The El Monte murder room

A woman and her companion who live in an El Monte motel room at the Gibson Inn where a murder was committed recently call the room the “Murder Room.”

This is just one of the things reporters Brian Day and Rebecca Kimitch learned after several tours of El Monte motels along Valley Boulevard. Here’s how their story, scheduled to see print on Sunday, will begin:

With one-third of El Monte’s murders this year at or near several motels, some El Monte elected officials are becoming increasingly concerned about crime near the businesses. Meanwhile, police officials dispute assertions that crime in motels is significantly worse than elsewhere, but do say the motels can be problematic.

  1. The city of El Monte has a very high rate of murders. I don’t care or believe Ernie Gutierrrz says that, “El Monte is the safest city in the San Gabriel Vally.” That is a bold face lie. We bought a home in El Monte 8 years ago and can’t wait to move away from this horrible city. Forget the El Monte Cops thay do what ever they want to do. It is a “Good Ole Boys-Cops and Robbers kind of Police Force.” They can have it all.

  2. I have lived in El Monte the majority of my 50 years of life and I can tell you that the city has changed, for the better. There was a time when residents could not walk the streets safely and now you can. The gang problem is mostly from other gangs outside the city coming in and causing trouble. We do not have a high rate of murders for a city of our size, quite the opposite if the other resident commenting bothered to check. Obviously, this person has a problem with our police department for whatever reason, and that is unfortunate and makes me wonder why. For the most part, they are a very professional group of men and women who put thier lives on the line for the citizens they protect. I wonder if the resident would do the same? The grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence and I do hope that they move soon, we don’t need this kind of negativity in our city. I am definately not a fan of our current mayor or his actions and hopefully that will be changed soon. But I remember the old days, prior to 8 years ago when I was afraid to walk the streets. That is no longer the case. El Monte is constanly striving to move forward and upward.
