Heat wave = crime wave?

In Baldwin Park at least.

The gunfire continued Wednesday night when a car-to-car shooting was reported near the intersection of Nubia and Bleeker streets.

*Baldwin Park police officers sometimes forget to mention these crimes when we call, but that’s why we have a scanner.

Oh, and the City Council? Well, Anthony Bejarano told me at a recent lunch meeting that the shootings, killings and other violent crimes occurring in Baldwin Park are a function of the socio-economic status of its residents…

In other words, poor people are more likely to commit crimes.

That of course doesnt’ explain Phil Spector, OJ Simpson or the Kennedy and Skakel families …

  1. Yes the rich commit crimes too, but violent and property crimes are more the territory of the disadvantaged. Don’t believe me? Take a walk around fair oaks and washington around 3 am and then try the same walk in la canada and see where you feel safer.

The rich rob you with a fountain pen.

Phil yet to be convicted of anything.

  2. If I walked around La Canada at 3 a.m., I think the Neighborhood Pridesmen would kindly escort me out.

    I kid, I kid..that’s South Pas.

  3. B.S. The vast majority of poor people are not criminals. Gangsters and other like idiots and scum of society can’t blame it on their socio-economic lot in life. It can be blamed on dip shit parents, bad choices, laziness and a lack of any drive to just do the right thing. It’s easier to be a lazy criminal/gangster than hold down a job and support a family.

What a nation of excuse making cowards we are turning into. People having to apoligize for everything they say, no matter how innocent because some idiot decided it was offensive. Cops in L.A. under the gun to open up their disciplinary hearings from idiot Democrats but in the meantime just try getting into a parole hearing for the heck of it.

Bejarano is just another excuse maker. If he can’t stay in touch with reality than step aside and let some kick ass mayor take his spot.

  4. Lboy,
I think you mistook Councilman Womanizers’ point: its not that the vast majority of poor people are criminals, rather the vast amount of criminals are poor people. I’m hopeful you’re capable of making that distinction.

I’m not surprised you see people in authority as ass-kickers first, question askers later (if ever). You view the world in search of criminals who need to be taught a lesson. But cant you see the value of viewing the world through the lens of a Priest or Social Worker or Teacher, who thinks the questions, convesations and healing are part of the answer as well?

  5. If white color crime was prosecuted more often, the crime stats might reflect who is really doing the bad stuff to the greatest number of people.

  6. The time for asking questions is long gone “us”. Look at your lovely Baldwin Park that you like to post about. People shooting people all week long and your major concern is with how much of a smart ass you can be on a website.

I don’t need to play that game. The “pussification” of America is in full gear and you and me are on opposite teams. WCGB kind of has a point because there are plenty of “white collar” criminals that get of way too easy but it’s a little different being victimized by one of them than by some gangster who walks up, asks where your from and unloads his gun of choice into you. Which “victim” makes it home? End of that story.

I don’t need to see the world through the eyes of a priest, social worker or teacher but let’s get something straight. I am all for helping the truly needy, destitude and ill. I’ve in fact worked with the ill so I have a little knowledge of what I’m talking about and who they are.

I’m not for helping anybody who acts in the manner gangsters act until a little behavior modification is shown be it by time in jail, intervention from some group or a positive role model influence. There has to be a time of good behavior that’s actually proved and not simply believed because they say so, or some parent says so. Some of the stupidest people I’ve ever met, not to mention worthless, gangster parents who didn’t know what their kid was up to. In the meantime, another dead teenager and another carwash. What a damn shame.

By kick ass mayor I meant someone who doesn’t make feeble-minded excuses like Bejarano, but atacks a problem head on. You try to twist my words professor but the meaning doesn’t change just because you think so by playing your little word games. You are an excuse maker just like the mayor. Who are you trying to kid?

No healing comes without a change of heart and attitude along with a desire to do what’s right. That comes first, always. If you can’t understand that you’re never going to matter, you’ll just be a conduit to bad behavior due to your own personal weakness and your well documented race based thinking.

