No arrests expected in Covina stabbing
WEST COVINA -- Officials said they had no plans Wednesday to seek charges against a man who fatally stabbed his step-father in a fight while reportedly trying to defend his mother, a cancer patient.
Mark Vansimaeys, 30, of West Covina was believed to be acting in defense of either his mother or himself when he fatally stabbed his step-father, 48-year-old Dean Franklin Ybarra, West Covina police Lt. Ron Mitchell said.
"It was a horrible altercation," Mitchell said. Though the investigation remains ongoing, "At this point, we don't plan to arrest (Vansimaeys)," Mitchell said.
Another man, a brother to Vansimaeys and step-son to Ybarra, was present at the home Monday, Mitchell said. What role he may have played in the incident remained under investigation.
The dead man, who was listed with coroner's officials Wednesday as Dean Franklin, apparently died from "multiple stab wounds," Ed Winter, Los Angeles County Department of Coroner's Assistant Chief of Operations, said. An autopsy had not yet been performed.
The stabbing was reported shortly before 7 p.m. Monday when someone called police to report domestic violence at a home in the 700 block of East Merced shared by a husband, wife and step-son, West Covina police Cpl. Rudy Lopez said.
Both Vansimaeys and Ybarra were found injured inside the home, he said.

Domestic violence is tragic and especially when Dean's intention was to visit his wife suffering from cancer. If this was truly an act of self defense or protection may Dean's family find peace!

I believe that although Dean's family was not present at the time of this altercation they can provide another viewpoint of the Dean and Irene's family dynamics.
There is just something wrong with this story! mother and 2 grown sons in the house with stepfather.You mean the 2 sons who are grown men couldn't get the stepfather to leave or kick him out the f--king door,if they felt that their mother was being bothered by him why not hold him down on the floor while mother could have called the police!Instead it sounds like they were able to hold him down and kill him with a knife. (COULDN'T HOLD HIM DOWN TO CALL THE POLICE!! BUT WERE ABLE TO HOLD HIM DOWN TO KILL HIM WITH A KNIFE) just doesn't sound right.Doesn't say anything about mother being treated for any injuries? but the KILLER was treated and Dean Ybarra died from multiple stab wounds.Wow what luck for the killer.and the victim the(stepfather) probably didn't even get a chance to defend himself.(2 brothers with a knife and the stepfather who's going to out alive? the two brothers with the knife. Chicken sh-t cowards. I dont believe in Domestic Violence but this one just doesn't sound right, maybe they just didn't like the stepfather. which ever way you look at it no one deserved to be MURDERED.
for as long a had know dino, dino was never a violent man he was more afraid of irene and mark and the damage that they could cause him this wonderful human beings life was tooken buy a jobless worthless pot head freeloader dino always said shes gonna be the death of me he loved his wife he put up with all her threats and bull if e did not love and care for her he would of left a long time ago if you ask me i dont think he was murdred in self deffense i think mark did it cause he was high and upset with dino after he saw wha he had done him and irene planned it out that way dino my friend r.i.p i hope that the justice sytem can bring peace to your family
Mark and his bro thought they could get away with murdering one of my closest and dearest friends. Well they've got another thing coming ! I understand they were taken into custody on Fri. 11-20-09 . All I can say is , may GOD have mercy on your souls boys , cause you'll get no sympathy from anyone who knew & loved Dean Franklin Ybarra ! R.I.P. Dingo We miss you !
Well, judgement day is approaching. The preliminary hearing for Mark , is now scheduled for 1-26-10. I pray to GOD, that old saying , is true . (YOU CAN'T ESCAPE THE LONG ARM OF THE LAW ! )
