Detective works five murders in a night

Two-man teams working for Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Gil Carrillo caught five homicides throughout the county last night. The cases ranged from drive-by shootings in Lakewood and Temple City to a beating death in Hawthorne. Details about the Temple City shooting are slowly emerging. it was the town’s first murder since October. How many other San Gabriel Valley towns share that distinction?
According to investigators, the Hawthorne case was pretty brutal.

The victim was apparently beaten to death with a two by four.
Carrillo, who arrived at work around 7 a.m. Wednesday morning was so busy that he didn’t get home until 5 a.m. Thursday. He returned to his Commerce office at 9 a.m. Thursday.
You would think hours like that might tire a man out. Carrillo said he’s no exception. But he said working cases energizes him and he has a secret recipe for staying awake late into the night and early morning. Sunflower seeds.
“You have to concentrate when you eat ’em,” he said.
