Sad story of life on mean streets far from Monrovia

This comes from Witness LA:

jamiel.jpgJamiel was a block or two away from home talking on his cell phone to Chrystale when the two other boys rolled up, got out of their little white car, and walked over. “Where you from?” they said. The familiar gang challenge. Jamiel wasn’t from anywhere. He was a church kid, a studier, a football star.

He didn’t answer. He must have just looked at them, unbelieving. The phone line was still open and Chrystale told her brother that she heard a sound like a gust of wind. Then the line went dead.

The wind Chrystale heard was the sound of bullets.

The victim in this case was black. The shooters described as Latino.

these idiots should not see the streets again. They took an innocent life. Sounds like a hate crime to me.

Little advice: Sometimes it is better to at least acknowledge your assailants by answering them instead of ignoring them. It could sometimes save your life.

Do you really think that a response would have made a difference? Somehow I don't think so..at least not anymore. They were searching for a target. Have you noticed how brave they are when it's muliples against a 'loner' especially someone who probably isn't carrying any heat...I really don't grasp the 'mind-set' of a person that can just step out and randomly shoot. They must be drugged out..tell me so? I can't even find a word befitting of their character other than scum (no curse words). No balls, no brains no courage...

I am surprised our local 'gang sympathizer' is not commenting. He sure rants about gang injunctions and the right of criminals. Here is another story of interest for our blogging gang injunction gabbler.
