How/why Citrus Belt baseball tie is broken different than softball

Thursday, we learned the three-way tie for fourth place in the Citrus Belt League softball standings would be broken by runs allowed among the three teams, since Cajon, Redlands and Citrus Valley all went 1-1 against each other, and Redlands won that tiebreaker.

There will also be a tie in the Citrus Belt League baseball standings, but there are some big differences. It will only be two teams and it will either be a tie for first or second. And the tie will not be broken by runs allowed. Let me explain.

Going into today, Carter, Redlands East Valley and Yucaipa are in a three-way tie for first, Carter plays fourth-place Redlands and REV and Yucaipa play each other. If Carter wins, Carter ties with the REV-Yucaipa winner for first. If Carter loses, Carter ties with the REV-Yucaipa loser for second.

If Carter finishes tied with REV, then Carter wins the tiebreaker, because Carter swept the two games with REV in the opening week of league. If Carter ties with Yucaipa, the teams split head-to-head, so you would go to runs allowed. But each team won a one-run game, Yucaipa by an 8-7 score, Carter by a 2-1 score in 8 innings, So each team allowed 9 runs. The next tiebreaker for baseball or softball is a coin flip, which I’m guessing would be held Friday night.

Yucaipa’s Courtney Coleman returns; will it be enough vs. Cajon?

Yucaipa hopes to challenge Cajon in Citrus Belt League girls basketball and the Thunderbirds are off to a solid 8-2 start this season. They’ve done it without their best player, senior guard Courtney Coleman.
Coleman tore her anterior cruciate ligament in a travel ball game in June, and was cleared to rejoin the team on Monday. Today, Yucaipa faces Cajon in the Thunderbirds’ first league game.
“We’ll see how she does,” Yucaipa coach Jeremy Hoch said. “She’s not going to be in shape. Hopefully, she’s able to create her own shot, but that will be tough against the twins (Tyla and Tyra Turner).”
Coleman, a second-team all-Sun player and Yucaipa’s leading scorer last year, had hoped to return a few weeks ago, but didn’t get clearance until Monday.
“I wish we’d have a couple of more weeks (to get her ready for Cajon) but we’re happy to have her back,” Hoch said.
I am going to the game tonight, and although I don’t give Yucaipa much of a chance to win, I am curious to see if the Thunderbirds can keep it to be a closer game than it was last year, when Cajon blew out Yucaipa by at least 30 points each time. Yucaipa went on to finish third in the league.

Yucaipa’s Janell Walley, Chino Hills’ Alexis Cardoza win beach volleyball title

Displaying AA winners.jpeg
Janell Walley (left), and Alexis Cardoza celebrate after winning the title on Sunday.

Yucaipa High’s girls volleyball team is seeking a Citrus Belt League title this season. But senior Janell Walley is already coming off her own big victory.
Walley and Chino Hills junior Alexis Cardoza teamed up to win an A-rated adult level beach volleyball tournament in Huntington Beach on Sunday.
Walley and Cardoza, who are club teammates with Rancho Valley, went 2-1 in pool play, then won each of their bracket matches to bring home the title. They earned a AA rating, meaning Walley and Carodoza won’t be able to compete in any A-level tournaments anymore, only AA and AAA. AAA tournaments are pro-level.
Walley, who has committed to Boise State, said playing beach volleyball helps her with the high school team.
“I think it helps your reading game on the court, predicting where it goes,” she said.
Walley said it’s difficult because she doesn’t get to practice much on the beach this time of year, unlike other competitors, who live closer to the beach, and many of the opponents are in their 20s and have an experience advantage.
“But I feel like we younguns have more stamina,” she said.
It helped, she said, for a tournament that began at 9 a.m. and didn’t end until 5:30 p.m.
I just found out via email what the CIF-SS rules are about this. The fact that it is 2-on-2 beach volleyball is allowable during the season, per CIF-SS rules. Spokesman Thom Simmons said if it was 3-on-3 (half of a regular team) it would be a violation of team rules.

Yucaipa Cross Country Invitational cancelled again: What is its future?

Above, Claire Graves, now a junior at Citrus Valley talks about winning her race in the last Yucaipa Invitational, two years ago.

In speaking with Yucaipa cross country coach Jason Carney, I found out that for the second straight year, the Yucaipa Invitational, one of the better invitationals in San Bernardino County annually, will not be held.
Traditionally, it was held around the first Saturday in October. Last year it was cancelled because construction in the hills next to Yucaipa High where the course has been made it impossible to run an invitational.
This year, it’s the same issue. Last year, they had originally scheduled the invitational before telling teams they had to cancel. This year, they didn’t even schedule it. And Carney doesn’t plan on having it back.
Once a meet has been cancelled for two years, it’s hard to get those teams back. An initial concern was how would the program make up for the funds the Invitational brought? As it turned out, just fine, he said. They had a couple of more fundraisers, and were not lacking in money. The invitational weekend is a stressful one for Carney and he’d just as soon not have it back. At least, he won’t be spearheading the drive to bring it back. He didn’t rule out others trying to bring it back.
As was the case last year, Yucaipa will still host Citrus Belt League finals, but at the Regional Park.

Yucaipa’s Jared Davila finally makes his season debut

Yucaipa’s Jared Davila, one of the top returning pitchers in the area, finally made his season debut on Tuesday after a lengthy rehabilitation from an elbow injury.
Davila pitched a shutout inning of relief on Tuesday in a win vs. Citrus Valley, allowing one hit and striking out one.
“He’s finally getting in there,” Yucaipa coach Jeff Stout said. “He’s probably 85-90 percent. His velocity is in the low-mid 80s.”
A year ago, Davila went 7-1 with a 0.97 ERA in 12 appearances including 10 starts. Stout said that Davila will be limited to an inning or two out of the bullpen, partially because Yucaipa is deep with pitching.
