Thrown out

There’s a meeting at the Monrovia Community Center taking place right now. Apparently City Council is in attendance.

Our photographer was thrown out. The bouncer said no pictures. Apparently a reporter has been able to escape detection — so far…

What…a meeting and the citizens weren’t told? No photographers? Keep us updated. This should be interesting.

The ministry of truth will report what happens with the official spin. I hope your reporter can get more, especially on the emotions.

  • What

Isn’t against the law to throw out news photographers? What are they trying to hide?

It’s good that there’s a meeting taking place but it would have been nice if the city published on its main page this scheduled meeting…

I would attend the meeting right now but am wary to leave my home because there’s lots of sirens and helicopters going off presently and I don’t know which area is unsafe at this time.

For others who wish to read the City’s recent post about the “wave of gang violence” please see the link:

Maybe the meeting isn’t a general public meeting. Maybe they do not want a photographer there in case it is part of this newly created Task Force and they don’t want pictures of the people involved circulating so that they do not become targets. I am just as concerned and upset about this as the next guy, but sometimes you need to take a deep breath and use your head.

  • Anonymous

Point well taken… even if this was a general public meeting, I wouldn’t be pleased to have my name or photo published because there’s no telling whether these gang thugs would target folks who are working to stop their violent spree… the peacemakers have families, too… who knows, maybe they even have kids in the high schools who could be targeted for their parents involvement with trying to stop this violence… so yeah, I think it’s wise to NOT publish the names or faces of the peacemakers. As a resident, all I care about is that the matter is being addressed and a solution will come about soon…. so you got me thinking, maybe the meeting was not announced for the protection of the people who are trying to achieve a peace plan.

update from the road… the bouncer was none other than dick singer. he apparently had a change of heart after the first post. the photog got in after all.

    Frank,
We’re all counting on you! and Freedom of the Press.

Does anyone know why the helicopters are up? i see one around Huntington and about 2 more south I saw another poster mention the same thing

  • Anonymous

Freedom of the Press should not be used to tell the bad guys what the good guys are planning to do!

  • Anonymous

Hi Anon, I’m also seeing helicopters and heard a bunch of sirens going off ever since 7PM… the sirens were crazy for about 45 minutes and now all that remains are the helicopters south of 5th near Huntington… I’m hoping that some radio scanner might be able to report what’s been dispatched that’s attracted so much police attention… Guess I’ll have to wait until the 11 O’clock news…. hm, the helicopters just quieted down…

  • Anonymous

No maybe they just didnt tell you guys because atm the most recent city meetings they have been selling false you guys false hopes about what they are doing… i dont know if yu guys know this or not but this feud is not new…. it is very much old… Its just that now the police are getting a bad rap for it because it has become deadly at a rapid pace…

  • Anonymous

false alarm… the helicopters are back… guess they had to refuel… another sleepless night I suppose…

10PM now… helicopters and sirens are back out once more… south area of Monrovia

I dont hear them anymore, I am watching the news but no new news. Everytime I hear people walk by my house I get up to see are they still walking or did they stop. I contstantly get up to look out my windows. I bet the Mayor and friends dont have this problem. Does anyone know anything?
Has there been any word on the other girl? It seems to me and I am not a gang expert, but the latino gang is quicker to retaliate but the AA gang is more brazen. In other words its scary either way

    in monrovia,
I know what you mean, I put things that will make noise by my doors just incase. I know it is a fire hazard but right now I think the chance of a fire is less than someone breaking in.

I just watched an interview of a local high school student who said “this is like a racial thing and I’m white so I’m not really worried…” followed by giggles. I am so disgusted by this obvious display of disregard for the pain of others. Innocent people have died here and this little ignorant teenager is thinking it is of no concern of hers because she is WHITE????? Sickening.

Okay….first off I was at the meeting and no one was kicked out. They were informed that they couldn’t take pictures of the community without there permission. I do agree that something should have been posted to inform more of the community about the meeting. I found out by the calling city hall. Another gathering will be held on this Saturday 2/2/08 from 11am-2pm @ Fishermans Park on the corner of California and Maple also none as Canyon Park. Come out and you will be able to hear what was addressed tonight, as well as ask questions. There’s another meeting being held on 2/5/08 @ 7:30pm @ City Hall on Ivy in Monrovia. Not sure of the exact address, sorry

    God’s Speed,

BTW, I received a phone call from the city informing me of the meeting. I would believe that everyone with a home phone in the area received the same phone call yesterday afternoon…or at least so I hope. So, to answer one of the questions this is not a private meeting, it is really meant for the community. I didnt go because I live on Peck Road where the shootings happened and I honestly dont want to put myself and my family in more danger than necessary. I am afraid to go outside while it is dark.

    Dick Singer must go!

Until recently, I really respected the man. The Monrovia City Web site is one of the best in the area. Great info. He seemed to do well, towing a line of balance in an obviously politcally tinged position.

