About a month after financially troubled Los Angeles Unified announced it would cut most summer school offerings to save about $34 million, the district has announced what *will* be available.

Like most secondary campuses in the district, the six high school campuses in the South Bay and Harbor Area -- Banning, Carson, Gardena, Narbonne, San Pedro and Westchester -- will all have some classes. The courses offered are only for "credit recovery" -- graduation requirements, core classes and A-G classes.

The programs will run from July 6-August 14.

LAUSD ANNOUNCES SUMMER OPTIONS FOR STUDENTS
Los Angeles - The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) announces limited
(high school) summer school opportunities and several alternative options available
to keep students academically engaged, and mentally and physically active, this
summer following the cancellation of summer school for elementary and middle
school students due to the current State budget deficit.

"With programs and support services being cut or eliminated, it is vital that our
students be able to take advantage of existing and available opportunities," said
Superintendent Ramon C. Cortines. "I'd like to thank the public and private sector,
as well as our many partners, which came forward and offered their support and
services to the boys and girls of the LAUSD.

"Through their support and efforts, our students and families will have access to a
wealth of learning enrichments and supervised activities throughout Los Angeles
and the District to keep them mentally and physically engaged throughout the
summer."

The LAUSD is offering summer school on a limited basis to eligible high school and
special education students. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles is also offering summer
school opportunities for students in the District for a fee. The District's Beyond the
Bell Branch is providing 162 free summer programs for elementary and middle
schools at selected school sites. In addition, a variety of summer programs and
activities--content and grade level games, study tools and enrichment
experiences--are available through the Los Angeles City Recreation and Parks
Department, public libraries, museums, and many more venues this summer.