  7. Normally, I try to avoid commenting on these blogs as it rarely proves to be productive. However, since mr giarardot found it prudent to post a snippet of our conversation, without the rest of the context, I felt compelled.
Cities with a lower economic reality will always have a higher crime rate than those with a more affluent populace. Since our society doesn’t track white collar “crime” the same way as the crimes that are issue in this blog, I’m not referring to the enrons of the world.
Nor am I making excuses. While it is important to maintain law and order with what local boy refers to as “ass-kicking,” it is also important to realize that these are reactive measures. In other words, you will be punishing the criminal but not addressing the situations that created the criminal, thus you will always be one step behind.
My point was that in addition to the “law and order” tactics, it is equally important to attempt to improve the economic situation in the community as well. As I have said many times, legislative work does not work on a single track. Civic leaders should not think of terms of “or”, but rather in terms of “and.”
The other component is obviously education, but since the city council has no power over the school system, my colleagues and I are unfortunately forced to leave that part of the equation to the school district.

Also, as a point of clarification, I didn’t say shootings, killings and violent crime. I just said crime, which incorporates those other forms of crime. Furthermore, my comments were in regards to crime in general. Obviously there are always exceptions, like crimes of passion (see oj).

None of this, however, is to imply, as it seems to be implied in frank’s blog entry, that I or the council have just thrown our hands up. On the contrary, my point is merely that more police officers or “ass kicking” will, by itself, be enough to solve the crime issue. Such tactics are only one part of the solution.

  8. Edit: ass kicking will never, by itself, be enough to solve the crime issue.

  9. I’ll give credit to Mr. Bejarano for answering up on this blog. Nobody however gives “ass kicking” enough of a chance to see if it alone would help at least “lessen” the crime problem. We have a death penalty in this state with hundreds of people who should be getting strapped down on a daily basis and it sits dormant. Start sending them on their well deserved final journey a lot quicker and see what happens.

As a former Baldwin Park resident I know the gang problem has been around for decades. While idiot politicians and liberal cowards have thrown tons of money at intervention programs the facts show they don’t work to the extent we need them to work. Many programs have been robbed of funds by supposed gang members working them. Yeah, our leaders are real smart. Scott Ochoa refused to call the killings in Monrovia raced based when the facts to anyone with a double-digit I.Q showed otherwise. Why isn’t this mental case fired?

I know parole officers who aren’t allowed to violate parolees on minor violations and later these street terrorists go out and kill someone. Violate these repugnant bastards every single time, see how things chnage a bit. Make being in a gang a felony with a sentence with some bite to it and see how things change.

We won’t do that though will we? No, somebody like the idiot poster “us” or the soft on crime Miss Havisham would have a fit, maybe you too, because my God a bunch of the people that would be tossed in prison have brown skin. Like that should matter. What should come first Mr. Bejarano, the safety of your citizens or worry about what a bad guy looks like?

Now because the gangs have become more empowered by the lack of really concentrated hard core letter of the law action by our local PD’s they are worse than ever. Just look at L.A. Half the population of New York City and more than twice the gang members. That’s not taking into account the suburbs so what’s that say about the soft approach?

Having worked gang crime I know what I’m talking about. You take back a neighborhood by throwing all the bad guys in jail and letting their relatives and friends know “they are next” if they don’t toe the line. The good residents of your city, like all other towns deserve no less from their police departments and elected officials. The bad residents shouldn’t count, not ever.

  10. Local boy,

Your post addresses a multitude of societal and cultural issues. To answer your question, I’m not concerned with what a “bad guy” looks like.

But, you are still thinking and speaking in terms of “or” as opposed to “and.”. Moreover, the history of our country demonstrates that “ass kicking” doesn’t eradicate crime. It can help to keep the criminal element in check for short periods of time, but in the end the resources of government can never out last the crime phenomenon. That is why I made the point about economics. The theories and philosophies behind the sources of crime are far too lengthy to summerize in a blog post. But, by way of analogy, consider poverty a “disease” and crime as a symptom of poverty. When treating, you obviously want to alleviate the symptoms, and that is something that shold be done, but if you don’t treat the underlying problem as well, the symptoms will just reappear. Its not enough to try to make crime “not pay” by increasing penalties; we must also provide an alternative that does pay, like improved economic situations.

  11. Mr. Bejarano, your “or” and “and” dialogue was not lost on me. Neighborhoods and economic fortunes can be turned around, just look at Monrovia if you need an example. I have no problem with the work that was done to help improve that community.