But, his “Ministry of Truth” routine, as one local blog calls it, has gotten out of hand.

The errors and arrogance of the Rumor Control box on the City Web site are shocking. On Jan 3, the Blog referred to another blog as the one that “usually gets things wrong.” When does a City ever cast official comment on the conduct of a legal operating entity? NEVER!

When we on Primrose Avenue rose up to express our disgust at the City’s inaction on our speeding problem, he didn’t ensure that MPD put on a good show, he passed out platitudes and said it was “good for us to be in the process” – but said there would be no stop signs and made no indication of stepping up to solve the problem.

Now he removes a legitimate news organization from a public meeting? This is the face of the City? Our best foot forward?

And, never mind the hilarity of the front-page quote from the Sheriff’s Department that there is a full-on race war, while the City’s “official” position is that it is not a racial issue. Unreal. disgusting.

Singer & Ochoa quote Confucious (yes, really) while the cops are speaking hard, bloody truths.

The spin, lies and obfuscation must end. And that will only happen when Dick Singer is gone.

    No… then who’se is it?

Those guys are not all bangers.

So, we find out about official meetings from this blog, when they need to emmanate first from our leaders. The meeting last night was ill conceived–only a few invited by phone invitation? Hundreds of people are asking for clarification or what they can do to help. And frankly, they’re scared, so am I. The conflicting messages from the “officials” is unnerving and shows that they’re not on the same page yet. Every citizen in this community, esp. those with children in ANY school in Monrovia most definitely have a right to a meeting asap! The fear is very real: regardless of race and gang war BULLETS KNOW NO COLOR! It’s the stray bullet potentially headed for theinnocent victim that has everyone ultra concerned! I am so embarrassed for city website and it’s obfuscation of the truth which speaks volumes about our public relations.

  • frazgo

That is bullshit “no pictures without permission” they know it too. If it happens in a public forum it can be documented.

Whomever put out that piece of crap needs to be fired. I suspect it is Dick Singer. I suspect he is responsible for the city web as he is the “pio”.

I’m with Parry, can Dick Singer. Can those telling him what spin to put on things.

  • Anonymous

I didnt get a call, and I have kids at all 3 levels of the schools, I would have liked to go, I want to be part of the solution, but seems they are exclusive

  • Anonymous

I also did not receive a call and I have two children at Monrovia High school. I one son in college and he is not and never has been a gang member. Of course he has some friends with affliations being that he is an African American and this is a small town. I trust he is smart enough as an adult to know when it is safe to be around those friends. And just to clarify that myspace subheader was lyrics to a rap song, so it’s back to that debate again.

    Frank,
    Do you know where I can find a listing of “shootings”? I have thumbed through a few links here and couldn’t find what I was looking for. I am looking;
    1. to see how many reported/unreported shootings of any kind have happened in my neighborhood
    2. I remember back a month or 2 ago reading a drive by happened on my street, and for some reason I suspect this is connected (Or should I say people on my street are connected) hmm.. just wondering
    Thanks

  • http://monroviawakeupcall.blogspot.com/ don quixote

MidMonrovia…we have been digging for months trying to get the information you are asking for.

There is a distinct effort to cover up the crime in town. I have had people tell me first hand after events to not talk to the press.

A commenter here has a quote allegedly attributed to our mayor regarding a Murder Suicide last fall “this is one murder the press will never know about”

The group at Monrovia vs Mayberry RFD broke the news and the press had better tools to ferret out what happened.

We have at least two sources with connections in city hall who have been told that bad news is controlled if not eliminated so as to not discourage potential investment in redevelopment. Of course everyone will deny it, but the group researching for the “anonymous online blog” are digging and sharing when we can.

Don’t blame the press when they can’t get you information. When they contact the city for information they get the “nothing newsworthy happens here, move along”. The can only report what they are given and can’t dig too far legally.

Look to the “ministry of truth” for answers and ask them.

  • Monrovia Tax Payer

This whole situation is horrible. Reminds me of when I lived in inner city DC for five years in the 1990s. Just wait until the National Guard shows up with their generators and sets up on street corners, blasting lights to keep the thugs at bay (until 10pm when the noise ordinances kick in). Oh, wait…the NG are all in Iraq.

Seriously, this situation is exploding around us and I’m so annoyed at our City “Leaders” for not being pro-active, not telling us the truth, not having a plan in place and not having enough police to handle this situation. Are we going to get help from the Sheriff or any other agencies until we can get everything settled?

Also, parents…if you even *suspect* that your kid is associated with a gang, TALK TO YOUR KID. Tell them that dying for an affiliation is not worth it. If your kid has no gang ties, do whatever you can to protect your kid. Carpooling, curfews, monitoring their activities…sounds harsh, but right now, it’s the only responsible thing to do until our local government gets a handle on how to solve this mess.

I don’t generally look to government to solve my problems, btw, but I do pay my property taxes and I do expect the minimum from the city: Fire, Water and SAFETY.
