REV football will be staying closer to home next year

Redlands East Valley will have new nonleague opponents next year and won’t have to travel far at least for a couple of them.
Coach Kurt Bruich said the Wildcats will play Upland and Etiwanda, and need to find a third opponent.
“We’re not scared of playing anybody. We’ve been trying to schedule Upland for years,” he said. “It finally worked out.”
This year, REV played road games against Chaminade, St. Bonaventure and Rancho Verde.

UCLA and USC offer Redlands East Valley LB Jaelan Phillips

UPDATED: After being offered by the USC Trojans the morning of Sept. 19, Redlands East Valley junior linebacker Jaelan Phillips confirmed that he has now been offered by the UCLA Bruins.

It is his fourth offer this week and the fourth of his five offers to come from a Pac-12 program.

“It has honestly been surreal…it is a dream come true in every sense of the phrase. Like I said before I am just honored and blessed to receive these offers especially from schools that are so highly esteemed,” he said. “It is a feeling like no other to be able to choose where I want to play Division 1 football but for now I can just focus on the season ahead of me.”

While Phillips has not verbally committed to any program at the moment, he stated earlier this week that UCLA is his dream school.

“I have been a lifelong UCLA fan because my dad, grandpa and grandma went there,” he explained. “But I am really open minded and just honored to get any offers.”

With his parents on hand, the 3-star prospect stated that the moment was very special.

“It was definitely one of the best moments I’ve had with my parents,” he said. “We just looked at each other, shook our heads and smiled from cheek to cheek. It was a really strong moment.”

Not only can Phillips hold his own on the football field, but he maintains a 4.1 GPA in the classroom.

“When you take care of your academics, colleges aren’t afraid to offer you early,” said Kurt Bruich, REV head coach. “Jaelan is a great example of that. He has been blessed with a D1 body and athleticism, as so many are but his attention to detail in the classroom is what sets him apart.”

Bruich will be the first to tell you that he has seen growth on the field from Phillips, after participating in last year’s CIF State Championship run.

“Truthfully. He got lucky last year. He was the right man in the right spot in the state final. The rest of the year, he was like a new born calf that was growing into his body and feet,” Bruich explained. “This year, he’s getting it. He understands what his position is and his responsibilities.”

Only being a junior allows plenty of time for the linebacker to continue his process of development.

“Colleges see his size, frame and potential,” Bruich added. “The sky is the limit for this young man. I just hope he will continue to humble himself and grow.”

VIDEOS: REV girls water polo reacts to 5 OT win vs Yucaipa

Maddy Wieseler, above, talks after scoring the winning goal in the fifth overtime. I’m surprised she was willing to stand for the interview after that exhausting game. She said she felt confident the Wildcats would win however long it took, but that may have been more a reflection on the team having already won 5 straight league titles before Tuesday than how the game was going.

REV coach Ryan Williams, above talks about beating Yucaipa. He was working the officials hard, especially in overtime, to get exclusions in a game that hardly had any. The game seemed physical, but not to the point where either team had any advantage.

REV baseball to host team from South Korea

REV senior David Barela, above, pitches last year

Redlands East Valley will get a taste for international baseball when it plays an exhibition against the best team from Seoul, South Korea.
REV’s game against Yatap High School is set for Thursday and will serve as the final game of a nine-game, 40-day tour of California by the South Korean team, made up of players from ages 16 to 18. It will be the third San Bernardino County team that Yatap has played.
Yatap is the official guest of the San Bernardino-based American Sports University and is making its second straight tour of Southern California. On Friday, Yatap swept a doubleheader from Carter, winning 6-1 and 14-6.
“We wanted to do this for a lot of reasons,” REV coach James Cordes said. “First, it’s because of the high level of baseball we will see and we want to see any differences in the game they have. And just to get the cultural experience on baseball from a team that is a world away from us. We will field teams, but how great will it be just to experience the cultural exchange.”
Yatap has posted wins over San Bernardino (3-0) and Carter. It has also played Thousand Oaks, Mission Hills Alemany, Arcadia, Placentia Valencia and Beaumont.
Today, Yatap plays at Placentia Valencia and at Beaumont on Tuesday.
“My guess is that we will see mistake-free baseball, high on the fundamentals,” Cordes said. “The game will move pretty quickly for them. It’s going to be fun for us to play at a level that is pretty high.”
Yatap made its Southern California debut during last year’s tour through the Los Angeles area. In 2011, the Oakland A’s signed Yatap catcher Seong-Min Kim, who played for the A’s farm team in the New York-Penn League last season.
