Murder during moratorium

Official counts indicate three murders county-wide during the 40-hour “Murder Moratorium.”

The moratorium was planned as a way of honoring the death 40 years ago of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King. THe LA City Council rejected the idea initally, but did issue a proclamation against violence. No one’s checked weekend violence stats yet, but undoubtedly they are typical for an average weekend in Los Angeles County.

One of those killed over the weekend was a 23-year-old La Puente man, shot to death in the 400 block of Edgley Drive in Monterey Park.

Alfred Richard Chavez, 23, was shot about 1:20 a.m. Sunday, according to a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner. Sheriff’s Homicide is investigating the case.

  1. Alfred Chavez of Rosemead,CA. was my cousin. I’m sure many of you who are reading this know him. He was a well known guy -fun to be around. If you’d like to make any donations please contact me at rapsgv@yahoo.com Thank you very much.

  2. Wha……? the Bangers didn’t respect the moratorium?! They are usually so civic minded.

  3. So, now that the moratorium’s over, does that mean it’s OK to start killing people again?

  4. Sorry Rudy. Had I your comment posted before I wrote mine I would not have been so glib.

  5. My son was at the party in monterey Park on saturday/early Sunday morning. He got in at 10:30 after being questioned by police. His friend was wounded and has since had three surgeries since Sunday.
Contrary to the star news report, there was no fight!!!!!
The shooter was extreemly drunk, and wanted to do what he did.. He tried to start several altercations but no one took the bait.
He faced the open garage where people were dancing, pulled a gun from his waist and fired five shots. He didn’t care who he shot. Alfred Chavez died in the street in front of the house. My son called 911 right after the shooting. His back was to the shooter and he was only eight feet away.
Why did it take 20 to 30 minutes to get an ambulance to the house?
This kind of thing does not happen in the MPK. MY son knew everone at the party but the shooter! and he was just trying to start trouble.
    Alfred Chavez RIP.
