have gotten the job without a previous coach-parent relationship with Jurupa Hills athletic director Kristen Braun.
And I don’t have a problem with that at all.
Braun’s son, Blake, played for Marinez when Marinez was an assistant coach at Redlands East Valley from 2004-12. Braun’s brother Kurt Bruich is also the head coach at REV.
Kristen Braun of course already knew him but could get truthful answers about him from her brother and her son, as well as her son’s friends.
In this era of coaches and administration not seeing eye-to-eye, it makes sense for an A.D. and coach to know each other previously. Obviously the A.D.-coach relationship is different than that of parent-coach, but you still have an idea of what he’s like working with kids and whether he knows football.
That weighed in his favor likely much more than the 7-23 record he compiled in three seasons as head coach at Covina Gladstone.
Both Marinez and Braun feel more comfortable I think about his hiring because of their history. She knows what she’s getting in a coach, and although he hasn’t worked for Braun, he knows her. It makes sense.

Ed McMillon steps down as Jurupa Hills football coach

Jurupa Hills is looking for its second head football coach in school history after Ed McMillon stepped down this week, a little more than a week after the Spartans were eliminated from the CIF-SS Inland Division playoffs in the first round.
“I think it was mutual. Maybe I overstayed a little bit,” McMillon said.

McMillon started the Jurupa Hills program, playing almost entirely a varsity schedule with just freshmen and sophomores in the Mountain Valley League in 2010, and compiled a 32-35 record in six seasons.
The high point was in 2013, when the Spartans won the Mountain Valley League and CIF-SS East Valley Division title. Jurupa Hills also made the playoffs each of the last four years McMillon was at the helm including the last two after moving to the San Andreas League.
“Of course winning CIF was big,” McMillon said. “But I’m proud of the fact that even though we didn’t have a lot of D1 kids, we’ve had kids go on and lead productive lives.”
McMillon said he didn’t necessarily see eye-to-eye with Jurupa Hills administration.
“I think we had a difference in philosophy, we weren’t on the same page,” he said.
McMillon, who had also served as an assistant at Miller and Carter and has already inquired about possible assistant coaching positions that might open up so he is not expecting to sit out the 2016 season.
“I definitely want to coach again,” he said. “I’m looking forward to the next opportunity.”

Jurupa Hills football might change its community day

Jurupa Hills held its second annual community day on Friday, but after Saturday, coach Ed McMillon said he might move the day. Why?

While there was some response again, with two school board members, Lorena Corona and Shannon O’Brien arriving to take pictures with players. Parents also arrived to take pictures with players on the field.

It was the team’s picture day, so it worked out well that the players were already in their uniforms. But team pictures ended early, and some of the players scattered by the time parents and community members arrived.

But on Saturday, for the team’s intrasquad scrimmage, McMillon was surprised.

Could Jurupa Hills-Citrus Valley softball this week be CIF-SS title game preview?

Jurupa Hills coach Scott Cartzdafner said he was “more than positive” his team would see Citrus Valley in the CIF-SS Division 5 championship game in three weeks.

He said that after his team lost to defending Division 6 champ Citrus Valley 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh to give Citrus Valley the Mountain Valley League title on Thursday. That was two days after Jurupa Hills knocked off Citrus Valley 3-2 on a walk-off two-run homer.

Citrus Valley is ranked No. 1 in the division and a favorite to get back to the CIF-SS title game. But what about Jurupa Hills? The Spartans were ranked fifth entering this week.

A year ago, Citrus Valley won its final 21 games en route to the CIF title. In the final 20 of those games, 2 of the 3 closest games were 3-2 and 4-1 wins over Jurupa Hills. The 4-1 win came in the CIF semifinals. Jurupa Hills might’ve been the second-best team in the division last year, but because the Spartans tied for 2nd in league and went into the playoffs as the No. 3 team, they could end up on the same side of the bracket as Citrus Valley, hence meet in the semifinals.

This year, since Jurupa HIlls is the No. 2 team in the league, the Spartans will be on the opposite half of the bracket from No. 1 Citrus Valley. So they could meet in the finals. But will they?
