Weekend violence erupts in Monrovia

After several months of relative peace and quiet a neighborhood in Northeastern Monrovia was rocked by gunfire late Saturday. The victim was described as a member of the DuRoc Crips. No suspect description was available. I’ve updated our guide to shootings in Monrovia — map embedded below — It really seems like that paticular neighborhood has a penchant for violence. The shooting occurred very close to where Brandon Lee was killed in January.

  1. I can say “I told you so”, I predicted this was going to happen just last week. The Monrovia police need to stop the MVN gang members as the are leaving the local bars and do weapons searches, I’m sure they would pick up many guns, also search the girl-friends purse.

These low lifes are truly cockroaches, who will come out when no one is watching. The Duarte Sheriff has been more aggresive in doing random vehicle stops and being more pro-active and not just re-active.

  2. Great map and I have to say I am always uncomfortable when I see it. It bothers me that it keeps festering and expanding.

The one addition I would put up is that the shootings started much earlier than the city will publically admit.

Don’t forget the bangers from 4th Dimension murdering George Rostran in April 04. There were seveal other “shots fired” calls in the SE corner of town that spring and summer.

Even a fight late summer involving 4th Dimension bangers chasing him down and knifing him in the parking lot across from the police station. He ran into the station for help bleeding pretty bad.

Also don’t forget the Halloween brawl at the 4th Dimension that had 100+ people spill into the streets and it took all MPD could muster with help of neighboring cities aid to quell the problem. Monrovia officials didn’t tell me that one, an Arcadia PD officer did.

I wonder if all those problems and the general magnet for local gang bangers at the 4th Dimension is part of the problem? I’ve had enough officers neighboring cities tell me that they can’t believe that place stays open with its clientelle and problems.

By far they are the worst. I get bits about a bar on Huntington and Myrtle next to the freeway that have problems but it doesn’t appear they have any thing nearly as major as the 4th Dimension.

A big sales tax generator seems to be forgiven a multitude of sins.

  3. The gang members are regulars at most of the Monrovia bars, the Fourth Dimension has the worst problems, probably just because of the size of the place and you also have gang members from different area showing up there. But there have been gang fights at the Elephant bar and Gem City Bar. If the Monrovia police had any sense they would should up in large numbers at these bars on a regular basis. But the Monrovia Police is like the Mayberry police force with Barney at the helm.