However it didn’t just happen. As blocks were cleaned up and businesses were enticed to give the city a chance as crime rates went down and property values increased, the reason for the change was that plenty of assholes went to jail. The police and city did not play patty-cake with their parents or those who supported their activity. I know that for a fact.

The city used all their resources to help accomodate the good people who were being terrorized by the local assholes and things became better. Now it seems another generation of gangsters, more psychopathic and self centered has taken root. The racial tensions between Blacks and Hispanics, for more reasons than just skin color, is a big cause and you should know that. Just today in Santa Ana a young girl was shot while sitting in her home and her infant sister showered with glass as a gangster shot at another gangster that was passing her home.

That would not be unusual in Baldwin Park and that is truly sad. If you can show me a true down side to putting all these jackasses in jail by simply passing a law that makes gang membership illegal than do so. Saving one kids life who just happens to have the misfortune to live in an area where gang activity is the order of the day is more important to me than what befalls any gangster.

  12. B,
Although I’m sure Lboy was forced to sit through several community college courses during his 80 years, I’m not as certain he’s capable of digesting Sociology 101 in the few short paragraphs you provided. He’s done a terrible job with Critical Thinking and failed every test taken in the Humanities. He can still swing a billy stick, though and show you his badge (rusty and all)and complain to the moon that nobody takes his ridiculous proposals seriously…e.g., make ‘belonging to a gang’ (a nebulous concept)a felony.

L Boy is an old man, a right wing extremist and nobody takes his ranting seriously.

  13. As usual it’s just bs from the racist us who doesn’t debate or answer any questions. I’m 54 us and never needed the “billy club” to often. I still don’t. You on the other hand should just go to your La Raza meeting and every once in a while thank God you have officers in your town that aren’t afraid to do real men’s work while you sit around reading.

By the way, you’ve been handed your hat here by more people than me. I just do it best. I’d be smarter than you with half my brain missing.

  14. Hey “ushole”, I know the meaning of just about any three dollar word you throw out. Is that what you have to do to pretend you have a singular thought you can actually back up from a factual basis? You can’t, for some reason, just speak in plain English and get across whatever point you’re trying to make?

Your arrogance is not doing you any good. I know the above paragraph, like all my posts are impossible for a phoney like you to answer. Don’t try, you’ll sleep better at night dreaming of the time someone pays attention to you besides you.

  15. Lboy,

“ushole”? congrats, gramps, this is by far your most clever work to date. sadly, your grade is still a D.

You don’t present any arguments; you simply shout what you think needs to be done. and while this might have worked when you had a badge and gun, nobody here gives a gay-Monrovian-police-officers-ass about what YOU (a retired, political and ethnic minority in the SGV) think.

If you have an argument, please present it. You’ve hinted at one (e.g., Being a gang member should be a felony) but are afraid to spell out the details out of fear you it will be ridiculed as illegal, impractical and nonsensical.

Unlike you, I’m not interested in shouting down ideological opponents. In this case, I think its good for the readers of the SGV Tribune to know what elderly, patriotic, conservative, tough-minded, retired white men are thinking.

  16. This is like talking to the smartest kid in the special education class. Not that I have to answer anything your racist ass posts “ushole” but for shits and giggles I’ll entertain you.

A “group”, probably what you call “gang members” in your social circles, in my old white world would be considered a gang if they met certain criteria. Those criteria would be met if they were found to have a formal organizational structure, identifiable leadership, identifiable territory, recurrent interaction, and be actively engaged in serious or violent criminal behavior. Identifiable tattoos and monikers associated with gang activity are additional factors that can and should be considered.

The above could be used against prison gangs and some motorcycle “clubs”, as they call themselves. We don’t want to leave the nasty white boys out “ushole”. Unlike you I’m equal opprotunity, I hate all the bad guys.

Making that a felony based on continued membership in an organization such as that has what downside except too many people with your type of skin would go to jail? You phony light weights in academia would stretch it out of proportion to seem draconian when it fact it’s a common sense approach to the problem

Here’s where you and I differ. I mourn all victims of crime, no matter their color or language. You don’t even give a damn about the innocents and young of your own ethnic background racist. Now get back to Bejarano’s and bring him something cold to drink. It’s hot in the valley.

  17. You know Frank, I posted back yesterday to the Hispanic version of Tom Metzger. I don’t get why it takes so long to get put up.
